Images of Thailand by William Warren Pdf

Overall impressions of a strange place are formed in many ways -- perhaps with the bricks and mortar of hard facts such as history, current statistics, and geographical features. But, as William Warren writes, an impression is more often founded on "those airy, elusive, highly subjective mental images gathered irresponsibly and at random along city streets and country roads, glimpsed accidentally through gateways and windows, from buses and taxis and trains rumbling through an alien night." In text and photographs, the always beautiful and often complex, multi-faceted kingdom of Thailand is explored: from temples to rice fields, from historical ruins to laughing faces, from the beauty of a Khon dance to the spectacle of a festival. In Images of Thailand, William Warren and Dean Barrett open up their very personal albums labeled "Thailand" and reveal much of the rich diversity of Thailand's people and of the distinctive culture they have created over the centuries. --Book Jacket.

Unseen Siam by Joachim Bautze Pdf

Researched from a diverse and extensive source materials (including directories, documents in city archives, newspapers, field notes, postcards, etc.) Unseen Siam. 'Early Photography 1860-1910' reveals the careers of 15 lesser-unknown early photographers who worked in Siam, many of whom became court photographer to the then ruling King of Siam. Their work was not only restricted to their photographic cartes-de-visite, as is usually the case, but also large sized images from attributable albums and portfolios. Each reproduced photograph is fully catalogued and thus in many cases discloses the name of the photographer of some otherwise well-known images for the first time. Many of the previously unpublished photographs in this first comprehensive English-language overview of early photography in Siam (Thailand) are not on general view. There is also an extensive bibliography. AUTHOR: Dr. Joachim K. Bautze, art-historian, has taught at the universities of Heidelberg, Tokyo and Berlin. He has guest-curated exhibitions of Indian art in Europe and the U.S.A. He has written, contributed to, or edited, a number of books, catalogues and articles on South- as well as South-east Asian art and photography. 500 b/w photography

Thailand's International Meditation Centers by Brooke Schedneck Pdf

This book explores contemporary practices within the new institution of international meditation centers in Thailand. It discusses the development of the lay vipassana meditation movement in Thailand and relates Thai Buddhism to contemporary processes of commodification and globalisation. Through an examination of how meditation centers are promoted internationally, the author considers how Thai Buddhism is translated for and embodied within international tourists who participate in meditation retreats in Thailand. Shedding new light on the decontextualization of religious practices, and raising new questions concerning tourism and religion, this book focuses on the nature of cultural exchange, spiritual tourism, and religious choice in modernity. With an aim of reframing questions of religious modernity, each chapter offers a new perspective on the phenomenon of spiritual seeking in Thailand. Offering an analysis of why meditation practices appeal to non-Buddhists, this book contends that religions do not travel as whole entities but instead that partial elements resonate with different cultures, and are appropriated over time.

Photographing People - A Guide for Shy Photographers by Kevin Landwer-Johan Pdf

Practical teaching and stories related to the author's life experience teach you how to overcome your hesitancy in photographing people. Shy photographers know how uncomfortable it is being photographed. Naturally, we should be more sensitive, more empathetic, and therefore more capable of creating portraits with depth and feeling. Photographing People - A Guide For Shy Photographers is intended to encourage you to take photos of people. Experience has taught me to overcome the feeling of not wanting to impose when I point my camera in the direction of a person. It's also taught me this fear is common, particularly amongst shy photographers. The book, divided into four sections, is designed to guide you through the adventure of learning to photograph people. Each section demonstrates and teaches how you can overcome the fear of not wanting to impose. You will learn how to manage your camera well. You will also learn how to manage your thoughts effectively to deal with the unnecessary fear that inhibits shy photographers from photographing people. My first review: The photos of people I've taken on my travels are my favorite souvenirs. Along the way, though, I know I've missed so many opportunities because I was unprepared or just too shy to ask if I could take a photo. In this book, Kevin describes how he personally overcame shyness to become the awesome portrait photographer that he is. In this down to earth and easy to read text, Kevin provides practical advice on how to be prepared as well as how to approach and communicate with people you'd like to photograph. This is an inspiring little book. I read it while traveling in Mexico and, in the two days after finishing it, I approached three people for photos and, using Kevin's suggestions, they all said "Yes". If you love taking photos of people, you will love this book. I can't recommend it enough! Maryellen, Davis, California, USA

Economies of Representation, 1790–2000 by Dr Helen Gilbert,Dr Leigh Dale Pdf

Although postcolonialism has emerged as one of the most significant theoretical movements in literary and cultural studies, it has paid scant attention to the importance of trade and trade relations to debates about culture. Focusing on the past two centuries, this volume investigates the links among trade, colonialism, and forms of representation, posing the question, 'What is the historical or modern relationship between economic inequality and imperial patterns of representation and reading?' Rather than dealing exclusively with a particular industry or type of industry, the contributors take up the issue of how various economies have been represented in Aboriginal art; in literature by North American, Caribbean, Portuguese, South African, First Nations, Australian, British, and Aboriginal authors; and in a diverse range of writings that includes travel diaries, missionary texts, the findings of the Leprosy Investigation Commission, early medical accounts and media representations of HIV/AIDS. Examining trade in commodities as various as illicit drugs, liquor, bananas, tourism, adventure fiction, and modern Aboriginal art, as well as cultural exchanges in politics, medicine, and literature, the essays reflect the widespread origins of the contributors themselves, who are based throughout the English-speaking world. Taken as a whole, this book contests the commonplace view promoted by some modern economists-that trade in and of itself has a leveling effect, equalising cultures, places, and peoples-demonstrating instead the ways in which commerce has created and exacerbated differences in power.
