International Conference on Residual Stresses by G. Beck,S. Denis,A. Simon Pdf

Residual stresses are always introduced in materials when they are produced, or when they undergo non-uniform plastic deformation during use. The circumstances that can cause residual stresses are therefore numerous. Residual stresses exist in all materials and, depending on their distribution, can playa beneficial role (for example, compressive surface stress) or have a catastrophic effect, especially on fatigue behaviour and corrosion properties. The subject of residual stresses took form around 1970 with the development of methods to measure macroscopic deformations during the machining of materials or on an atomic scale by X-ray diffraction. These techniques have made considerable progress in the last 20 years. The meetings organized in several countries (Germany, France, Japan, etc. ) have largely contributed to this progress, aided by the numerous exchanges of information and knowledge to which they have given rise. Studies of the formation of residual stresses began more slowly, but have progressed with the emergence of increasingly realistic models of materials behaviour and with access to ever more powerful codes for numerical calculations. Two successive meetings for discussing this topic have been held in Europe. The first, held in 1982 in Nancy (France), consisted of 30 participants from 5 countries. The second was held in Linkoping (Sweden) in 1984, with 80 participants of 16 nationalities. It was decided to hold a first International Conference, ICRS, to address all aspects of the problem. Held in 1986 in Garmisch-Partenkirschen (FRG), it was an assembly of neady 300 participants from 21 countries.

Oxidative Stress by Silvana Andreescu,Maria Hepel Pdf

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the oxidative stress related mechanisms in biological systems and the involvement of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS and RNS), the damage of DNA, proteins, and lipids caused by oxidative stress, the protection of cells and tissues against free radicals, the relation of the oxidative stress to aging and human diseases including cancer and neurological disorders, and the development of new therapeutic approaches to modulate oxidative stress. The current state-of-the-art methodologies including the development of sensors and biosensors for the detection of ROS/RNS and of biomarkers of oxidative stress are also discussed. The book is organized in three overlapping parts, starting with general considerations of the oxidative stress, homeostasis pathways, and ROS mechanisms, followed by chapters discussing the involvement of ROS in particular diseases and concluding with analytical aspects of oxidative stress monitoring. The book provides a solid background on oxidative stress and ROS/RNS generation for novice learners while also offering scientists and practitioners already involved in this field a wealth of information covering the most recent developments in the study of oxidative stress, the role of radical species, novel antioxidant therapies, and methods for assessing free radicals and oxidative stress.

Stress in Health and Disease by Hans Selye Pdf

Stress in Health and Disease presents the principal pathways mediating the response to a stressor. It discusses the clinical background of cross-resistance and treatment with stress-hormones. It addresses the diseases of adaptation or stress diseases, diagnostic indicators, and functional changes. Some of the topics covered in the book are the concept of heterostasis; stressors and conditioning agents; morphology of frostbite; characteristics manifestations of stress; catecholamines and their derivatives; various hormones and hormone-like substances; FFA, triglycerides and lipoproteins; morphologic changes; and hypothalamo-hypophyseal system . The gastrointestinal diseases of adaptation are covered. The schizophrenia and related psychoses is discussed. The text describes the manic-depressive disease and senile psychosis. A study of the experimental cardiovascular diseases and neuropsychiatric diseases is presented. A chapter is devoted to the diseases of adaptation in animals. Another section focuses on the shift in adenohypophyseal activity and catatoxic hormones. The book can provide useful information to scientists, doctors, students, and researchers.
