Effects of Agricultural Conservation Practices on Fish and Wildlife by Anonim Pdf
"The bibliography is a guide to recent scientific literature covering effects of agricultural conservation practices on fish and wildlife. The citations listed here provide information on how conservation programs and practices designed to improve fish and wildlife habitat, as well as those intended for other purposes (e.g., water quality improvement), affect various aquatic and terrestrial fauna"--Abstract.

Five Hydrologic Studies by Anonim Pdf
"The U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service Center for Forested Wetlands Research has conducted or cooperated in studies designed to improve understanding of fundamental hydrologic and biogeochemical processes that link aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Five of these studies are discussed here. The first is based on observations made on long-term experimental watersheds established in the 1960s on the Forest Service Santee Experimental Forest in South Carolina. It quantifies the soil moisture dynamics, flow regimes, and water chemistry of low-gradient forested wetlands. The second study is being conducted in cooperation with North Carolina State University. It is a long-term project aimed at quantifying the effects of various water management and silvicultural management practices on hydrology and water quality at the Weyerhaeuser Company's managed pine forest in Carteret County, North Carolina. The third study is a long-term ecosystem study on MeadWestvaco's Coosawhatchie River bottomland hardwood site in South Carolina. It addresses questions related to public concerns about the need for protection, restoration, and sustainable management of forested wetlands. The fourth study, which was conducted between 1997 and 2000, examined the hydrology and water quality of intensively managed short-rotation woody crop plantations on International Paper's Trice experimental forest in the upper Coastal Plain of South Carolina. A fifth study was conducted between 1996 and 2004 at MeadWestvaco's Carolina bay site in the South Carolina upper Coastal Plain; it assessed the surface-water and ground-water interactions between Carolina bays and their surrounding uplands. Recommendations are provided for using knowledge gained through these and other studies as a basis for expanding needed hydrologic research with collaborators to address four major areas of water-related issues in the Southeast."--P. Ecology of Dakota Landscapes by W. Carter Johnson,Dennis H. Knight Pdf
An illustrated review of the Northern Great Plains that blends natural history and human history “The most complete, in-depth look at Dakota ecosystems and their history. An absolutely fascinating read!”—Gabe Brown, author of Dirt to Soil W. Carter Johnson and Dennis H. Knight describe the natural and human histories of the Northern Great Plains in this comprehensive and handsomely illustrated book. Covering a vast period of time, they move from geological developments millions of years ago and the effects of glaciers to historical and ecological developments in recent centuries and the effects of agriculture. The book ends with a discussion of the future of this region, mediated by climate change, with recommendations on how to balance agriculture and other pressing needs in the twenty-first century. Johnson and Knight bring decades of experience to chapters on the major ecosystems of the Dakotas. Written for readers with varying backgrounds, and with discussions of the Prairie Pothole Region, the Missouri River, grasslands, woodlands, the Black Hills, and rivers, lakes, and wetlands, the book is unique and will become a long-lasting source of information. Readers will appreciate the plentiful photographs and other color illustrations.

Ecology and Management of Appalachian Ruffed Grouse by Dean F. Stauffer Pdf
A comprehensive overview of all aspects of grouse ecology and management in the central and southern Appalachians, summarizing findings of the Appalachian Cooperative Grouse Research Project. Topics covered include basic biology and ecology re nesting and brood survival; survival factors; food habits and nutrition; home ranges and dispersal; population and habitat management; the future of grouse in the region. The ecology and management of ruffed grouse is well understood for their core range where aspen is dominant and integral to their well-being. But, what of ruffed grouse that occur where aspen doesn't provide for their annual needs? Ecology and Management of Appalachian Ruffed Grouse presents a comprehensive overview of all aspects of grouse ecology and management in the central and southern Appalachians and summarizes the findings of the Appalachian Cooperative Grouse Research Project. From 1996 through 2002, investigators captured, released and followed the fate of over 3000 grouse on 12 study sites from Rhode Island to North Carolina. The primary goal was to understand factors, including hunting, that affect grouse survival, but in the process a substantial amount of additional information was discovered about grouse ecology in the Appalachians. The book covers the following topics: basic biology and ecology related to nesting and brood survival; factors affecting survival; food habits and nutrition effects on ecology; home ranges and dispersal; roosting ecology; population and habitat management; and, grouse management on private lands and the future of grouse in the central and southern Appalachians. This book should appeal to serious students of grouse ecology and management, game bird enthusiasts, and those individuals who are interested in natural history of birds in general.
