The Don by Lorna Poplak Pdf

An in-depth exploration of the Don Jail from its inception through jailbreaks and overcrowding to its eventual shuttering and rebirth. Conceived as a “palace for prisoners,” the Don Jail never lived up to its promise. Although based on progressive nineteenth-century penal reform and architectural principles, the institution quickly deteriorated into a place of infamy where both inmates and staff were in constant danger of violence and death. Its mid-twentieth-century replacement, the New Don, soon became equally tainted. Along with investigating the origins and evolution of Toronto’s infamous jail, The Don presents a kaleidoscope of memorable characters — inmates, guards, governors, murderous gangs, meddlesome politicians, harried architects, and even a pair of star-crossed lovers whose doomed romance unfolded in the shadow of the gallows. This is the story of the Don’s tumultuous descent from palace to hellhole, its shuttering and lapse into decay, and its astonishing modern-day metamorphosis. You Only Get Letters from Jail by Jodi Angel Pdf

Jodi Angel’s second story collection, You Only Get Letters from Jail, chronicles the lives of young men trapped in the liminal space between adolescence and adulthood. From picking up women at a bar hours after mom’s overdose to coveting a drowned girl to catching rattlesnakes with gasoline, Angel's characters are motivated by muscle cars, manipulative women, and the hope of escape from circumstances that force them either to grow up or give up. Haunted by unfulfilled dreams and disappointments, and often acting out of mixed intentions and questionable motives, these boys turned young men are nevertheless portrayed with depth, tenderness, and humanity. Angel’s gritty and heartbreaking prose leaves readers empathizing with people they wouldn't ordinarily trust or believe in.

The Damage Done by Warren Fellows Pdf

In 1978 Warren Fellows, Paul Hayward and William Sinclair were convicted of heroin trafficking between Thailand and Australia. They were sentenced to life imprisonment in Bangkok's notorious Bang Kwang men's prison, the Bangkok Hilton. For Warren Fellows, it was the beginning of twelve years of hell. The Damage Done takes you behind the bars of a Bangkok prison. A place where sewer rats and cockroaches are the only nutritious food, where autocratic prison guards giggle as they deliver pulverising blows and where the worst punishment by far is the khun deo - solitary confinement, Thai style. Brutally honest and repentant of his initial crime, Warren talks about the decade of his life he lost in leg irons. The Damage Done is a brave and compelling book that poses harrowing questions on the nature of justice. The Buddha in Jail by Cuong Lu Pdf

This is a book of 52 vignettes—stories and teachings about Cuong Lu’s six years as a prison chaplain. Lu shares insights into the prisoner’s mindset, something with implications for us all, whether or not we are in a conventional jail. As a prison chaplain, Cuong discovered that when the men inside allowed themselves to feel their pain—including remorse from committing crimes—knowing and feeling the truth became a source of strength for them. And when the inmates felt listened to, understood, and not judged, it transformed their sense of who they are, and as a result changed their attitudes and their behavior. This book is not just about the prisoners. It’s about all of us. We’re each caught in distorted and limiting ideas of ourselves. We don’t believe freedom and happiness are attainable. But when we come to believe in ourselves, we discover the freedom and happiness already within. Cuong Lu, Buddhist teacher, scholar, and writer, was born in Nha Trang, Vietnam, in 1968. He majored in East Asian studies at the University of Leiden, and in 1993 was ordained a monk at Plum Village in France under the guidance of Thich Nhat Hanh. In 2000, he was recognized as a teacher in the Lieu Quan line of the Linji School of Zen Buddhism. In 2015, he received a master’s degree in Buddhist Spiritual Care at Vrije University in Amsterdam. Lu is the founder of Mind Only School, in Gouda, the Netherlands, where he teaches Buddhist philosophy and psychology, specializing in Yogachara Buddhism combined with the Madhyamaka (Middle Way) School of Nagarjuna.

