Take My Hand by Dolen Perkins-Valdez Pdf

Winner of the 2023 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work - Fiction “Deeply empathetic yet unflinching in its gaze…an unforgettable exploration of responsibility and redemption.”—Celeste Ng Inspired by true events that rocked the nation, a searing and compassionate new novel about a Black nurse in post-segregation Alabama who blows the whistle on a terrible injustice done to her patients, from the New York Times bestselling author of Wench Montgomery, Alabama, 1973. Fresh out of nursing school, Civil Townsend intends to make a difference, especially in her African American community. At the Montgomery Family Planning Clinic, she hopes to help women shape their destinies, to make their own choices for their lives and bodies. But when her first week on the job takes her along a dusty country road to a worn-down one-room cabin, Civil is shocked to learn that her new patients, Erica and India, are children—just eleven and thirteen years old. Neither of the Williams sisters has even kissed a boy, but they are poor and Black, and for those handling the family’s welfare benefits, that’s reason enough to have the girls on birth control. As Civil grapples with her role, she takes India, Erica, and their family into her heart. Until one day she arrives at their door to learn the unthinkable has happened, and nothing will ever be the same for any of them. Decades later, with her daughter grown and a long career in her wake, Dr. Civil Townsend is ready to retire, to find her peace, and to leave the past behind. But there are people and stories that refuse to be forgotten. That must not be forgotten. Because history repeats what we don’t remember. Inspired by true events and brimming with hope, Take My Hand is a stirring exploration of accountability and redemption. “Highlights the horrific discrepancies in our healthcare system and illustrates their heartbreaking consequences.”—Essence

Darkness, Take My Hand by Dennis Lehane Pdf

Master of new noir Dennis Lehane magnificently evokes the dignity and savagery of working-class Boston in Darkness, Take My Hand, a terrifying tale of redemption. Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro’s latest client is a prominent Boston psychiatrist, running scared from a vengeful Irish mob. The private investigators know about cold-blooded retribution. Born and bred on the mean streets of blue-collar Dorchester, they’ve seen the darkness that lives in the hearts of the unfortunate. But an evil for which even they are unprepared is about to strike, as secrets that have long lain dormant erupt, setting off a chain of violent murders that will stain everything – including the truth. With razor-sharp dialogue and penetrating prose, Darkness, Take My Hand is another superior crime novel from the author of Mystic River; Gone, Baby, Gone; and Shutter Island.

One Man Guy by Michael Barakiva Pdf

Alek Khederian should have guessed something was wrong when his parents took him to a restaurant. Everyone knows that Armenians never eat out. Why bother, when their home cooking is far superior to anything "these Americans" could come up with? Between bouts of interrogating the waitress and criticizing the menu, Alek's parents announce that he'll be attending summer school in order to bring up his grades. Alek is sure this experience will be the perfect hellish end to his hellish freshmen year of high school. He never could've predicted that he'd meet someone like Ethan. Ethan is everything Alek wishes he were: confident, free-spirited, and irreverent. When Ethan gets Alek to cut school and go to a Rufus Wainwright concert in New York City's Central Park, Alek embarks on his first adventure outside the confines of his suburban New Jersey existence. He can't believe a guy this cool wants to be his friend. And before long, it seems like Ethan wants to be more than friends. Alek has never thought about having a boyfriend—he's barely ever had a girlfriend—but maybe it's time to think again. Michael Barakiva's One Man Guy is a romantic, moving, laugh-out-loud-funny story about what happens when one person cracks open your world and helps you see everything—and, most of all, yourself--like you never have before.

Comforting Touch in Dementia and End of Life Care by Barbara Goldschmidt,Niamh van Meines Pdf

*Highly Commended in the Popular Medicine category at the 2012 British Medical Association Book Awards* The simple sensation of touching someone's hand can have a powerful therapeutic effect. Hand massage is a positive and meaningful way of reaching out and providing comfort to those who are elderly, ill or nearing the end of life, and it can be particularly effective for people with dementia who may respond well to positive non-verbal interaction. This book offers inspiration for all caregivers looking for an alternative way to support and connect with a family member, friend or patient in their care. It teaches an easy 30 minute hand massage sequence and offers clear instructions and detailed illustrations to guide the reader through each step. Combining light massage strokes with focused awareness, and paying close attention to points on energy pathways, this book introduces a structured way of sharing touch that is grounded in Western and Eastern massage traditions. Gentle touch therapy is ideal for healthcare professionals and family members alike, and has been shown to have physical and emotional benefits for both the giver and the receiver.

