Teatime Pastries and Punishments by Leighann Dobbs Pdf

A Classic English Village Whodunit that combines characters from two of USA Today Bestselling Author Leighann Dobbs’ most beloved series in a humorous whodunit that will keep you guessing until the end. A dead body in the koi pond of the Twigsledge Flower Show is nothing unusual for amateur sleuth Ida Johnston who is vacationing in the English village where the show is being held. She’s sure she can solve the crime before afternoon tea, especially since she already has her first suspect - the strange cat-attracting woman who is vacationing in the cottage next to her. Elspeth Whipple is no slouch when it comes to solving murders, either. It hasn’t escaped her notice that the strange scone-stealing woman in the cottage next to her doesn’t seem to be disturbed by the body. Could that be because the woman put it there? When their amateur sleuthing puts them on the radar of the local police, the two women are forced to team up in order to clear their names. Finding the killer is no easy task, however, especially when the entire village had reason to want the victim dead. This stand-alone mystery combines characters from the Mystic Notch Cozy Mystery Series and the Lexy Baker Cozy Mystery Series and is perfect for fans of Miss Marple, Midsomer Murders and Murder She Wrote.

Germania by Simon Winder Pdf

The Sunday Times Bestseller 'Entertaining and informative . . . Delightful' Independent There are many reasons to be fascinated by Germany: forests, architecture and fairy tales, not to mention its history and inhabitants’ penchant for very peculiar food. Our distant and often maligned cousin, this is a place in which innumerable strange characters have held power, in which a chaotic jigsaw of borders have moved about seemingly at random, and which at the dark heart of the 20th century fell into the hands of truly terrible forces. And now Simon Winder is here to tell us everything else there is to know about this mesmerizing, tortured and endlessly fascinating country. Germania is also a personal guide to the Germany that Simon Winder loves. In this startlingly vibrant account, Winder describes Germany’s past afresh, starting with the shaggy world of the ancient forests, all the way up to the present day – and in doing so, he sees and begins to understand a country much like our own: Protestant, aggressive and committed to betterment. Joining Danubia and Lotharingia in Winder’s endlessly fascinating retelling of European history, Germania is a brilliant, vivid and enthusiastic insight to the hidden wonders of Germany

A Grimsby Life - Part 1: Henry the Ninth by Harry Goulding Pdf

In the late 1970s, retired Grimsby schoolmaster, Harry Goulding, wrote his memoirs, longhand, on sheets of paper rescued from a skip and they lay for many years in the safe-keeping of his grandchildren until they were transcribed into two books; the first (this book) detailing his childhood days up until the end of his college days; the second, 'Man's Estate, ' chronicling his often-turbulent career as an eccentric schoolmaster in Grimsby. In 'Henry the Ninth' we learn of the poverty of his childhood; the struggle to supplement his 1/2d per week pocket money; the rat-catching and the pig-keeping; his annual trips on the trawlers; the yearning for independence from his domineering father; the family war over his grandfather's will; his struggles at school; and his eventual and reluctant choice of profession, among many other incidents, happy and bitter. In addition, his story represents a valuable local history insight into life in the poor quarter of Grimsby in the early part of the twentieth century.

Pamela Hansford Johnson by Deirdre David Pdf

Deirdre David traces the successful writing life of Pamela Hansford Johnson (1912-1981) from the time of her childhood growing up in a theatrical household in South London to her death as the widow of the novelist and popular intellectual C. P. Snow. Forced to leave school at sixteen, she trained as a shorthand typist, worked for four years in the mid 1930 for a West End Bank, and conducted a tumultuous romance with the then 19-year old poet Dylan Thomas. Thomas having persuaded her she would become a better novelist than a poet she published a scandalous first novel in 1935 and went on to publish close to thirty more in her career. A passionate defender of the narrative traditions of the British novel, she contributed many essays and reviews on contemporary fiction to periodicals and newspapers; in her own fiction, in the nineteenth-century traditions of Jane Austen, George Eliot, and Charles Dickens, she focused on the domestic everyday, the moral questions facing a rapidly-changing society, and the challenges and pleasures of urban life. She was very much a novelist of the city, particularly London. She also gained praise and criticism for her writings about violence and pornography, especially in her well-known analysis of the notorious Moors murder trial. With C. P. Snow, she travelled many times to the United States and the Soviet Union and at the time of her death in 1981, she was still at work on her last novel. Hers was a rich, courageous, and politically committed writing life, and this biography restores Johnson's work to the critical distinction it received when it was published.

Just Desserts by Sally Cline Pdf

A fascinating study of a subject which engages all women. Unlike other books on food, this one takes women's total relationship to the subject, i.e. shopping, cooking, literary images, media messages as well as food disorders. And it shows not only that women's relationship to food is fraught with contradiction, but that the realm of food is yet another focal point in the battle between the sexes. Pleasing their men, nourishing their babies, satisfying growing families, and denying themselves, women, who lack power in so many areas, exercise control through food. Also examines our attitudes toward fatness.
