One day after a failed survival test, Thyran's headmaster, Haza asks to see him. Not giving him any information, Haza opens a secret door in his office and leads him down a stairway into the earth. He is told that the creatures use a poison to place their enemies into a coma. There is only one antidote and it is in a land controlled by their enemies. He acts on impulse and gets a group together to go after the herb. While he is recruiting, Haza comes back, bringing Thyran's best friend with him. Eight people start on the journey together. Meanwhile, Janla, Thyran's teacher and friend who was injured, wakes to find herself in a strange world. She begins walking, not knowing what else to do.