Take My Hand and Walk with Me by Anne Carbone Pdf

In this book I share my journey with God and how it unfolded over my life time. My journey began on a dark November night when I lost my way. I was returning from a cousins birthday party in Brooklyn. It was one am. I missed the turn on a road I had driven all of my youth growing up in Brooklyn. Not quite sure where I was I stopped at a stop sign and began to pray. I was scared, as the neighborhood was alive with drug activity and crowded street corners. In a few minutes of that prayer the front part of a white tractor trailer pulled along side my car. I lowered my window and asked this big burly man for directions back to the main artery that would lead me to the ninety mile trip home. He told me to follow him as he was going that way, but had to make a stop first. Had I not heard the compassion in his voice I would have never followed him. We weaved through streets unknown to me and made a stop in front of a housing project. I left the motor running and waited. He returned with a women who climbed into the cab. Again we weaved through streets unknown to me. Suddenly he stopped and began to walk over to my car. I gripped the steering wheel. He pointed to a big sign that announced the entrance to the expressway that would lead me home. Filled with joy I lowered my window to express my thanks. He returned to his truck made a right hand turn as I made the left to enter on to the expressway. I had a clear view of the flaps on his back tires as the street lights reflected their glow. It said Transportation for Christ. My journey had begun.

Savior, Savior, Hold My Hand by Piri Thomas Pdf

"Many people write about the ghetto. Piri Thomas lived there. In this book, the author of 'Down these mean streets" tells what he found when he returned from a seven-year prison term. Friends dying on heroin, or getting rich selling it. Jobs he couldn't get, not because he lacked training or ability, but because the union was only open to whites. And an indomitable aunt who brought him to her church, where he met the woman who became his wife, and where he began to take an interest in helping others."--Jacket.

Take My Hand: Two Best Friends, Two Sons Fighting for Their Lives, One True Story about Motherhood, Grief and Hope. by Kerry Fisher,Pat Sowa Pdf

In this heartfelt, brave and honest account, Kerry Fisher and Pat Sowa share everything they've learnt from surviving the darkest of times. They shine a light on what it really feels like when your world shatters and how they found hope in the deepest despair. Best friends since they met at university, Kerry and Pat had no idea that thirty years later, they'd need every ounce of their friendship to survive. In 2017, their worlds came crashing down when their teenage sons were both diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses within weeks of each other. During the following rollercoaster months, Kerry and Pat regularly snatched time to message each other - often with black humour - providing a momentary refuge from their frightening realities. Together these two ordinary mums found a way to survive their extraordinary challenges and to navigate a new normal in an alien and isolating world. With raw honesty, they share the things they've learnt and what they wish they'd known - from how to tame raging mother guilt to restoring their natural optimism in the aftershock of tragedy. In this profoundly moving book, Kerry and Pat take readers on a very personal exploration of the universal experiences of grief and loss, love and friendship that connect us all. Like a wise companion offering comfort, Take My Hand is a lifeline both to those overwhelmed by heartbreak and for friends and family who don't know how to help. Most of all, it's a powerful reminder that no matter how difficult life gets, you are not alone. Read what people are saying about Take My Hand 'A truly wonderful book ...I found it ultimately optimistic and life-affirming. This book celebrates love - not only mother love, but the love of family and friends, the power of true friendship, and the power of simple kindness - how small kindnesses, particularly those of strangers, can make a difference to the daily life of someone who is on the edge of the abyss... not only will it provide vital support for anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation to Pat or Kerry, but it may just save a life.' Susan Elliot Wright 'Utterly beautiful. Heart-breaking, honest, raw, inspiring, brave, and eye-opening. The subject matter was handled so sensitively, and I think it will be something that many people find helpful.' Louise Beech 'Gut-wrenchingly powerful and moving but also, at times, unexpectedly hilarious. Crammed with insight, wisdom and love.' Nicola Gill 'Two women on a journey from suffering to hope and inspiring the reader to join them on the road. Inspired and inspiring.' Ged Flynn, CEO of Papyrus Prevention of Young Suicide 'The book felt like a love letter to friendship and family.' Milly Camley, CEO of the Institute For Turnaround 'A brave and brilliant book that is, in turn, wise, sharply funny, searingly sad, brave and honest. It is a testament to family and friendship, and to love, in all its colours...What Kerry and Pat have done is to make their experiences of loss and the fear of loss rise up from its pages, generously providing checklists for others who may be navigating grief, in all its colours.' Hold My Hand by Michael Barakiva Pdf

Michael Barakiva's Hold My Hand is a funny, smart, relatable take on the joy and challenges of teenage love, the boundaries of forgiveness, and what it really means to be honest. Alek Khederian thinks about his life B.E. and A.E.: Before Ethan and After Ethan. Before Ethan, Alek was just an average Armenian-American kid with a mess of curly dark hair, grades not nearly good enough for his parents, and no idea of who he was or what he wanted. After he got together with Ethan, Alek was a new man. Stylish. Confident. (And even if he wasn’t quite marching in LGBTQ parades), Gay and Out and Proud. With their six-month anniversary coming up, Alek and Ethan want to do something special to celebrate. Like, really special. Like, the most special thing two people in love can do with one another. But Alek’s not sure he’s ready for that. And then he learns something about Ethan that may not just change their relationship, but end it. Alek can't bear the thought of finding out who he'd be P.E.: Post-Ethan. But he also can't forgive or forget what Ethan did. Luckily, his best friend Becky and madcap Armenian family are there to help him figure out whether it’s time to just let Ethan go, or reach out and hold his hand.
