Tamawaca Folks - a Summer Comedy by L. Frank Baum,John Estes Cooke Pdf

"Tamawaca Folks" was published privately by L. Frank Baum under the pen name John Estes Cooke. It is a semi-fictional, semi-factual, account of the summer community located at Macatawa Park, Michigan, where Baum purchased a summer home in 1900, with the proceeds from his first hit, Father Goose. He nicknamed the house "the Sign of the Goose" in honor of the book. The book concerns Jarrod, a lawyer, who comes to town for the summer. He purchases a house there, but soon learns that Tamawaca's current owners are corrupt. Wilder is an outgoing businessman, while his partner, Easton, is elderly and religious. Jarrod soon learns that the partners have double-sold some lots, built cottages in the middle of public streets, and have failed to clean up public lands or fix public streets. They charge the residents for all services, including water, electricity, grocery, and ferry transport. Jarrod organizes Tamawaca's cottage owners and they purchase the resort from Wilder and Easton. L. FRANK BAUM is the creator of "The Wizard of Oz" series of children's books as well as other fantasies. His young adult books and adult novels were written under a variety of pen names. "Tamawaca Folks" used the by-line of John Estes Cooke.

Tamawaca Folks by John Estes Cooke Pdf

The author begs to state that whatever is contained in this modest volume has been written in a spirit of the broadest goodfellowship, and with malice toward none. He has met odd and entertaining people in all quarters of the world and has brought them together in "Tamawaca Folks" merely that he might weave them into his little romance, and with no thought of being in any way personal. Therefore, since these are many and variant types and can have no individuality for that reason, the writer begs his reader not to attempt to fit any of the fictitious characters to living persons, lest your neighbor try to fit one of my masquerade costumes to you-which would be an impertinence I am sure you would not like. The temptation, I admit, is natural, because the people portrayed are all human and even their composites have prototypes in nearly every locality. But desist, I entreat you.

Tanawaca Folks by L. Frank. Baum Pdf

First published in 1907 under the pseudonym John Estes Cooke, ‘Tamawaca Folks’ is a humorous semi-autobiographical novel by the famous author L. Frank Baum. Based on real events in a Michigan resort town where Baum had a summer house, the story follows the exploits of Kansas City lawyer Jarrod who comes to spend the summer in the resort. He discovers the developers are corrupt frauds and sets about organising the residents to oppose their wicked ways and gain control of the town. Lyman Frank Baum (1856 – 1919) was a prolific and well-known American writer. He is best known for his famous series of modern fairy tales set in the imaginary land of Oz. The first of the books, ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ is widely considered to be the first true American fairy tale and was the basis for the hugely popular 1939 classic musical ‘The Wizard of Oz’ starring Judy Garland. Born and raised in New York, Baum held a range of jobs including as a poultry farmer, clerk, and storekeeper before pursuing his talent for writing at the age of 41. He wrote 14 novels in the Oz series, as well as over 40 other novels and over 80 short stories. He died in California in 1919.

Queer Oz by Tison Pugh Pdf

Regardless of his own sexual orientation, L. Frank Baum’s fictions revel in queer, trans, and other transgressive themes. Baum’s life in the late 1800s and early 1900s coincided with the rise of sexology in the Western world, as a cascade of studies heightened awareness of the complexity of human sexuality. His years of productivity also coincided with the rise of children’s literature as a unique field of artistic creation. Best known for his Oz series, Baum produced a staggering number of children’s and juvenile book series under male and female pseudonyms, including the Boy Fortune Hunters series, the Aunt Jane’s Nieces series, and the Mary Louise series, along with many miscellaneous tales for young readers. Baum envisioned his fantasy works as progressive fictions, aspiring to create in the Oz series “a modernized fairy tale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heartaches and nightmares are left out.” In line with these progressive aspirations, his works are often sexually progressive as well, with surprisingly queer and trans touches that reject the standard fairy-tale narrative path toward love and marriage. From Ozma of Oz’s backstory as a boy named Tip to the genderless character Chick the Cherub, from the homosocial adventures of his Boy Fortune Hunters to the determined rejection of romance for Aunt Jane’s Nieces, Queer Oz: L. Frank Baum's Trans Tales and Other Astounding Adventures in Sex and Gender shows how Baum utilized the freedoms of children’s literature, in its carnivalesque celebration of a world turned upside-down, to reimagine the meanings of gender and sexuality in early twentieth-century America and to re-envision them for the future.
