Tantric Forms of Gaṇeśa According to the Vidyārṇavatantra by Gudrun Bühnemann Pdf

Although the number of publications dealing with Ganesa is not insignificant, few take original Sanskrit texts into consideration. The Tantric aspects of the deity have certainly been studied too little. This book contributes to our knowledge of this less familiar side of Ganesa. It describes his forms according to the Vidyarnavatantra, a large compilation on mantrasastra attributed to Vidyaranya Yati and compiled around the seventeenth century. This text gives the iconographic peculiarities, mantras, and yantras of fourteen forms of Ganesa as well as instructions for the ritual application of the mantras.

Gaṇeśapurāṇa by Greg Bailey Pdf

This book offers a translation of the seven thousand verses of the second book of the medieval Hindu text, the Ganesa Purana, one of two Puranas dedicated to the important elephant-headed god. In this book the reader is given many narratives about Ganesas ascent to earth in order to kill demonic figures who threaten to overthrow the correct world order. In addition, these narratives contain myths about Ganesa's birth and family as well as some extended and quite humorous myths about ideal devotees of the god.The translation is preceded by a long introduction offering a geographical and historical context for the GanesaPurana. Following the translation are very extensive notes which bring our points of philological interest, but focus mainly on the literary structure of the text and the methods used to present the many myths and narratives in a coherent and fully integrated manner.

Maṇḍalas and Yantras in the Hindu Traditions by Gudrun Bühnemann Pdf

In recent years maṇḍalas have attracted much interest among a wider public. The main focus of such interest has been directed toward Tibetan maṇḍalas, specimens of which have been included in numerous publications. But maṇḍalas are found across a wide spectrum of South Asian religious traditions, including those of the Hindus and Jains. Hindu maṇḍalas and yantras have hardly been researched. This book attempts to fill this gap by clarifying important aspects of maṇḍalas and yantras in specific Hindu traditions through investigations by renowned specialists in the field. Its chapters explore maṇḍalas and yantras in the Smārta, Pāñcarātra, Śaiva and Śākta traditions. An essay on the vāstupuruṣamaṇḍala and its relationship to architecture is also included. With 13 colour plates.

The Life of the Buddha by Gudrun Bühnemann Pdf

This book describes, analyses and reproduce line drawings from two manuscripts and a related section from a third manuscript. These are:1. Manuscript M.82.169.2, preserved in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (circa late 19th century)2. Manuscript 82.242-1-24, preserved in the Newark Museum (from the later part of the 20th century) and3. A section from manuscript 440 in the private collection of Ian Alsop, Santa Fe, New Mexico (early 20th century). The line drawings depict Hindu/Saiva and Buddhist deities and themes, but the Buddhist material is predominant, as one would expect in artists' sketchbooks from Patan. The sketchbooks are important for several reasons. They provide drawings of a large number of deities, including some groups rarely depicted elsewhere. Among them are the EIght Great Bodhisattvas, the Eight Siddhas, the Nine Serpents and - corresponding to the months of the year - twelve forms of Narayana and Lokesvara, and (associated with the ekadasi days of the months) twelve forms of Mahadeva. Many of the deities and legends are relevant to contemporary Newar Buddhism. The two narratives are of special interest. They deal with the life story of Sakyamuni Buddha and the legend of Sarvajnamitra(pada). The illustrated life story of the Buddha follows the Newar tradition, which incorporates the episodes of the sufferings of Yasodhara after Sarvarthasiddha's departure and of the Buddha's (return) journey to Lumbini (lumniniyatra). The book also contains a longer section on Srstikarta Lokesvara, a form of Avalokitesvara who emanates Brahmanical divinities from his body.
