The Severed Head by Julia Kristeva Pdf

Renowned philosopher and cultural theorist Kristeva (Powers of Horror: An Essay on Abjection) offers an extended consideration of artistic figurations of the severed head, the organizing theme to an exhibition she coordinated at the Louvre in 1998. Though she follows a single historical trajectory, moving from Paleolithic skull cults to antique Greek sculpture to the Surrealist drawings, Kristeva eschews the disciplinary constraints of art history, instead employing psychoanalysis to explore the intertwined problems of representation and mortality posed by the severed head. For Kristeva, the capacity to figure the life of the mind first requires a confrontation with this horrific object that stands at the boundary between life and death, registering not only the loss of corporeal form but also subjective interiority. Though this book does not engage with recent images of decapitation, it is not without contemporary political-cultural import; for Kristeva, these cruel artistic figurations offer us the capacity to contemplate the sacred within a technology-driven contemporary visual culture. Verdict While a challenging text, this beautifully written and richly layered meditation on mortality and representation will undoubtedly appeal to those readers interested in semiotic and psychoanalytically informed readings of art.-Jonathan Patkowski, CUNY Graduate Ctr.(c) Copyright 2012. Severed by Frances Larson Pdf

Our history is littered with heads. Over the centuries, they have decorated our churches, festooned our city walls and filled our museums; they have been props for artists and specimens for laboratory scientists, trophies for soldiers and items of barter. Today, as videos of decapitations circulate online and cryonicists promise that our heads may one day live on without our bodies, the severed head is as contentious and compelling as ever. From shrunken heads to trophies of war; from memento mori to Damien Hirst's With Dead Head; from grave-robbing phrenologists to enterprising scientists, Larson explores the bizarre, often gruesome and confounding history of the severed head. Its story is our story.

Head and Tales by Susan Price Pdf

Linnet begs his mates to cut off his head, so his children can carry it with them on the road. It's 1770 and Linnet lies dying beside the 'stinking ditch' he has helped to dig for miles. His last desperate wish is for his children to go home to his mother, whom they have never seen. But how are they to reach her safely, without money or knowing the way? His work-mates think it's fever-talk but still... A promise to a dying mate is a serious thing. So, when the children start their long walk, they carry their father's head with them, wrapped in his old work-shirt. But what use is a dead man's head when the children meet danger and difficulty? The head opens its eyes and tells stories. Stories have power. Almost as much power as a father's love. Susan Price has won the Carnegie medal and the Guardian prize and her many books have been sold around the world. She has a life-long love of folk-tale and legend and has published several collections of retellings.

The River Imp and the Stinky Jewel and Other Tales by Anonim Pdf

In Edo-period Japan, readers relished works known as kibyōshi that combined text and illustration on the same page, much like comic books and manga. Monsters often took center stage in these stories. This book presents a selection of Edo monster comics in English for the first time, introducing readers to a captivating, humorous, and eye-opening genre of popular fiction. The River Imp and the Stinky Jewel and Other Tales collects five kibyōshi published between 1778 and 1807, chosen for both entertainment value and stylistic variety. Their authors reinvent traditional Japanese monsters as contemporary characters who mirror the foibles of the human world. They tell stories such as: The lover of the long-necked rokuro-kubi makes a ridiculous attempt to rescue her from her human captor. A mischievous river creature steals a jewel lodged deep inside a boy’s buttocks, setting off a curious chain of events involving a historical samurai and a real-life “fart man.” A demon girl from hell is sent to the world of the living in order to destroy a sacred Buddhist statue—but things don’t go quite as she plans. Exploring the grotesque, comic, bumbling, salacious, and charming world of these creatures, the stories also provide a glimpse into the society and culture of Edo-period Japan through the monsters’ distorted lens. The kibyōshi are reproduced in their entirety, conveying the feel of the original comics and allowing readers to experience the full visual impact of the monsters.

A History of Moonville, Ohio and a Collection of Its Haunting Tales by William M. Cullen Pdf

A History of Moonville, Ohio and a Collection of its Haunting Tales, Revised Edition, is an updated version of a previous work the author had published back in 2008. This revised edition contains more detailed history about Moonville and its surrounding towns, such as Zaleski, on how they came to be, most notably that Moonville was named by the railroad after a general store proprietor rather than the man who had actually founded the town; and that Zaleski was named after a Polish/French financier who never came to America to see his namesake town. This revised edition also contains more haunting tales of what had happened to some of those who had lived and worked in this remote mining town in eastern Vinton County, Ohio, mainly covering those who had been involved in train accidents surrounding the still-standing tunnel as these trains came barreling through the area; plus, there are a few tales of murder as well. There are also a few light-hearted tales most notably that of a well-known English author who had passed through Moonville on his way to tour America back in the late 1860s as well as a story about some feisty sisters, in Athens, who took on the expanding railroad. There are human interest elements in all of this, most notably to me, is the story of the Dexters who had been enslaved in Virginia, escaping in the 1860s, having made their way to Moonville in order to live out their lives in freedom. This book is about preserving the history of a mining town that began back in the 1850s, thriving for nearly fifty years, before it began its long slide into history, though not completely forgotten, for it had been, once, a vital part of Ohios history, especially in the days leading up to the American Civil War; and that is why I wrote and revised this work - for Moonvilles history is a part of Ohios history.

