Tales from the Back Row by Amy Odell Pdf

"Hilarious, insightful and smart. A must-read for anyone who wears clothes.” —Chelsea Handler *US Weekly, “Riveting Reads for Labor Day”* *Bustle, “2015 Books Every Funny Woman Should Read” and “September 2015’s Best Books”* *Refinery29 “Fall’s Most Highly Anticipated Nonfiction Reads”* *theSkimm, “Skimm Reads”* *Popsugar, “Motivational Books You Should Read this Fall”* *AM NY, “New Books for New Yorkers to Read This Fall”* The Lowdown on High Fashion Cosmopolitan.com editor Amy Odell knows what it’s really like to be a young woman working in the fashion industry. In Tales from the Back Row, Amy—funny and fearless—takes readers behind the stage of New York’s hottest fashion shows to meet the world’s most influential models, designers, celebrities, editors, and photographers. But first, she has to push her way through the crowds outside, where we see the lengths people go to be noticed by the lurking paparazzi, and weave her way through the packed venue, from the very back row to the front. And as Amy climbs the ladder (with tips about how you can, too), she introduces an industry powered by larger-than-life characters: she meets the intimidating Anna Wintour and the surprisingly gracious Rachel Zoe, not to mention the hilarious Chelsea Handler, and more. As she describes the allure of Alexander Wang’s ripped tights and Marchesa’s Oscar-worthy dresses, Amy artfully layers in something else: ultimately this book is about how the fashion industry is an exaggerated mirror of human fallibility—reflecting our desperate desire to belong, to make a mark, to be included. For Amy is the first to admit that as much as she is embarrassed by the thrill she gets when she receives an invitation to an exclusive after-party, she can’t help but RSVP “yes.”

Tales from the Back Seat by David George Pdf

Tales from the Back Seat is an inaEUR"depth study by an author who grew up on the island of Grenada, where opportunities were few and far apart, and his transformation to the American way of life once in the United States. It is a wellaEUR"thoughtaEUR"out nonfiction that would make you want to read it repeatedly. It is filled with moments of sadness and joy, as well as periods of disbelief and shame. As an Uber driver, the author gave a frightening colloquy of the risks and challenges of the job, as well as the mistrust and difficulties he faced daily with the city law enforcement, notably the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) and the New York City Police Department (NYPD). The author also took a critical look at the practices of Uber and how it has hurt his business and that of his fellow colleagues. Tales from the Back Seat makes good reading for everyone, but I expect the individuals between the age group of twenty to sixtyaEUR"five years of age to find it very interesting. They are the ones who most frequently use Uber and would be interested in knowing what their fellow riders are doing or saying. This book would change the readers' perception not only of New York City life but that of the drivers as well. Readers would be surprised to know that for many of us, driving is a means to an end. In short, the author took a noaEUR"holdsaEUR"barred approach in writing this manuscript. He hopes that its content would leave you with your mouths wide open, as though you are gasping for air. It is a pageaEUR"turner. However, you should make time to read and digest it. I would advise you not to read it while crossing the streets.

The Killer in the Back Seat (Urban Legend) by Drac Von Stoller Pdf

If you ever find yourself driving down Old Hollow Road after midnight, whatever you do, don't say these words "The old man's on fire," three times or you will end up like all the rest. That's exactly what happened to Johnny Waters. Johnny wasn't afraid of a legend, especially because he never heard of anyone dying on Old Hollow Road. Johnny's grandfather told him that there was an old man who lived in the woods across from Old Hollow Road. Legend has it that a group of young teenagers had been drinking heavily and decided to play a prank on the old man. The teenagers didn't like the old man because he would run them off his property with his shotgun. This just made them angry. They wanted to teach the old man a lesson. The old man's property was their favorite place to camp out because it was secluded deep in the woods. One day when the group of teenagers came by the old man's property after dark they decided it was time to teach the old man a lesson. One of the teenagers went back to his car to get a gas can. When he returned to the group, he told them he was going to burn the old man's cabin to the ground. After about two more six-packs the teens were out for blood. They poured gas all around the cabin and set it ablaze. The teens stood and watched the old man's cabin burn to the ground. They heard the old man screaming from the cabin, "I'm burning, please save me!" The teenagers just laughed and passed the two six-packs around until the beer was gone. They tossed their empty beer cans in the fire where the old man's cabin used to sit. Supposedly, one of the teenagers heard the old man say, "If you ever ride down Old Hollow Road in your car, don't look in your rearview mirror. If you do, the old man will get you."

Stories, Tales and a Few Small Lies of a Country Parson by Robert B. Horine Pdf

A house cat terrified by an unexpected visit from a friendly wolf. A snowfall that covers a junkyard with a blanket of whiteness. A four year-old boy with an uncanny awareness of Jesus love for each one of us. Bob Horine weaves recollections such as these into stories that bring a smile to our lips and a wistful tug to our hearts. He invites us to see that our ordinary lives are, indeed, extraordinary, and that our world is transparent to the love of God that shines through.

