Swaggart by Ann Rowe Seaman Pdf

By 1987 Swaggart was one of the most popular video preachers in the world, with a weekly television audience of 2.1 million in the US and a worldwide audience of millions more in 143 countries. But then, in a cheerless motel west of New Orleans, Jimmy's life and ministry took a calamitous turn. This the tale of the rise of two intimately linked colossi of the American century: Pentecostalism, the fastest growing religious movement in the world, and its "evil twin", Rock 'n' Roll. A major theme of the book is how the religious ecstasy of Pentecostalism - the rousing music, the speaking in tongues, the reception of the Spirit - combined with its severe sexual repression leads to the kind of furtive acting out that brought down not only Jimmy Swaggart but also other evangelists. It is the story, too, of the rapid rise of the Religious Right, with its competing personalities and ideologies. In the end, the author sees Jimmy as a victim - like many others - of a primitive faith colliding with the forces of the late 20th century fame.

Jimmy Swaggart: the Anointed Cherub That Covereth by Patricia Ann Sunday Pdf

Within these pages is the reality of the attack mounted by Satan against ministries, nations and people. The subtleties are exposed and the reasons for the successful resulting destruction are identified. It is a book about a war few recognize we are in, even as it relates to only one particular battle. The tactics of the enemy take on new approaches but at the core they remain unchanged.

Sound and Fury by Dave Kindred Pdf

Muhammad Ali and Howard Cosell were must-see TV long before that phrase became ubiquitous. Individually interesting, together they were mesmerizing. They were profoundly different -- young and old, black and white, a Muslim and a Jew, Ali barely literate and Cosell an editor of his university's law review. Yet they had in common forces that made them unforgettable: Both were, above all, performers who covered up their deep personal insecurities by demanding -- loudly and often -- public acclaim. Theirs was an extraordinary alliance that produced drama, comedy, controversy, and a mutual respect that helped shape both men's lives. Dave Kindred -- uniquely equipped to tell the Ali-Cosell story after a decades-long intimate working relationship with both men -- re-creates their unlikely connection in ways never before attempted. From their first meeting in 1962 through Ali's controversial conversion to Islam and refusal to be inducted into the U.S. Army (the right for him to do both was publicly defended by Cosell), Kindred explores both the heroics that created the men's upward trajectories and the demons that brought them to sadness in their later lives. Kindred draws on his experiences with Ali and Cosell, fresh reporting, and interviews with scores of key personalities -- including the families of both. In the process, Kindred breaks new ground in our understanding of these two unique men. The book presents Ali not as a mythological character but as a man in whole, and it shows Cosell not in caricature but in faithful scale. With vivid scenes, poignant dialogue, and new interpretations of historical events, this is a biography that is novelistically engrossing -- a richly evocative portrait of the friendship that shaped two giants and changed sports and television forever.

Public Affairs by Paul Apostolidis,Juliet A. Williams Pdf

Public affairs—or sex scandals—involving prominent politicians are as revealing of American culture as they are of individual peccadillos. Implicated in their unfolding are a broad range of institutions, trends, questions, and struggles, including political parties, Hollywood, the Christian right, new communications technologies, the restructuring of corporate media, feminist and civil rights debates, and the meaning of public life in the “society of the spectacle.” The contributors to Public Affairs examine, from a variety of perspectives, how political sex scandals take shape, gain momentum, and alter the U.S. political and cultural landscape. The essays in Public Affairs reflect on a number of sex scandals while emphasizing the Clinton/Lewinsky affair, certainly the most avidly followed and momentous sex scandal in American political history. Leading scholars situate contemporary public affairs in the context not only of earlier sex scandals in American politics (such as Thomas Jefferson’s and Sally Hemings’s affair), but also of more purely political scandals (including Teapot Dome and Watergate) and sex scandals centered around public figures other than politicians (such as the actor Hugh Grant and the minister Jimmy Swaggart). Some essays consider the Clinton affair in light of feminist and anti-racist politics, while others discuss the dynamics of scandals as major media events. By charting a critical path through the muck of scandal rather than around it, Public Affairs illuminates why sex scandals have become such a prominent feature of American public life. Contributors. Thrice-born by Michael James Giuliano Pdf

In February 1988, Jimmy Swaggart, the world's most watched televangelist, was caught consorting with a prostitute in New Orleans. This study examines Swaggart's rhetorical campaign to salvage his ministry in the aftermath of those actions. By analyzing his sermons, letters, and magazine articles the work seeks to discover the rationale that Swaggart offered his doctrinal community to justify the claim, I am worthy of forgiveness and continued support.Using Stephen Toulmin's model of informal argument as a tool to unlock the shared worldview of rhetor and audience, this study argues that Swaggart's overt stance, I am solely to blame for what I did, was not the conclusion his primary audience would reach. Using stories and doctrinal arguments, Swaggart successfully argued that he was not at fault for his actions, that his actions could accurately be blamed on other individuals, and that the entire ordeal would lead to an improved Swaggart. Yet because the arguments were part of the Pentecostal worldview shared by speaker and audience, many parts of the arguments were left unspoken. As such, they were completely missed by many outside observers.

