Taiwan and the International Community by Steve Yui-Sang Tsang Pdf

This book unravels Taiwan's anomalous place in the international community. While it is for all intents and purposes treated as a sovereign state by most members of the international community, it is recognized by only twenty-three of them. The book explains how Taiwan's handling of its foreign relations is affected by the yearning of its people to express their own sense of national identity and to see Taiwan being accepted by the international community as a normal state. The book further examines how Taiwan's diplomatic isolation has caused it to focus on developing soft power based on its democratic credentials and economic vibrancy, and how its government under President Chen Shui-bian nevertheless failed to project soft power effectively. In addition to surveying Taiwan's relations with the international community, the book examines Taiwan's relations with the United States, Japan, the European Union, South East Asia, and its remaining twenty-three diplomatic allies, and discusses how Taiwan can manage its foreign policy more effectively.

The International Status of Taiwan in the New World Order by Jean-Marie Henckaerts Pdf

This book examines the most important issues determining the international status of Taiwan today: its international legal status, the viability of its flexible democracy, its efforts to gain participation or membership in international organizations, most notably the United Nations, and its future relations with mainland China, ranging from reunification to declared independence. Issues of American and European foreign policy and of domestic Chinese and Taiwanese politics are also addressed where relevant. This book is unique in that it looks at the question of Taiwan from the perspective of both international law and politics as it confronts the imperatives of law and the limitations of real world politics. As a result it offers insights and strategies that are both sensible and feasible. This book is aimed at scholars and practitioners of international law and international relations alike.

China's Rise, Taiwan's Dilemma's and International Peace by Edward Friedman Pdf

If we are to believe the media then a war between China and Taiwan is inevitable. Incorporating interviews, archives and original research, this book examines the troubled relationship between China, Taiwan and the US, bringing Taiwanese views on identity politics to the forefront of the discussion. Centering on the primary issues facing Taiwan, China and the US, the book analyzes Taiwan’s need to prevent China’s rule suffocating their cherished democracy. It questions whether China will pursue military force to achieve political and economic dominance over Taiwan, and how the US proposes to maintain peace between these two countries to ensure both a continuation of democracy in Taiwan and good relations with China. In highlighting these issues, the book seeks to offer practical policy alternatives that could help to advance the cause of freedom and international peace. Featuring chapters from an international group of academics, the book makes a valuable edition to the understanding of Taiwan-China relations within an international context.

Sovereignty Through Responsibility by Thomas Low Pdf

The concept of sovereignty is an integral component of international relations (IR) theory and practice. As a shared norm of international society it performs a critical structural function, binding political communities into nominally equal nation states. Sovereignty sets the parameters for political agency at global and national levels, dictating which sources of authority can legitimately hold final discretion over political decisions within a given territory. Dominant theoretical perspectives (hand in hand with the powerful actors of international politics) tend to take sovereignty as a given; at once both immutable and unassailable. However, this tendency obscures the fact that, as a social practice, sovereignty has been a site of intense, dynamic contestation. Colonial interests have struggled to retain authority in the face of rising indigenous independence movements; civil wars and separatism have produced contradicting sovereign claims. More recently, sovereignty has received growing attention where it intersects with international law, interventionism, and human rights. This research takes sovereignty as the central object of investigation by applying an in-depth case study of recent developments in sovereignty discourse in the Republic of China (hereby referred to as ROC or Taiwan), to develop a more holistic understanding of how political communities construct (and reconstruct) ideas. Specifically, the study describes and analyses a discourse of ‘sovereignty through responsibility' that has gained traction throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. This analysis not only explores how the practices of state (and non-state) agents produce this discourse, but also emphasises it's relative position within global structures of power.

Taiwan by John F Copper Pdf

In this newly revised and updated edition of Taiwan: Nation-State or Province? John F. Copper examines Taiwan's geography and history, society and culture, economy, political system, and foreign and security policies in the context of Taiwan's uncertain political status as either a sovereign nation or a province of the People's Republic of China. Copper argues that Taiwan's very rapid and successful democratization suggests Taiwan should be independent and separate from China, while economic links between Taiwan and China indicate the opposite. New to the sixth edition is enhanced coverage of the issues of immigration; the impact of having the world's lowest birthrate; China's economic and military rise and America's decline; Taiwan's relations with China, the United States, and Japan; and the KMT's (Nationalist Party) return to power. The new edition will also examine the implications of the 2012 presidential election. A selected bibliography guides students in further research.

Words Across the Taiwan Strait by John Franklin Copper Pdf

In August 1993, the Taiwan Affairs Office and Information Office of the State Council of the People's Republic of China published a document called 'The Taiwan Question and the Reunification of China.' This 24-page pamphlet, or booklet, subsequently became known as Beijing's 'White Paper' on Taiwan. Strongly advocating Taiwan's reunification with mainland China, the paper appeared to reflect the People's Republic of China's opposition to the Republic of China making a bid to participate in the United Nations or other international governmental organizations. In this volume, John Copper offers his analysis and critique of Beijing's 'White Paper.' Included in the appendices are the text of the original white paper, Taiwan's response to the document and Taiwan's guidelines for national unification.

Taiwan and China by Lowell Dittmer Pdf

At publication date, a free ebook version of this title will be available through Luminos, University of California Press’s Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. China’s relation to Taiwan has been in constant contention since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in October 1949 and the creation of the defeated Kuomintang (KMT) exile regime on the island two months later. The island’s autonomous sovereignty has continually been challenged, initially because of the KMT’s insistence that it continue to represent not just Taiwan but all of China—and later because Taiwan refused to cede sovereignty to the then-dominant power that had arisen on the other side of the Taiwan Strait. One thing that makes Taiwan so politically difficult and yet so intellectually fascinating is that it is not merely a security problem, but a ganglion of interrelated puzzles. The optimistic hope of the Ma Ying-jeou administration for a new era of peace and cooperation foundered on a landslide victory by the Democratic Progressive Party, which has made clear its intent to distance Taiwan from China’s political embrace. The Taiwanese are now waiting with bated breath as the relationship tautens. Why did détente fail, and what chance does Taiwan have without it? Contributors to this volume focus on three aspects of the evolving quandary: nationalistic identity, social economy, and political strategy.
