English Pottery and Porcelain by Edward A. Downman Pdf

Excerpt from English Pottery and Porcelain: A Handbook for the Collector, Giving the Characteristics of the Chief Wares Produced From the 16th to the 19th Century, the Different Factory Marks, and Some Present-Day Values of Typical Specimens Though the collecting of pottery and porcelain has been disparagingly referred to as a "mania" or a "fad," yet even its worst detractors cannot deny that it is an interesting one. Nor is it without historic or educational value, to say nothing of the fact that if made with care a collection may be regarded in the light of a profitable investment. Prices for genuine pieces are yearly hardening, and for even what was once regarded as very common earthenware - lustre, for instance - three times as much as was possible ten years ago can now be obtained. These prices are likely to be still further enhanced, as by the efflux of Time such fragile articles are from their very nature bound to get scarcer. The "craze," or whatever else it may be called, for collecting china has had a considerable literature of its own, though chiefly, it must be admitted, for the comparatively well-to-do and the more or less experienced collector. In the past the less wealthy and the inexperienced have suffered from a dearth of handbooks that would help them. The aim of the present volume is to supply the omission. The Earthenware Collector (Classic Reprint) by G. Woolliscroft Rhead Pdf

Excerpt from The Earthenware Collector Naturally the author touches lightly on the earlier British wares as scarcely coming within the scope of the ordinary collector, whose interest is likely to be confined to a definite period beginning with the pictur esque Slip ware of 'wrotham in the early decades of the seventeenth century and continuing until the opening of the Victorian era, when Pottery shared with the rest of the arts the decline inseparable from the greatly increased resort to mechanical means of production, to say nothing of the tyranny of commercial and utilitarian principles. Catalogue of the Collection of English Porcelain by R. L. Hobson Pdf

Excerpt from Catalogue of the Collection of English Porcelain: In the Department of British and Mediaeval Antiquities and Ethnography of the British Museum The following Catalogue is the complement of the Catalogue of English Pottery in the Museum published in 1903. The bulk of the collection here described was presented by the late Sir Augustus Wollaston Franks, K. C. B. His aim was to gather together such examples of the various wares as would best illustrate the history of the factories, preferring documentary pieces to such as were merely of decorative value. It would not be possible to fix a limit of date in a collection of this class, but comparatively few of the pieces are less than a century old. I have read through the descriptions and introductory matter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Collector's History of English Pottery by Griselda Lewis Pdf

This is the fifth revised edition of a standard work of reference which was first published in 1969. It is a remarkable book that effortlessly and enjoyably takes the reader from the earliest pottery extant dating from the first Neolithic period, through the great classical names such as Wedgwood and Spode, Staffordshire and Ironstone to the more readily collectable pottery of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. There are many individual studies of potteries and potters but here Griselda Lewis succeeds in putting this vast array of them into an understandable historical perspective and traces the links in the development of the rich tradition of pottery in England. This book triumphantly succeeds in the most difficult task of all, that of arousing enthusiasm. - this comment by a reviewer on a previous edition of the work neatly sums up one of the main reasons for the book's enduring success. The new edition contains almost three times as much colour as the first edition and benefits from the wealth of research that has gone on in the past twelve years. There is a large section on modern studio potters and commercial wares that will be of particular interest to the contemporary collector. AUTHOR: Griselda Lewis is author of many books on pottery including An Introduction to English Pottery, A Picture History of English Pottery, Prattware (with John Lewis) and A Handbook of Crafts. 175 colour & 173 b/w illustrations