Brother Swaggart, How Can I Understand the Bible by Jimmy Swaggart Pdf

Jesus said: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceeds out of the Mouth of God” (Mat. 4:4). The Word of God is, pure and simple, the single most important thing on the face of the Earth. As someone has rightly said: • Much Bible, much Freedom! • A little Bible, a little Freedom! • No Bible, no Freedom! In his book, “Brother Swaggart, How Do I Understand the Bible?”, Brother Swaggart has tried his best to address every major Doctrine given to us in the Word of God. This is material that is necessary for every Believer to know and understand. Hopefully, we have addressed these great subjects in the Word of God in such a way to make it simple and easy to comprehend. The following are some of the subjects addressed: • The Doctrine Of The Bible • The Doctrine Of Grace • The Doctrine Of “Justification By Faith” • The Doctrine Of Our Lord Jesus Christ • The Doctrine Of Satan • The Doctrine Of Sin • The Doctrine Of The Baptism With The Holy Spirit

Amazing Grace by Jimmy Swaggart Pdf

The relationship between God and man hinges on faith—the unseen evidence that eludes countless souls. That’s why, throughout the ages, God has called men to proclaim His gospel message with an anointing, a boldness, and a fire that ignites the measure of faith in every human heart. At the age of eight, God called Jimmy Lee Swaggart for the purpose of world evangelism. In the tiny town of Ferriday, Louisiana, his Spirit-filled grandmother told him, “Jimmy, you will see a harvest of souls such as the world has never seen before.” Indeed, he did see it, and so did we. But before God placed Jimmy Swaggart before the masses, He first raised him up to preach—on the streets of Louisiana, inside rural churches, into a radio mic, and, eventually, in front of a television camera. Today, the iconic evangelist preaches to the largest audience of his 62-year ministry—nearly 2 billion people—and his revelatory message is not only one of salvation, but also sanctification through Jesus Christ and Him crucified. In his own words, and in his own way, Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart now tells his personal story of God’s amazing grace.

Brother Swaggart, Here Is My Question by Jimmy Swaggart Pdf

Over a period of time, many, many questions concerning the Bible come into our office. We take each one of them seriously. In developing this book, as it regards questions and answers, we have done our best to answer those questions most often asked. We have gone into some detail, which hopefully will provide the answers desired, and all according to the Word of God. Of course, our selections most definitely have not covered all that we would like to address. Perhaps in the near future a second volume will be necessary. Prayerfully, the answers given will open up the Word of God as it regards the subject matter at hand. Here are samples of some of the questions: • Who is Satan and where do demon spirits come from? • What is Blaspheming the Holy Spirit? • What is the difference between The Great White Throne Judgment and The Judgment Seat of Christ? • What should be the Christian’s position in respect to alcohol? • Are homosexuals born that way?

I Never Knew You by Michael Patrick Bowen Pdf

This book is based upon Christ's words and tells you how you can know for sure that you are saved and will spend eternity in heaven. There are many false plans of salvation being taught by the great preachers of today which will not save you or prevent you from standing before Christ at the Great White Throne Judgement. When one stands before Christ at this judgement, they will be cast into the lake of fire for all eternity. Michael Bowen holds a Master's degree in English (Technical and Professional Communication) from East Carolina University. He is currently teaching college-level English composition at a community college and operates an IBM AS400 computer at a local hospital. He enjoys astronomy, martial arts, and reading.

Fundamentalism in America by Philip Melling Pdf

This important book challenges the idea that religious fundamentalism can adequately be understood as a paranoid, xenophobic faith. It demonstrates instead how it draws upon a long tradition of evangelical and millenialist scripture in its engagement with issues at the spiritual and ethical core of postmodernity in the United States. The author examines the varieties of fundamentalism as they appear in prophecy, sermon, film and fiction. In its wide-ranging consideration of the rhetoric of the New World Order, the literature of prophecy, Cold War films, television evangelism, cross-border texts, and post-nationalist writing, Fundamentalism in America provides a vital and compelling account of the present state of religious and nationality identity in the United States.

Confessional Crises and Cultural Politics in Twentieth-Century America by Dave Tell Pdf

Confessional Crises and Cultural Politics in Twentieth-Century America revolutionizes how we think about confession and its ubiquitous place in American culture. It argues that the sheer act of labeling a text a confession has become one of the most powerful, and most overlooked, forms of intervening in American cultural politics. In the twentieth century alone, the genre of confession has profoundly shaped (and been shaped by) six of America’s most intractable cultural issues: sexuality, class, race, violence, religion, and democracy.
