That Toddlin' Town by Charles A. Sengstock Pdf

As a center for jazz and blues, vaudeville, and a budding recording industry, Chicago and its environs probably spawned more nationally recognized dance bands than any other city in the United States in the 1920s and 30s. While ample attention has been paid to their black counterparts, That Toddlin' Town looks at the history of the white dance bands, theater orchestras, radio studio ensembles and night club bands. Sengstock examines these bands not only in terms of the music they played but also in the context of the venues in which they played and Chicago's volatile economic and social climate. Viewing the bands as an economic system, he analyzes them as businesses with all the usual pressures brought on by ambition, personality clashes, and the overriding need to serve clients. More than a mere popular phenomenon, these dance bands--along with their charismatic leaders, powerful booking agencies, and the Chicago Federation of Musicians--had a major impact on the music industry at large and influence over other entertainment media.

The Jazz Age by Arnold Shaw Pdf

Wide-Open Town by Diane Mutti Burke,Jason Roe,John Herron Pdf

Kansas City is often seen as a mild-mannered metropolis in the heart of flyover country. But a closer look tells a different story, one with roots in the city’s complicated and colorful past. The decades between World Wars I and II were a time of intense political, social, and economic change—for Kansas City, as for the nation as a whole. In exploring this city at the literal and cultural crossroads of America, Wide-Open Town maps the myriad ways in which Kansas City reflected and helped shape the narrative of a nation undergoing an epochal transformation. During the interwar period, political boss Tom Pendergast reigned, and Kansas City was said to be “wide open.” Prohibition was rarely enforced, the mob was ascendant, and urban vice was rampant. But in a community divided by the hard lines of race and class, this “openness” also allowed many of the city’s residents to challenge conventional social boundaries—and it is this intersection and disruption of cultural norms that interests the authors of Wide-Open Town. Writing from a variety of disciplines and viewpoints, the contributors take up topics ranging from the 1928 Republican National Convention to organizing the garment industry, from the stockyards to health care, drag shows, Thomas Hart Benton, and, of course, jazz. Their essays bring to light the diverse histories of the city—among, for instance, Mexican immigrants, African Americans, the working class, and the LGBT community before the advent of “LGBT.” Wide-Open Town captures the defining moments of a society rocked by World War I, the mass migration of people of color into cities, the entrance of women into the labor force and politics, Prohibition, economic collapse, and a revolution in social mores. Revealing how these changes influenced Kansas City—and how the city responded—this volume helps us understand nothing less than how citizens of the age adapted to the rise of modern America.

Hidden History of Old Town by Shirley Baugher Pdf

New York has Greenwich Village; New Orleans has its French Quarter; Paris has Montmartre. And Chicago has its own little piece of charm that rivals them all. Chicago has Old Town--an oasis in the steel and stone heart of the city, an old-fashioned, do-it-yourself neighborhood beloved by artists and entrepreneurs as the perfect place to find a muse and raise a family. And while a casual, inobservant visitor can feel the magnetism of the place, lifelong residents may still be unaware of the hidden bits of history Old Town has drawn into itself. Until now.

Jazz Age Chicago: Crucible of Modern America by Joseph Gustaitis Pdf

"When people imagine 1920s Chicago, they usually (and justifiably) think of Al Capone, speakeasies, gang wars, flappers and flivvers. Yet this narrative overlooks the crucial role the Windy City played in the modernization of America. The city's incredible ethnic variety and massive building boom gave it unparalleled creative space, as design trends from Art Deco skyscrapers to streamlined household appliances reflected Chicago's unmistakable style. The emergence of mass media in the 1920s helped make professional sports a national obsession, even as Chicago radio stations were inventing the sitcom and the soap opera. Join Joseph Gustaitis as he chases the beat of America's Jazz Age back to its jazz capital."--Page 4 of cover.

Freedom's Sons by H. A. Covington Pdf

Freedom's Sons is the fifth and last in underground cult novelist H.A. Covington's series of Northwest Independence novels. In the first four novels--A Distant Thunder, A Mighty Fortress, The Hill Of The Ravens, and The Brigade--we followed the path of the War of Independence when in the not-so-distant future, the people of the Pacific Northwest fought a five-year guerrilla war against the overbearing tyranny of Washington, D.C., and finally established the Northwest American Republic as an independent nation. Freedom's Sons chronicles the first fifty years of the NAR's existence as a country and a new society, including the struggle against crushing economic sanctions imposed by the outside world, as well as an attempt by the enraged Americans to reconquer the Northwest with a military invasion. The novel follows the fortune of three families, one of former rebel guerrilla fighters from the Northwest Volunteer Army, one Unionist, and one refugee family who flees to the Republic from the collapsing U.S.A. Freedom's Sons is a story of redemption and the triumph of the human spirit over the darkness now engulfing the world.

The Outfit by Gus Russo Pdf

This is the story of the Outfit, the secretive organized crime cartel that began its reign in prohibition-era Chicago before becoming the real puppet master of Hollywood, Las Vegas, and Washington D.C. The Outfit recounts the adventures and exploits of its bosses, Tony 'Joe Batters' Accardo (the real Godfather), Murray 'The Camel' or 'Curly' Humphreys (one of the greatest political fixers and union organizers this country has ever known), Paul 'The Waiter' Ricca, and Johnny Rosselli (the liaison between the shadowy world and the outside world). Their invisibility was their strength, and what kept their leader from ever spending a single night in jail. The Outfit bosses were the epitome of style and grace, moving effortlessly among national political figures and Hollywood studio heads-until their world started to crumble in the 1970s. With extensive research including recently released FBI files, the Chicago Crime files of entertainer Steve Allen, first-ever access to the voluminous working papers of the Kefauver Committee, original interviews with the members of the Fourth Estate who pursued the Outfit for forty years, and exclusive access to the journals of Humphrey's widow, veteran journalist Gus Russo uncovers sixty years of corruption and influence, and examines the shadow history of the United States.

Fields of Wheat, Rolling on Forever by Lisa Walsh Pdf

Family didn't seem to be important when I was a child. It was something we took for granted. When children played, there would be two parents watching, throwing a ball around and joking or sitting around the picnic table. Well, when I was a little child toddling around, what I remember most is my time with my family in Florida: my mom; my dad; my sister, Chris; and my brother, Mike. Family to me, at that time, meant having both parents around. I believe one of our favorite places to go was Clearwater, Florida. My Aunt Fran and Uncle Al lived on an outlet of Clearwater Bay, a few blocks away from the Gulf of Mexico. My dad would often take us fishing off my uncle's dock. Uncle Al had a boat that we would ride around in as well, and he would let us drive it?but under adult supervision, of course! Mom and Aunt Fran would stay back and either clean the fish that we caught (a dirty job nobody wanted) or just watch us having fun. Mom always liked being outdoors near the water. Along with boating and fishing, we loved looking at the barnacles that attached to the walls around the bay area and around the posts holding up the dock. Mom seemed to be the one most fascinated with these small and disfigured little creatures. She and the rest of us seemed to enjoy watching these creatures just to pass the time of day.
