The Age of Illumination by Scott Rank Pdf

The Middle Ages are widely considered to be a thousand-year period of superstition, ignorance, and belief in a flat earth, punctuated by witch burnings and violent crusades to the Middle East. But the medieval period, more than any other time in history, laid the foundations for the modern world. The work of scholars, architects, statesmen and craftsmen led to rise of towns, the earliest bureaucratic states, the culmination of Romanesque and the beginnings of Gothic art, the recovery of Greek science and philosophy, and the beginnings of the first universities. This book is a chronological and thematic exploration of the history of the Middle Ages, starting with the Roman Empire's collapse in the fifth century and marches through Charlemagne's reign, the breakup of his empire, the Black Plague, the fall of Constantinople, and everything in between. It explores social aspects of the Middle Ages that are still largely misunderstood (for example, no educated person believed the earth was flat). There was also a surprisingly high level of medieval technology--mechanical clocks, horse stirrups, and even primitive human flight emerges at this time. Most surprisingly, there was a lack of witch burnings, which were not popularized until the Thirty Years War in the Renaissance Period. The Middle Ages were not a time to suffer through until the Renaissance returned Europe to a path of intellectual and cultural ascendance. Rather, they illuminated the darkness following the collapse of Rome and guided the path to the world we inhabit today.

Book of Illumination by Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad Ibn ʻAṭāʼ Allāh,Scott Alan Kugle Pdf

Presenting a mystical and theological analysis of our human urge to create idols for ourselves and out of ourselves, this medieval author carefully recounts the enlightening counsels of his own masters. He is most attentive to the subtle psychological working of our human ego, marshaling resources for his Islamic tradition that can confront and overcome it. The result of desisting from claiming as our right and ability what is clearly beyond our control is illumination of the heart, clarity of the mind, and tranquility of the soul. This new translation masterfully illustrates the goal of Ibn Ata' Allah's discussion of achieving inner illumination of the heart, which is close to the sense of "enlightenment" that has become common in English language discussions of spirituality and gnosis.

The Book of Kells and the Art of Illumination by National Gallery of Australia Pdf

The Book of Kells and the Art of Illumination brings together the Gospel of St. Mark from the 1200-year-old Irish masterpiece with a selection of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts which demonstrate the legacy of Kells throughout the centuries, both in terms of Gospel illustration and of the illuminated book. Not only does the Book of Kells testify to the vitality of Celtic art in the Early Middle Ages, but its fortunes also reflect the turbulent nature of the period in which it was created. This was an age in which the British Isles were ravaged by Viking raids, and monastic settlements, the cultural heart of the country, up-rooted. Yet, against these odds, the Book of Kells survived. In later times it suffered further disturbances, and in the middle of the 17th century, during Ireland's battles with Cromwell, it was transferred from the ruined parish of Kells to Trinity College, Dublin, where ever since it has had a secure and distinguished home.

Illuminations by Mary Sharratt Pdf

From the author of Ecstasty, a novel of a girl who triumphed against impossible odds to become the most extraordinary woman of the Middle Ages. Hildegard von Bingen—Benedictine abbess, healer, composer, saint—experienced mystic visions from a very young age. Offered by her noble family to the Church at the age of eight, she lived for years in forced silence. But through the study of books and herbs, through music and the kinship of her sisters, Hildegard found her way from a life of submission to a calling that celebrated the divine glories all around us. In this brilliantly researched and insightful novel, Mary Sharratt offers a deeply moving portrait of a woman willing to risk everything for what she believed, a triumphant exploration of the life she might well have lived. “Sharratt brings one of the most famous and enigmatic women of the Middle Ages to vibrant life in this tour de force, which will captivate the reader from the very first page.” —Sharon Kay Penman, New York Times–bestselling author of The Land Beyond the Sea “One could not anticipate this majesty and drama…Illuminations is riveting, following von Bingen through…to emerge as one of the significant voices of the 12th century…Unforgettable.” —January Magazine “Gripping…Like Ann Patchett’s Bel Canto, [Illuminations] is primarily about relationships forged under pressure.”—Publishers Weekly “Masterful.”—Saint Paul Pioneer Press

Illuminations by Walter Benjamin Pdf

Essays and reflections from one of the twentieth century’s most original cultural critics, with an introduction by Hannah Arendt. Walter Benjamin was an icon of criticism, renowned for his insight on art, literature, and philosophy. This volume includes his views on Kafka, with whom he felt a close personal affinity; his studies on Baudelaire and Proust; and his essays on Leskov and Brecht’s epic theater. Illuminations also includes his penetrating study “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction,” an enlightening discussion of translation as a literary mode; and his theses on the philosophy of history. Hannah Arendt selected the essays for this volume and introduces them with a classic essay about Benjamin’s life in a dark historical era. Leon Wieseltier’s preface explores Benjamin’s continued relevance for our times. Walter Benjamin (1892–1940) was a German-Jewish Marxist literary critic, essayist, translator, and philosopher. He was at times associated with the Frankfurt School of critical theory and was also greatly inspired by the Marxism of Bertolt Brecht and Jewish mysticism as presented by Gershom Scholem.

The Book of Illumination by Eric Mitchell Pdf

What makes the Book of Illumination stand out among other philosophical and or religious titles is its precision to math, definition, and it's deciphering of prophecy. There truly is no book like it, as it combines every major religion, history, prophecy, pop culture, as well as the occult, into one comprehensive record. It also, with the use of Kabbalah and sacred geometry, animates the lives of past mythological deities, and composites their lives with "stars" that are living today. The revelation given within the Book of Illumination is in direct alignment with New Age prophecy as well as the resurrection spoken of by Jesus. This resurrection is validated by Hinduism, the world's oldest religion, which is also the largest religion in the world that openly acknowledges and promotes reincarnation. Reincarnation, after reading the Book of Illumination, becomes fully realized. It is no longer a matter of theory, as again, the book proves with mathematics and sacred geometry, the existences of ancient celestial beings of folklore and mythology, who walk the earth today in the flesh.

Toward a Global Middle Ages by Bryan C. Keene Pdf

This important and overdue book examines illuminated manuscripts and other book arts of the Global Middle Ages. Illuminated manuscripts and illustrated or decorated books—like today’s museums—preserve a rich array of information about how premodern peoples conceived of and perceived the world, its many cultures, and everyone’s place in it. Often a Eurocentric field of study, manuscripts are prisms through which we can glimpse the interconnected global history of humanity. Toward a Global Middle Ages is the first publication to examine decorated books produced across the globe during the period traditionally known as medieval. Through essays and case studies, the volume’s multidisciplinary contributors expand the historiography, chronology, and geography of manuscript studies to embrace a diversity of objects, individuals, narratives, and materials from Africa, Asia, Australasia, and the Americas—an approach that both engages with and contributes to the emerging field of scholarly inquiry known as the Global Middle Ages. Featuring more than 160 color illustrations, this wide-ranging and provocative collection is intended for all who are interested in engaging in a dialogue about how books and other textual objects contributed to world-making strategies from about 400 to 1600.
