Excerpt from A d104-Book of Pathology, for Practitioners and Students Tm: author, having taught Pathology and Bacteriology for thirteen years, endeavors in the following pages to present in a succinct, intelligible, and readable manner the facts that every student should know before he advances from the elementary to the practical branches of medicine. The work has been written particularly for students working for the degree of Doctor of Medicine, who need to acquire the principles of pathology rather than to busy themselves with the evolution of the subject or to enter into the con sideration of its controversial points. Well-known facts are, therefore, pre sented as such, while others are frequently dismissed after brief mention with the frank statement that the matter is not yet understood. Over-voluminousness was the greatest evil that had to be overcome in the writing, and what could be consistently omitted was a far greater problem than what should be introduced. The natural impression of the author was that nothing should be omitted but the size of the manuscript became, and after careful condensation remained, so large, that something had to be done lest its usefulness be destroyed. A kind of compromise was eventually effected by the use of two sizes of type, the more important matter being printed in the standard type and the less important in smaller type. The standard works have been freely consulted and drawn upon, though the names of the authors and the references to their writings have been for the most part omitted, as the work was not designed to be in any sense encyclopedic. The illustrations have been selected for the purpose of assist ing the reader to comprehend the text. Many of them are original, but the author has to thank the writers and the publishers of a number of well known books for their courtesy in permitting him to use illustrations from their works. The borrowed illustrations have been duly credited to the authors from whose writings they have been selected. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Pathology for Students of Medicine It will at first glance be thought that two large publications upon the same subject by the same author within a relatively brief space of time must be alike. We venture to think that the reader will not find in this work any lengthy excerpt from "The Principles of Pathology," but on the contrary will find considerable evidence of modification. Its birth, however, in a certain sense may be laid at the door of the previous work, to be presently explained. Long ago one of the authors of this work was approached by its publishers, and he agreed to write a text-book of pathology of some seven hundred pages, a book, in fact, the size of this lying open before the reader. The result of many years of writing and re-writing was a mass of material sufficient to make two volumes each of one thousand pages or thereabouts, one upon General Pathology, the other in collaboration with our colleague Professor A.G. Nicholls upon Systemic and Special Pathology. The scheme and scope of the manuscript were not what the publishers had sought; nevertheless with rare good-will Messrs. Lea Febiger undertook publication, and doing this took an undoubted risk. The ordinary medical student could scarce be expected to acquire, still less to master, the two ponderous tomes; it was problematic whether the more ambitious and advanced student and the practitioner would be attracted to them. Fortunately, these two volumes of the "Principles" were well received, and when after the issue of a second edition Messrs. Lea Febiger asked that the original contract be fulfilled and that we afford a text-book which should within the covers of a single volume contain the gist of our subject, the loyal support given by them to the previous undertaking rendered it difficult to refuse. Their desire was seconded by appeals from colleagues in not a few schools for something which would embody the main features of the former work without its bulk. Let us confess that we found ourselves in a quandary. We were averse to what might so easily become an act of commonplace book making. Excerpt from Clinical Pathology This book represents an attempt to describe in a reasonable compass such laboratory investigations, whether chemical, histological or bacteriological, as have a practical bearing upon the diagnosis and treatment of disease; to give some account of their meaning, and to assess, so far as possible, their value in practice. Many of the smaller text-books of Clinical Pathology deal with the subject only in part; the complexity of methods in the larger works renders them more suitable to special investigators, and it was felt that a book of intermediate size might be of use to the student and practitioner. The reduction in size has been mainly arrived at by avoidance of a reduplication of methods, in preference to the omission of any essential branch of the subject. Where several methods for the same object are in use, one, or at most two, are described in full: the remainder are omitted altogether. Much of scientific interest has been necessarily sacrificed to the practical application of diagnostic methods, and the book has consequently no pretensions to consideration as anything more than an adjunct to clinical medicine. No list of references is given, and the names of authorities, unless definitely associated with a particular reaction, are for the most part omitted. This volume completes the consideration of Part III. on the Diseases of Special Tissues and Organs, and also contains Parts IV. and V. on Diseases caused ly Vegetable and Animal Parasites, and on Animal Heat and Fever respectively. Under the Diseases of Special Tissues and Organs a chapter is devoted to Malformations, and another to Diseases of the F tal Membranes and Placenta. The subject of Practical Bacteriology was disposed of in the first volume; that of Systematic Bacteriology is contained in this. The bacteriology of some diseases, such as diphtheria, typhoid, and cholera, is described in the section devoted to the Pathology of Special Organs, and such germ-diseases as are not included in this section are described under Systematic Bacteriology. The department of Systematic Bacteriology comprises also such subjects as Fermentation, Putrefaction, and Immunity. It has been my endeavour in this, as in the first volume, to append a reference to the source from which each statement of importance has been derived.
