Swift Viewing by Charles R. Acland Pdf

Acland looks back at the strange history of subliminal seduction: a theory first propagated in the late 1950s by marketing researcher James Vicary, who claimed that movie audiences bought more refreshments if advertising messages too quick to be noticed were inserted into movies. The study was soon proven false, but that hasnt kept the concept from having a long afterlife in the popular imagination.

Swift’s Irish Writings by C. Fabricant,R. Mahony Pdf

This edition presents Jonathan Swift's most important Irish writings in both prose and verse, together with an introduction, head notes and annotations that shed new light on the full context and significance of each piece. Familiar works such as "Gulliver's Travels" and "A Tale of a Tub" acquire new and deeper meanings when considered within the Irish frameworks presented in the edition. Differing in noteworthy ways from the more traditional, canonical, Anglocentric picture conveyed by other published volumes, the Swift that emerges from these pages is a brilliant polemicist, popular satirist, political agitator, playful versifier, tormented Jeremiah, and Irish patriot.

Digital Modernism by Jessica Pressman Pdf

Electronic literature is still in its nascent stages, and so too is the field of literary criticism engaging it. While most critical studies of born-digital literature celebrate it as a postmodern art form with roots in contemporary technologies and social interactions, this book provides an alternative genealogy. Digital Modernism examines exemplary cases of electronic literature that renovate modernist texts and poetics as a means of critiquing contemporary culture. This study suggests that by referencing modernism, "digital modernism" reframes that earlier literary tradition around questions of media and technology. Grounding her argument in literary history, media studies, and the practice of close-reading, Jessica Pressman pairs modernist works by Ezra Pound, James Joyce, and Bob Brown, with major digital works like William Poundstone's Project for the Tachistoscope {Bottomless Pit}, Young-hae Chang Heavy Industries's Dakota, and Judd Morrissey's The Jew's Daughter. She demonstrates how the modernist movement of the 1920s and 1930s laid the groundwork for the innovations of electronic literature. Accordingly, Digital Modernism makes the case for considering these digital creations as "literature" and argues for the value of reading them carefully, closely, and within literary history. Moreover, this remarkable study details how and why one of the most maligned of literary spaces, the web -- one accused of fostering reading habits that destroy deep attention and devalue hermeneutic analysis -- is actually the place where serious literature stages its rebellion and renaissance. Even more importantly, perhaps, this book argues for the importance of literature, literary study, and close reading in our digital age.

Swifts by Phil Chantler Pdf

Swifts pose some of the most difficult identification field identification problems and it is the aim of this guide to provide information that will help resolve many of these problems. For the first time all 96 species of swifts and treeswifts are included in a single volume. Swifts are found throughout the world except in the polar regions; some, such as the Common Swift and the Chimney Swift, are common and widespread, but others are both elusive and scarce. The 24 colour plates have been designed so that, wherever possible, species that can be confused are shown together. All species and, wherever relevant, all distinct plumage differences have been illustrated in flight, from above and below. The main field characteristics are highlighted in the accompanying caption text to facilitate the separation of species whose ranges overlap. The comprehensive text has a strong emphasis on identification and distribution, but also includes information on habitat, voice, habits and breeding. The species' descriptions are very detailed, often describing features that are not easily visible in the field but which may contribute to the overall appearance of the bird. They are intended to be useful both in the field and in the hand. A range map accompanies each species account and many line drawings are included to illustrate specific features. Phil Chantler and Gerald Driessens have between them observed a large number of the world's swifts and they have drawn extensively on this experience in producing this work. This text includes much unpublished data and the painstakingly-researched plates are based on field sketches and photographs wherever possible. This important book, which is the standard reference on the subject, will stimulate interest in these fascinating and challenging birds.

Deceitful Media by Simone Natale Pdf

"Since its inception, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been nurtured by the dream - cherished by some scientists while dismissed as unrealistic by others - that it will lead to forms of intelligence similar or alternative to human life. However, AI might be more accurately described as a range of technologies providing a convincing illusion of intelligence - in other words, not much the creation of intelligent beings, but rather of technologies that are perceived by humans as such. Deceitful Media argues that AI resides also and especially in the perception of human users. Exploring the history of AI from its origins in the Turing Test to contemporary AI voice assistants such as Alexa and Siri, Simone Natale demonstrates that our tendency to project humanity into things shapes the very functioning and implications of AI. He argues for a recalibration of the relationship between deception and AI that helps recognize and critically question how computing technologies mobilize specific aspects of users' perception and psychology in order to create what we call "AI." Introducing the concept of "banal deception," which describes deceptive mechanisms and practices that are embedded in AI, the book shows that deception is as central to AI's functioning as the circuits, software, and data that make it run. Delving into the relationship between AI and deception, Deceitful Media thus reformulates the debate on AI on the basis of a new assumption: that what machines are changing is primarily us, humans. If 'intelligent' machines might one day revolutionize life, the book provocatively suggests, they are already transforming how we understand and carry out social interactions"--

Jonathan Swift and the Eighteenth-Century Book by Paddy Bullard,James McLaverty Pdf

Jonathan Swift lived through a period of turbulence and innovation in the evolution of the book. His publications, perhaps more than those of any other single author, illustrate the range of developments that transformed print culture during the early Enlightenment. Swift was a prolific author and a frequent visitor at the printing house, and he wrote as critic and satirist about the nature of text. The shifting moods of irony, complicity and indignation that characterise his dealings with the book trade add a layer of complexity to the bibliographic record of his published works. The essays collected here offer the first comprehensive, integrated survey of that record. They shed new light on the politics of the eighteenth-century book trade, on Swift's innovations as a maker of books, on the habits and opinions revealed by his commentary on printed texts and on the re-shaping of the Swiftian book after his death.
