The Vizard Mask by Diana Norman Pdf

‘Penitence Hurd and the Plague arrived in London on the same day. Penitence was eighteen and carried a beaded satchel. The Plague travelled by fur-lined carriage and was old as sin...’ Penitence, a Puritan from the Americas, arrives in London with nothing but a great many prejudices, a Bible, and the last known address of her aunt, Margaret. The address turns out to be a brothel in one of London’s least salubrious quarters: St Giles-in-the-Fields. At first the lawlessness and squalor confirm all her prejudices. Yet there’s humanity too, and Pen’s beliefs are shaken. When she meets Aphra Benn, the eccentric playwright and spy for the king, she is inspired to become an actress and fight, like Aphra, to live her life free of men’s control. But soon she is embroiled in the tarnished glitter of Charles II’s court, with its vicious rakes and sexual intrigue, where the idea of an independent woman is a contradiction in terms. It is a battle Pen and Aphra may never win... The Vizard Mask illuminates the turbulent years of Charles II’s reign in joyous detail. This is a boisterous story, richly peopled and told with a wicked turn of wit, perfect for fans of Elizabeth Chadwick and Kate Mosse. ’Diana Norman always strikes gold’ The Times

Of Minstrelsy and Masks by Christine Matzke,Remi Raji,Geoffrey V. Davis Pdf

This collection is dedicated to a distinguished scholar and writer who for a quarter of a century wrote consistently on African literature and the arts and was a major voice in Nigerian literary circles. Ezenwa-Ohaeto made a mark in contemporary Nigerian poetry by committing pidgin to written form and, by so doing, introducing different creative patterns. He also saw himself as a 'minstrel', as someone who wanted to read, express and enact his work before an audience. First and foremost, however, Ezenwa-Ohaeto was someone who 'un-masked' ideas and meanings hidden in the folds of literary works and made them available to an international academic public. With his outstanding work on Chinua Achebe, he influenced the reception of African literary biography. His networks and connections were extensive and wide-ranging, and they are partly reflected in the essays, creative writing and personal notes assembled in this volume. In their various modes and expressions, the contributions included here constitute a tribute to Ezenwa-Ohaeto's many talents and achievements. As an extension of Ezenwa-Ohaeto's legacy, they expand on various aspects of minstrelsy and the un/masking of texts in a Nigerian and broader African context. The book is divided into six sections. "In Memoriam" contains personal tributes by long-standing colleagues, mentors and friends. "Poetry and Fiction" collects the voices of three generations of Nigerian writing from the 1960s to the present day, followed by poetic and pictorial insights into the domestic and social life of the scholar and family man. Section Four comprises two interviews, while Sections Five and Six are devoted to critical evaluations of Ezenwa-Ohaeto's work and to contemporary perspectives on Nigerian literature respectively.

Beneath the Mask by Margaret McGaffey Fisk Pdf

A sweet Regency romance for all ages. Lady Daphne should dream of handsome lords coming to court, but she has little interest in her upcoming presentation. Her sister is slated to save the family coffers by marrying well, leaving Daphne to pursue other interests. The Earl of Scarborough has spoiled his younger daughter by retaining her dance instructor long past when she’s mastered all the formal dances. Little does he know this instructor has been teaching her dance only seen on the stage. His excitement in finding talent blinds him to the false dreams growing in her head of her own debut not in society’s ballrooms but in a theater. Baron Jasper Pendleton grew up in a house with divided parents who could barely suffer each other. His father’s passing left him in charge of decent, if neglected, properties, and he’s gained a reputation for how he brought them back to prosperity, but the prize for such standing is the interest of eager mothers and their daughters who, no matter how pretty, will become as waspish as his dear mother did in her husband’s presence. Love is something denied those of his bloodline, so he puts the securing of their family in his mother’s hands, his time better spent working or playing hard. When a masked dancer’s mystery and passion inflames his frozen heart, can Daphne and Jasper find love when convention sets them on opposing sides?
