It is over a century since Sherlock Holmes made his first appearance, and readers throughout the world still clamour for more of his exciting adventures. 'My mind is like a racing engine, tearing itself to pieces because it is not connected up with the work for which it was built,' Holmes said of himself in his darker moments. Sherlockian Musings by Sheldon Goldfarb Pdf

Is Sherlock Holmes really as rational as he seems? He talks about the importance of reasoning and logic, but why then does he sometimes seem like a "strange Buddha"? On the other hand, why in The Sign of the Four does Watson smash a Buddha? What is going on in The Sign of the Four, that strange tale of Empire? What is going on in all the original sixty stories in "the canon"? In this study of the stories, Sheldon Goldfarb explores questions like these, from the significance of the eggs in "Thor Bridge" to the reason Watson keeps leaving Holmes for an insubstantial wife. What meanings lurk beneath the surface of these detective stories? Why is there an obsession with Napoleon in this story or an article on free trade in this other? Can we find answers to these questions? Perhaps. In any case, in this collection of essays (or "Musings") on each of the 60 stories, Dr. Goldfarb, an award-nominated mystery writer himself and the holder of a PhD in English literature, light-heartedly tries out a variety of perspectives, allowing readers to come to their own conclusions about such matters as the nature of the angel in "A Case of Identity" or the reason Holmes abandons his magnifying glass for binoculars in "Silver Blaze." Who brings binoculars to a horse race? Indeed.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle Pdf

This is a book with 12 investigations of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Dr. Watson, his trusted companion, is the narrator of each of these stories. He documents each one through his eyes and his experience. When Holmes exits the picture or when certain characters involved in the case leave his field of vision, we jump forward to when he witnesses some more. This allows us a lot of mystery as we read. We know that its the most accurate version from Watson`s mouth and this is also what pulls us in. He puts in his initial assessment and then his discussion with Holmes who clarifies his route of action most of the time after the fact. I never thought about this but the image of Sherlock Holmes created by Arthur Conan Doyle is compelling because of this missing detail and because its the opinion formed by Watson himself. The missing parts of where Holmes investigates on his own is where we wonder when he comes back what crazy approach he is going to use next to track down or capture the unknown culprit red handed. It leaves the readers wondering and often times I found myself trying to figure out what the next move was or who the next culprit was. There was maybe 3-4 times that I figured out who was the culprit but I usually would get the twist and details of the actual story wrong. This is also what makes Sherlock Holmes a very attractive character. He inspects and sees the little details that we normally would not associate with how he gathers his information. It takes a lot of general knowledge (I guess, or extensive) to be able to pull those links together from the people he observes or the evidence that he finds and inspects. Overall, I really did find this a very fun novel to read. I loved the character of Sherlock Holmes and will probably seek out his other novels. I always like a good mystery and makes me guess throughout reading it. It allows me to be involved throughout the story and that makes it very recommendable and a great Classic to me!

Mastermind by Maria Konnikova Pdf

The New York Times bestselling guide to thinking like literature's greatest detective. "Steven Pinker meets Sir Arthur Conan Doyle" (Boston Globe), by the author of The Confidence Game. No fictional character is more renowned for his powers of thought and observation than Sherlock Holmes. But is his extraordinary intellect merely a gift of fiction, or can we learn to cultivate these abilities ourselves, to improve our lives at work and at home? We can, says psychologist and journalist Maria Konnikova, and in Mastermind she shows us how. Beginning with the “brain attic”—Holmes’s metaphor for how we store information and organize knowledge—Konnikova unpacks the mental strategies that lead to clearer thinking and deeper insights. Drawing on twenty-first-century neuroscience and psychology, Mastermind explores Holmes’s unique methods of ever-present mindfulness, astute observation, and logical deduction. In doing so, it shows how each of us, with some self-awareness and a little practice, can employ these same methods to sharpen our perceptions, solve difficult problems, and enhance our creative powers. For Holmes aficionados and casual readers alike, Konnikova reveals how the world’s most keen-eyed detective can serve as an unparalleled guide to upgrading the mind.

They include Watson's sketches of the paw prints discovered near Sir Charles Baskerville's body, Holmes's drawings and notes of the "Dancing Men," and Sherlock Holmes's heartrending letter to Watson before his violent struggle with Moriarty in "The Final Problem." Third Collection by Francis London Pdf

The Jewels of Bishopgate: In the spring of 1886, a memorable encounter takes place in Bishop Auckland in the northwestern corner of England between Inspector Athelney Jones and Sherlock Holmes, later described by Watson in "The Sign of Four" as the case of the Jewels of Bishopgate. Sir Redmond discovers, upon opening his safe, that his wife's jewels are missing. Still in progress, he encounters the burglar, who manages to escape. He calls Inspector Athelney Jones for assistance, and fortunately, Sherlock Holmes also intervenes in the investigation. During the nocturnal inquiries, the detectives come across a corpse, but additional peculiar events in the night provide Holmes with initial clues to the solution. The Military Conference: After the investigations into the missing naval treaty and the second stain, Dr. Watson finds himself in July 1887 by the side of his friend Sherlock Holmes in a third major case that determines the fate of war and peace in the Empire. From the theft in a luxurious lodge in Sussex unfolds a politically explosive search for clues, where two additional deaths quickly unsettle Scotland Yard and the political arena. Sherlock Holmes attempts to counter the constraints of politics with his rational mind. Then, another power enters the stage. The French Securities: The visit of a book collector to Baker Street proves to be the prelude to an exciting case in the late summer of 1888. In a parallel investigation, Holmes is asked to assist Inspector MacDonald in the Foreign Office. While initially failing to connect the right threads, a calamity looms, which holds a great defeat for the famous detective. Holmes finds himself compelled to accept the help of his brother Mycroft. However, Mycroft abandons him at a crucial moment.
