Teaching and Learning of Fluid Mechanics, Volume II by Ashwin Vaidya Pdf

This book is devoted to the teaching and learning of fluid mechanics. Fluid mechanics occupies a privileged position in the sciences; it is taught in various science departments including physics, mathematics, mechanical, chemical and civil engineering and environmental sciences, each highlighting a different aspect or interpretation of the foundation and applications of fluids. While scholarship in fluid mechanics is vast, expanding into the areas of experimental, theoretical and computational fluid mechanics, there is little discussion among scientists about the different possible ways of teaching this subject. We think there is much to be learned, for teachers and students alike, from an interdisciplinary dialogue about fluids. This volume therefore highlights articles which have bearing on the pedagogical aspects of fluid mechanics at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Teaching Thermodynamics by Jeffrey D. Lewins Pdf

It seemed appropriate to arrange a meeting of teachers of thermodynamics in the United Kingdom, a meeting held in the pleasant surroundings of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, in Sept~mber, 1984. This volume records the ideas put forward by authors, the discussion generated and an account of the action that discussion has initiated. Emphasis was placed on the Teaching of Thermodynamics to degree-level students in their first and second years. The meeting, a workshop for practitioners in which all were expected to take part, was remarkably well supported. This was notable in the representation of essentially every UK university and polytechnic engaged in teaching engineering thermodynamics and has led to a stimulating spread of ideas. By intention, the emphasis for attendance was put on teachers of engineering concerned with thermodynamics, both mechanical and chemical engineering disciplines. Attendance from others was encouraged but limited as follows: non-engineering acad emics, 10%, industrialists, 10%. The record of attendance, which will also provide addresses for direct correspondance, will show the broad cover achieved. I am indeed grateful for the attendance of those outside the engineering departments who in many cases brought a refreshing approach to discussions of the 'how' and 'why' of teaching thermodynamics. It was also notable that many of those speaking from the polytechnics had a more original approach to the teaching of thermodynamics than those from conventional universities. The Open University however brought their own special experience to bear.

Fluid Dynamics by Constantine Pozrikidis Pdf

Ready access to computers at an institutional and personal level has defined a new era in teaching and learning. The opportunity to extend the subject matter of traditional science and engineering disciplines into the realm of scientific computing has become not only desirable, but also necessary. Thanks to port ability and low overhead and operating costs, experimentation by numerical simulation has become a viable substitute, and occasionally the only alternative, to physical experiment at ion. The new environment has motivated the writing of texts and mono graphs with a modern perspective that incorporates numerical and com puter programming aspects as an integral part of the curriculum: meth ods, concepts, and ideas should be presented in a unified fashion that motivates and underlines the urgency of the new elements, but does not compromise the rigor of the classical approach and does not oversimplify. Interfacing fundamental concepts and practical methods of scientific computing can be done on different levels. In one approach, theory and implement at ion are kept complementary and presented in a sequential fashion. In a second approach, the coupling involves deriving compu tational methods and simulation algorithms, and translating equations into computer code instructions immediately following problem formu lations. The author of this book is a proponent of the second approach and advocates its adoption as a means of enhancing learning: interject ing methods of scientific computing into the traditional discourse offers a powerful venue for developing analytical skills and obtaining physical insight.
