Systematic Control of Nonmetallic Materials for Improved Fire Safety by General Electric Company Pdf

"Making a product or an area fire-safe is a complex problem, with many interactive variables. Flammable nonmetallic materials, ignition sources, oxygen-rich atmospheres, fire detection, and fire extinguishment are some of them. A systematic approach to this complex problem is presented in this report. ...The system described in this report was developed for the Apollo spacecraft, and is not, for example, directly applicable to house construction or television set production. The system can, however, be tailored to many industrial, commercial, and military activities."--p.1.

Fire Retardancy of Polymeric Materials, Second Edition by Charles A. Wilkie,Alexander B. Morgan Pdf

When dealing with challenges such as providing fire protection while considering cost, mechanical and thermal performance and simultaneously addressing increasing regulations that deal with composition of matter and life cycle issues, there are no quick, one-size-fits-all answers. Packed with comprehensive coverage, scientific approach, step-by-step directions, and a distillation of technical knowledge, the first edition of Fire Retardancy of Polymeric Materials broke new ground. It supplied a one-stop resource for the development of new fire safe materials. The editors have expanded the second edition to echo the multidisciplinary approach inherent in current flame retardancy technology and put it in a revised, more user-friendly format. More than just an update of previously covered topics, this edition discusses: additional fire retardant chemistry developments in regulations and standards new flame retardant approaches fire safety engineering modeling and fire growth phenomena The book introduces flame retardants polymer-by-polymer, supplemented by a brief overview of mode of action and interaction, and all the other ancillary issues involved in this applied field of materials science. The book delineates what, why, and how to do it, covering the fundamentals of polymer burning/combustion and how to apply these systems and chemistries to specific materials classes. It also provides suggested formulations, discusses why certain materials are preferred for particular uses or applications, and offers a starting point from which to develop fire-safe materials.

Fire Resistance Determination and Performance Prediction Research Needs Workshop by William Grosshandler Pdf

NIST's Building and Fire Research Laboratory is responsible for research into building fires. It initiated a program prior to the events of 9/11 to put structural fire protection on a stronger scientific footing. The catastrophic collapses of the World Trade Center underscored the need to accelerate and broaden this effort to include fire safety design of steel construction. This report calls upon scientific and engineering experts in materials, fire protection, and structural design to identify the research required to underpin meaningful test and predictive methods for use in evaluating the performance of structures subject to real fires. Chapters: History and Current Practice; Fire Testing and Simulation; Fire Resistant Materials; and Structural Performance. Illustrations.

Analysis of Needs and Existing Capabilities for Full-scale Fire Resistance Testing by Jesse Beitel,Nestor Iwankiw,U.s. Department of Commerce Pdf

The study was commissioned to analyze the needs and existing capabiliites for full-scale fire resistance testing of structural connections. The scope of work consisted of three separate tasks. Task 1. Identification of building collapse incidents: The objective of this Task was to conduct a survey of historical information of fire occurences in multi-story (defined as four or more stories) buildings, which resulted in structural collapse. Either partial or total failure of the structural framing members, and/or connections was considered to hav constituted a collapse. Task 2. Survey of fire resistence test facilities: The objective of this task was to survey private and public facilities (for-profit, not-for-profit; academic, local, state and federal government; military and civilian; domestic and international) capable of testing structural integrity of building elements under fire conditions to establish the current global research capabilities in structural fire protection. Task 3. Needs assessment: the objective of this task was to perform an assessment of the need for additional testing and/or experimental facilities to support the development of predictive structural fire protection methods within actual buildings; and if a need does exist, options for meeting those needs.