The Tangierman's Lament, and Other Tales of Virginia by Earl Swift Pdf

Go where the story is--that's one tenet of journalism Earl Swift has had little trouble living up to. In two decades of covering the commonwealth, Swift has hiked, canoed--even spelunked--a singular path through Virginia. He has also stopped and listened. This collection brings together some twenty Virginia tales wherein hardship is revealed as tragedy, and humor appears as uncanny, illuminating strangeness. The Pulitzer-nominated title story takes us to the Chesapeake island of Tangier, home to a Methodist enclave over two hundred years old, with an economy almost wholly dependent on the blue crab. The gradual exodus of the island's young people and the dwindling crab hauls point to an inevitable extinction that finds a dramatic metaphor in the erosion of the island itself, which is literally disappearing beneath its inhabitants' feet. An epic piece of reporting, "When the Rain Came" revisits the August night in 1969 when Hurricane Camille descended on Nelson and Rockbridge counties, bringing with it a deluge of nearly Biblical proportions that killed 151 people. It was later characterized by the Department of the Interior as "one of the all-time meteorological anomalies in the United States." Swift looks beyond the extraordinary numbers to find the individual stories, told to him by the people who still remember the trembling floorboards and rain too heavy to see, or even breathe, through. Other stories include a nerve-wracking inside look at the Pentagon on the morning of 9/11, the travails of a failed novelist turned folk-art demigod, an account of a 1929 Scott County tornado (deemed the deadliest in Virginia history), and a profile of Nelson County swami Master Charles, who boasts a corps of meditative followers, a mountain retreat in Nellysford, and an incomplete resume. Each piece reconfirms Virginia as a land uncommonly rich in stories--and Earl Swift as one of its most perceptive and tireless chroniclers.

Tales and Torts by Robert B. Kearl Pdf

“The newspaper headline declared in large bold letters: “Shoot Out At High Noon.” Reading the first paragraph of the article disclosed the truth of the old saying, “don’t take a knife to a gun fight.” The man with the knife lay dead on the ground, while the fellow with the rifle fled the scene in his blue Ford F-150 full-size pickup truck” (from “The Love Triangle”). Tales and Torts: Stories of a Country Lawyer is a unique collection of short stories proving the axiom, “sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.” Each story recounted is based on a real legal case and each illuminates the human condition. Love, prized animals, tragedy, murder, swindlers and thieves, disgruntled family members, and hardened criminals. These tales involve a wide variety of cases in many areas of the law with astonishing fact patterns and extraordinary individuals chosen out of thousands of cases over a forty-year legal career. From the Jewish Russian tenor escaping religious persecution in Russia, to the Tongan travelling to experience the miracle of snow in Canada, to Li jing, whose life was tragically altered on Chinese New Year’s Eve, each character is brought to life with humour, compassion, and an eye to achieving one goal: justice.

Tales from the Kansas City Royals Dugout by Denny Matthews,Matt Fulks Pdf

Amos Otis, Frank White, George Brett, Hal McRae, Dan Quisenberry, Bret Saberhagen, Paul Splittorff—one mention of any of those names can bring about visions of great baseball, determination, and winning. However, one vision outweighs all others: the boys in blue… the Kansas City Royals. The Kansas City Royals, an expansion club in the American League in 1969, struggled during their early existence. It didn't take long, however, before the Royals established themselves as one of the most successful franchises in baseball. That success culminated with the winning of the 1985 World Series. Since 1969, the Royals have developed great players that have had fun. Along the way, they also have developed a winning tradition. Although the Royals have received the "small-market" tag in recent years, the organization still boasts a proud heritage. In this reissue of Tales from the Kansas City Royals Dugout, longtime Royals radio broadcaster Denny Matthews relives the club’s great moments and proud tradition. Sit back and enjoy never-before-told anecdotes, including from the team’s great rivalries with the New York Yankees, Oakland A’s, and the remarkable players who have helped form the legend of the Kansas City Royals. Right Here, Right Now by Lynden Harris Pdf

Upon receiving his execution date, one of the thousands of men living on death row in the United States had an epiphany: “All there ever is, is this moment. You, me, all of us, right here, right now, this minute, that's love.” Right Here, Right Now collects the powerful, first-person stories of dozens of men on death rows across the country. From childhood experiences living with poverty, hunger, and violence to mental illness and police misconduct to coming to terms with their executions, these men outline their struggle to maintain their connection to society and sustain the humanity that incarceration and its daily insults attempt to extinguish. By offering their hopes, dreams, aspirations, fears, failures, and wounds, the men challenge us to reconsider whether our current justice system offers actual justice or simply perpetuates the social injustices that obscure our shared humanity.
