Rising temperatures due to climate change pose a significant threat to agricultural systems and the livelihoods of farmers across the globe. Identifying farm management strategies that reduce sensitivity to high temperatures is, therefore, critical for moderating the adverse effects of climate change. In this paper, we use spatially granular climate data merged with four waves of household survey data in Uganda to examine empirically the relationships between high temperatures, agricultural production outcomes, and the adoption (including its duration) of three sustainable agricultural practices (organic fertilizer adoption, banana-coffee intercropping and cereal-legume intercropping). We do this using a fixed-effect model, with instrumental variables to address potential endogeneity issues. Our findings indicate that, while exposure to high temperature does reduce farmers’ crop income, the adoption of these practices can offset the negative impact of high temperatures on such income. Indeed, we show that the benefits of adopting these practices on the total value of crop production increases monotonically astemperatures increase from their long-term averages. Moreover, the number of years a farmer adopts a practice is associated with higher total value of crop production, and this relationship holds across the full distribution of observed high temperature deviations. Taken together, the results suggest that organic fertilizer adoption, banana-coffee intercropping and cereal-legume intercropping are effective options to adapt to rising temperatures in Uganda, and these benefits increase with the duration of adoption. Adaptation policies and programmes must therefore be designed in ways that help farmers overcome initial barriers to adoption of these practices, as well as to support farmers to sustain adoption over time. This may require longer term funding horizons for adaptation programmes, and innovative support mechanisms to incentivize sustained adoption.

A theoretical and experimental investigation of the oxidation of molybdenum to molybdenum trioxide at temperatures at which the trioxide is volatile has been carried out. A rate equation has been derived which includes the effects of mass-transfer parameters as well chemical parameters and is applicable to any situation for which a mass-transfer coefficient can be obtained. The derived equation has been applied to previously reported rate data taken under laboratory conditions using air and oxygen-helium mix-reported rate data taken under laboratory conditions using air and oxygen-helium mixtures flowing at low subsonic velocities, and a set of values for the activation energy of the oxidation of molybdenum has been obtained. The average of these values is 8.51 x 107 J-(kg-mole)−1 (20.3 kcal-(g-mole)−1) with a standard deviation of 2.1 percent. In addition, 32 molybdenum hemisphere-cylinder specimens have been oxidized in a Mach 2.1 heated airstream at a free-stream stagnation pressure of 1.07 x 106 N-m-−2 (10.5 atm) and free-stream stagnation temperatures from 1765°K to 2120°K. The stagnation-point surface temperature and recession rate were determined for each of the specimens. The observed recession rates were compared with the corresponding values predicted theoretically by the derived rate equation and agreement within a factor of about 2 was obtained for most specimens. However, a few specimens ignited, exhibiting recession rates much greater than those predicted theoretically. The high recession rates associated with ignition were found to be the result of a sharp rise in surface temperature which caused some melting of the specimens in addition to their normal oxidation.

Temperature changes of weather stations in Northern-Europe are evaluated for the period 1913-2013 and results are compared with the oceanic cycles of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) as well as the developments of the sea surface temperatures (SST). It is demonstrated that PDO and AMO as distribution patterns of potential oceanic thermal storage and heat release are closely correlated to the nearly in sync changing trends of air temperatures in Europe. In correlation to the warmer or colder conditions it can be observed in Europe that air temperatures are ascending or descending. There are spatial changes of temperatures in the oceanic oscillations of both the Pacific (PDO) and the Atlantic (AMO), their interplay and the dependend transport of latent allochthonous energy are a possible reason for the also ́periodic ́ temperature trends in Europe ... whether for example in Bergen (N), Germany (D) or water temperatures in the North Sea (Helgoland, D).