Jailhouse Stories by Neil Haugerud Pdf

In the 1950s and '60s Neil Haugerud served as sheriff of Fillmore County in southeastern Minnesota. During this time, he and his wife and their four small children made their home in the building that housed the county jail. In Jailhouse Stories, Haugerud describes what it was like to live above a prison, where jailbirds and jailbreaks were part of family life. These are the reminiscences of a real-life Andy Griffith character, a man dedicated to maintaining order during both peaceful and turbulent days in rural America. Through the author we meet colorful characters on both sides of the law: for example, Doc Nehring, the county coroner, who uses dark humor to get through the grim duties of his job, and Irvin Johnson, who becomes the sheriff's friend despite his constant drinking and incarceration. Stories of domestic squabbles and infidelity are mixed with those of church functions and child rearing. Throughout the stories runs Haugerud's compassionate outlook on human nature. "I came to understand how people make a lot of mistakes, but in my view there are very few bad people, " he writes. The town where Haugerud lives is part Mayberry, part Twin Peaks. We get a glimpse into the lives of the town's citizens, whose problems range from the ordinary to the offbeat to the downright bizarre. In stories that are by turns heartwarming and sad, humorous and humane, Jailhouse Stories tells of the trials, tribulations, and pleasures of rural law enforcement during a bygone era.

Tales from the Jail by Marie-Ghislaine Mera Pdf

The storytellers in this novel are prisoners and their visitors. They tell stories of their lives and others-stories they have heard, told, and what leads to their incarceration. In prison, they question their faith, challenge the most rooted religious doctrines, examine their conscience, and reconnect with their spirituality. In jail, some have found God; some have rejected him. Errol Francis, in his fictional tale of when the devil came to town, relates his chilling experience when Lucifer visited his native town of San Marco. He came to set the record straight with his worshipers-learn why they worship him, confront his accusers, know why they make him responsible for their sins, and intimidate non-believers who do not believe in his existence at all. Simon is a single man who took a homeless cat home to soon realize that the kitten embodies the spirit of his dead mother who became a poltergeist to haunt him. Kate, who visited her sister Emilie in jail, recounts the mysterious tale of a cow, jumping off the slaughtering table screaming, "God have mercy on me," causing a riot. The cow killed a butcher in the marketplace. Vietnam war veteran Walt narrates his favorite fictional story about slavery in Saint Domingue, which is about twin brothers, Hector and Homer, who arrived in Saint Domingue as slaves. Hector met an untimely death. Homer avenged his brother then foiled the French settlers when he introduced them to an addictive cocktail drink. Vincent Manchester is a racist who sent a young black man to prison for a crime he did not commit. Sara Manchester, coerced by her father, accused his black friend of sexual assault. Vincent Maznchester was never told the truth about his mulatto half siblings in Jamaica. Martha Manchester is a racist who went to the extreme to keep her white children apart from their mulatto half brothers. Eli is a seventy-year-old man who describes a miracle that happened to a girl called Sadia, rejected by society because of her disfigurement. After a rainfall in the city of Capernaum, USA, Sadia was cured. Ilda, a woman prisoner, remembers how her friend Fanny was heartbroken after seeing her presumably dead husband alive in an Indian village in the state of Sonora, Mexico. The reality sets in for Fanny. Kaleb is alive, but he has a young Indian wife and a baby girl, and he seemed happy. Peggy Armstrong is a fugitive who finally confesses to a priest in the search for redemption. Amelia Armstrong is a mother living with guilt for not helping her daughter keeping her out-of-wedlock baby and for believing that she was guilty of sabotage.

Inside Out by Jenna Carter Pdf

This is a true account of the five years I spent working in a high security jail in the UK. I include stories from prisoners; these stories were volunteered. I do not include any names or specific descriptions of individuals but rather refer to them as anonymous voices. This book provides a unique insight into life in jail arising from my unusual position as a teacher who worked outside the "normal" classroom situation, in a capacity of outreach to every prison location from the wings to the kitchens. The book charts my journey to each location in the prison and presents a 'whole' prison experience as I worked from induction (where men had recently arrived in the jail) to the wings, where some men were serving life. I present my experience, as it was, a remarkable connection with human beings, who in any other context, one might term as 'normal'. In the end this is not my story; this is their story and I leave the reader to make their own judgment.
