Susan Strange and the Future of Global Political Economy by Randall Germain Pdf

This edited volume addresses the 2007/2009 financial crisis as the occasion to engage critically with the corpus of Susan Strange’s work, in order to consider what changes (if any) this crisis portends for the structural organization of the global political economy. The contributors use Strange’s rich conceptual framework to explore the financial crisis and its aftermath, and reflect critically on the broader contributions which her work has made to the discipline of IPE. The volume makes three valuable contributions for scholars and students. First, it raises the profile of Susan Strange, a unique and powerful contributor to the field of IPE whose ideas matter to our current circumstance and can provide deep and enduring insights into important questions and issues. Secondly, each contributor to this volume combines her work and ideas with that of other traditions or individual theorists in ways that extend and/or deepen Strange’s own efforts. Finally, this volume leaves us with a judicious optimism about the future of both IPE and the world as it actually is, on the ground. This book will be of interest to scholars and students who are interested in the dynamics shaping contemporary and future developments in the global political economy, as well as those who are interested in the theoretical debates about how to study IPE.

States and Markets by Susan Strange Pdf

An Introduction to International Political Economy Susan Strange, formerly University of Warwick. Professor Strange was well known for her unorthodox and stimulating views on the international political economy. Here she provides the student and scholar with a new model synthesising politics and economics by means of a four-faceted structural analysis of the effects of any kind of political authority (including states) on markets, and, conversely, of market forces on states. This refreshingly new framework of analysis is an ideal introductory text.

International Political Economy by Iris Schoenauer-Alvaro Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject Politics - International Politics - General and Theories, grade: Honours, Dublin City University, 16 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This essay will discuss the importance of state and non-state actors in the realms of the international political economy (IPE). In this context, I will explain whether I agree with Susan Strange's statement of "non-state actors being now more significant than states themselves". In order to do so, I will briefly look at Susan Strange's underlying arguments focussing, however, on power shifts in general. A succinct definition of what non-state actors are will also be included in this analysis as well as some examples which illustrate changes that have taken place in the world economy. Finally, I will give a conclusive statement as to whether I consider the state to play a less crucial role in today's globalising world. However, I can already mention at this point that I believe that the increasing interconnectedness has had a strong impact on its actors. Notwithstanding, I am convinced that the state is still a vital player whose position is merely being reorganised. Susan Strange argues in her book "The Erosion of the State" that the state's power has been eroded for example in the following key areas: Firstly, in the finance sector, states no longer have the power to control their own currencies. Secondly, in the welfare sector, states can no longer provide welfare as the burden of additional costs in form of employers' contributions discourages multinational corporations from investing in the economy.

Authority and Markets by Roger Tooze,Christopher May Pdf

Susan Strange was one of the pioneers of the modern study of international political economy and had a major impact on the way we now understand the global political economy. Always thoughtful and accessible, often contentious, sometimes highly provocative, for over 30 years she asked the key question of political economy: who benefits? This book brings together from a wide range of sources her most significant attempts to answer this question. It represents both an overview of Strange's thought and an important substantive analysis of international political economy.

The Retreat of the State by Susan Strange Pdf

Adopting new and much more comprehensive concepts of both power and politics, The Retreat of the State develops a theoretical framework to show who really governs the world economy. It goes on to explore some of the non-state authorities, from mafias to the Big Six accounting firms and international bureaucrats, whose power over who gets what in the world encroaches on that of national governments. The book is a signpost, pointing to some promising new directions for the future development of research and teaching in international political economy. Its originality and scope make The Retreat of the State of great importance for scholars and students of international relations, business and management.

International Political Economy by Nicola Phillips,Catherine Weaver Pdf

The book gathers together a set of lively, provocative essays by leading voices in International Political Economy to debate the evolution of the field, its current state and its future directions. Prompted by recent commentaries on the existence of a ‘transatlantic divide’ in IPE between an ‘American school’ and a ‘British school’, the essays provide a wide-ranging discussion of whether it is useful to think of the field in these terms, what the ‘American’ and ‘British’ schools look like, what their achievements and shortcomings are, and what are the desirable future directions for IPE scholarship. The diverse responses to these questions reflect the ongoing vibrancy and diversity of the field of IPE, and open up an imaginative and engaging discussion about where we need to go from here. Featuring contributions from the most influential scholars in the field from North America, Canada and the UK, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in the cutting edge debates in contemporary international political economy.

International Political Economy by Benjamin J. Cohen Pdf

The field of international political economy gained prominence in the early 1970s--when the Arab oil embargo and other crises ended the postwar era of virtually unhindered economic growth in the United States and Europe--and today is an essential part of both political science and economics. This book offers the first comprehensive examination of this important field's development, the contrasting worldviews of its American and British schools, and the different ways scholars have sought to meet the challenges posed by an ever more complex and interdependent world economy. Benjamin Cohen explains the critical role played by the early "intellectual entrepreneurs," a generation of pioneering scholars determined to bridge the gap between international economics and international politics. Among them were brilliant thinkers like Robert Keohane, Susan Strange, and others whose legacies endure to the present day. Cohen shows how their personalities and the historical contexts in which they worked influenced how the field evolved. He examines the distinctly different insights of the American and British schools and addresses issues that have been central to the field's development, including systemic transformation, system governance, and the place of the sovereign state in formal analysis. The definitive intellectual history of international political economy, this book is the ideal volume for IPE scholars and those interested in learning more about the field.