GHOST STORIES OF ST ANDREWS - 17 Scottish Ghostly Tales by Anon E. Mouse Pdf

St Andrews is renowned for its ecclesiastical ruins, ancient university and proud distinction as ‘the home of golf’. Some say the town deserves far more recognition for its paranormal activity and links. In 1911, W.T. Linskill penned the original edition of St Andrews Ghost Stories, of which this is the 4th edition printed in 1921. In this edition he recounts 17 spine-tingling, ghostly stories associated with the historic town in Fife, Scotland. Most seem to have a religious connection to the Cathedral ruins with the ghosts of Priors , Monks, Veiled Nuns and screaming skulls. In addition to an introductory poem, titled Ghosts and Phantoms, in this volume you will find the stories of: The Beckoning Monk The Hauntings And Mysteries Of Lausdree Castle A Haunted Manor House And The Duel At St Andrews The Apparition Of The Prior Of Pittenweem A True Tale Of The Phantom Coach The Veiled Nun Of St Leonards The Monk Of St Rule’s Tower Related By Captain Chester The Screaming Skull Of Greyfriars The Spectre Of The Castle The Smothered Piper Of The West Cliffs The Beautiful White Lady Of The Haunted Tower Concerning More Appearances Of The White Lady A Spiritualistic Seance The Apparition Of Sir Rodger De Wanklyn The Bewitched Ermentrude A Very Peculiar House The stories of the “White Lady”, first in her haunted tower, and other sightings around St. Andrews are of particular interest. Does the White Lady still haunt St Andrews; when was the last sighting of her? Well you will simply have to visit St Andrews and find out for yourself. If you do visit, be sure to tale the St Andrews Ghost Tour. We would also like to know if the story of “The Apparition Of Sir Rodger De Wanklyn” was the inspiration for “Nearly Headless Nick”, played by John Cleese, in J K Rowling’s Harry Potter films. Who knows? This maybe a connection that the author wishes to remain a secret. Oh, and while you’re in Scotland, be sure to visit Nether Lochaber. Why you ask? If you do make it to Nether Lochaber, go to the Fairy Hill, for it is said you may hear the music of fairies with your own ears. But you must go on a fine day…… YESTERDAY'S BOOKS FOR TODAY'S CHARITIES 10% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities ---------------------------- KEYWORDS/TAGS: fairy tales, folklore, myths, legends, children’s stories, children’s stories, bygone era, Linskill, St Andrews Ghost Stories, ghosts, gouls, 17 stories, spine-tingling, hair raising, Beckoning Monk, Haunting, Mystery, Lausdree Castle, Haunted Manor House, Duel At St Andrews, Apparition, Prior Of Pittenweem, Phantom Coach, Veiled Nun, St Leonards, Monk, St Rule’s Tower, Captain Chester, Screaming Skull, Greyfriars, Spectre, Castle, Smothered Piper, West Cliffs, Beautiful White Lady, Haunted Tower, Spiritualistic, Séance, Sir Rodger De Wanklyn, Bewitched Ermentrude, Peculiar House, Harry potter, J K Rowling, Nether Lochaber, Fairy Hill, music, cold,

The Modern Weird Tale by S.T. Joshi Pdf

This is a critical study of many of the leading writers of horror and supernatural fiction since World War II. The primary purpose is to establish a canon of weird literature, and to distinguish the genuinely meritorious writers of the past fifty years from those who have obtained merely transient popular renown. Accordingly, the author regards the complex, subtle work of Shirley Jackson, Ramsey Campbell, Robert Aickman, T.E.D. Klein, and Thomas Ligotti as considerably superior to the best-sellers of Stephen King, Clive Barker, Peter Straub, and Anne Rice. Other writers such as William Peter Blatty, Thomas Tryon, Robert Bloch, and Thomas Harris are also discussed. Taken as a whole, the volume represents a pioneering attempt to chart the development of weird fiction over the past half-century.

Essex Folk Tales by Jan Williams Pdf

The Essex coastline has endured invasion by plundering and bloodthirsty Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, and this mysterious landscape is still haunted by their presence. Their spirits, and countless others, have oft been reported – not least by smugglers determined to keep intruders away from their secret hideouts. Even more dramatic stories of the supernatural lurk inland: accusations of witchcraft have been screamed around many picturesque market towns, dragons have terrorised the community, and a violent White Lady has struck at Hadleigh Castle. Indeed, it is the women of Essex who have stirred the imagination most – from brave Boudicca and beautiful Edith Swan-neck to the adulteress Kitty Canham. Amid the county’s infamous pirates, highwaymen and desperados, Essex can even boast a lady smuggler.

Discussing medieval and early modern 'disembodied heads' this collection questions the why and how of the primacy of the head in the bodily hierarchy during the premodern period. On the basis of beliefs, mythologies and traditions concerning the head, they come to an ‘cultural anatomy’ of the head.

Norfolk Folk Tales for Children by Dave Tonge Pdf

From dark dangerous dogs and wily wicked wyrms, to poor penniless pedlars and lanky, long-limbed lads, Norfolk is steeped in stories. Some had their beginnings here, growing in the telling until they were as big as Norfolk's skies. Others were brought here by travellers from far away — even Viking raiders long ago. Stories that in time would change to suit our Norfolk ways, for as everyone knows — we do different! This is a collection of tales reworked and rewritten by Dave Tonge so that children might learn something of this most special county: its places and people, its strange and wondrous dialect. In this collection of stories, each introduced with snippets of local history, we journey to a place where fact, fiction, truth and lies become as one.
