What has happened to Moshe and Rivkah we do not know, only that their house is now being used for an extraordinary storytelling, a spiritual discipline to share with those willing to risk examining the very core of their beliefs.
Telling Tales by Catherine A. Cavanaugh,Randi R. Warne Pdf
Women played a vital role in the shaping of the West in Canada between the 1880s and 1940s. Yet surprisingly little is known about their contributions or the differences sex and gender made to the opportunities and obstacles women encountered. Telling Tales contributes to the rewriting of western Canada's past by integrating women into the shifting power matrix of class, race, and gender that formed the basis of colonization and settlement. Telling Tales both challenges founding myths of the region and inspires rethinking of how we tell the story of western Canadian colonization and settlement.

Arthur Ray's extensive knowledge in the history of the fur trade and Native economic history brought him into the courts as an expert witness in the mid-1980s. For over twenty-five years he has been a part of landmark litigation concerning treaty rights, Aboriginal title, and Métis rights. In Telling It to the Judge, Ray recalls lengthy courtroom battles over lines of evidence, historical interpretation, and philosophies of history, reflecting on the problems inherent in teaching history in the adversarial courtroom setting. Told with charm and based on extensive experience, Telling It to the Judge is a unique narrative of courtroom strategy in the effort to obtain constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and treaty rights.

The author observes that interestingly, most people believe they are good at communication. Most believe that they listen well, although they know they don’t. This is especially the case when we consider that listening is more than an auditory exercise. It involves looking, thinking, smelling, touching, and sometimes even tasting. An introverted woman is overwhelmed by all the people living inside her when she comes to see psychotherapist, Dr. Freyn, for help. As she slips into a chair in her therapist’s office week after week, she does not know who she is anymore. When her weekly sessions hit an impasse, Dr. Freyn encourages her to release her internal companions so they may tell their own stories. As Dr. Freyn shows her pictures--a different one each week--and asks her to tell a story based on the pictures, the patient leads the therapist through a maze of interconnected relationships, madness, suicide, growth, and synthesis as she achieves a deeper connection with herself. As her characters spin a web of narratives that span the latter half of the twentieth century, the boundaries between fantasy and reality, truth and lies, and sanity and madness become blurred as the past and future attempt to reinvent each other. Telling Stories is the tale of one woman’s confrontation with her fragmented self and her journey to self-understanding through the stories of the internal characters who haunt her.

Slavery in the United States lasted more than two centuries. The adoption of the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in December 1865 abolished slavery after the American Civil War. The first slaves were forcibly removed from Africa by British slave traders beginning in the early 1600s. Redoshi, later renamed Sally Smith, was the last surviving female slave brought to the U.S. from Africa. A Benoise war captive, she was illegally transported to the US (importing slaves having been outlawed 50 years prior). The last surviving male slave, Oluale Kossula (aka Cudjo Lewis), had been transported on the sale ship and was most likely part of the Yoruba people in Benin. The quality of a slave’s life depended completely on their master’s will. It was considered normal, for example, for masters to rape their slaves, who were considered their property. Slaves who escaped were branded, killed, or punished severely in other ways. Solomon Northup Twelve Years a Slave Booker T. Marina Warner and the Ethics of Telling Silenced Stories by Lisa Propst Pdf
Efforts to fight back against silencing are central to social justice movements and scholarly fields such as feminist and postcolonial studies. But claiming to give voice to people who have been silenced always risks appropriating those people's stories. Lisa Propst argues that the British novelist and public intellectual Marina Warner offers some of the most provocative contemporary interventions into this dilemma. Tracing her writing from her early journalism to her novels, short stories, and studies of myths and fairy tales, Propst shows that in Warner's work, features such as stylized voices and narrative silences - tales that Warner's books hint at but never tell - question the authority of the writer to tell other people's stories. At the same time they demonstrate the power of literature to make new ethical connections between people, inviting readers to reflect on whom they are responsible to and how they are implicated in social systems that perpetuate silencing. By exploring how to combat silencing through narrative without reproducing it, Marina Warner and the Ethics of Telling Silenced Stories takes up an issue crucial not just to literature and art but to journalists, policy makers, human rights activists, and all people striving to formulate their own responses to injustice.
