The Age of the Marvelous by Hood Museum of Art Pdf

During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Europeans were captivated by the marvelous. This term was used to describe events or objects that were considered unusual, extraordinary, or rare and that aroused in the viewer a sense of wonder, which the French philosopher Rene Descartes regarded as "the first of all the passions." The taste for the marvelous was remarkably widespread during this period and found expression in the visual arts, literature, music and drama, the natural sciences, religion, and philosophy. Among the reasons for the growing interest in the marvelous were the recovery of ancient texts that commented on marvels and marvelous effects; the efforts of the Catholic church to convince the faithful of the truth of God's miracles; and the profound impact of great scientific achievements, such as the invention of the telescope, that revealed new and fascinating aspects of the physical world. Perhaps most significant was the exploration of hitherto unknown lands by Christopher Columbus and others, which exerted an enormous influence on the European imagination and literally reshaped the way the world was understood. Published to accompany the exhibition The Age of the Marvelous, organized by the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, this catalogue offers the most thorough treatment of the subject to date. The essays were written by a team of scholars assembled by guest curator Joy Kenseth, Associate Professor of Art History at Dartmouth College and a specialist in Italian art of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Dr. Kenseth's introduction addresses both the criteria of the marvelous and the contemporary influences on this phenomenon. A second essay describes the cabinets of curiosities known as Kunst- und Wunderkammern (rooms of art and marvels), that flourished at the time. James Mirollo, Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University, then examines the aesthetics of the marvelous in literature. The following three essays, dealing with anthropological, zoological and botanical wonders, are written by James Welu, Director of the Worcester Art Museum; William Ashworth, Associate Professor of the History of Science at the University of Missouri; and Elisabeth MacDougall, former Director of Studies in the History of Landscape Architecture, Dumbarton Oaks. The last three essays, describing marvels of art, are contributed by Mark Weil, Professor of Art History at Washington University, St. Louis; Arthur Wheelock, Curator of Northern Baroque Painting at The National Gallery of Art in Washington; and Zirka Filipczak, Professor of Art History at Williams College. This book includes descriptive catalogue entries for 225 objects. These works range from paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and illustrated books to maps and scientific instruments. The rich variety of objects in The Age of The Marvelous exhibition and in this catalogue celebrates the depth and breadth of this cultural phenomenon during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

How do you create a life in balance? Mel and Mo may look alike, but these twins’ personalities are far from identical. And maybe each twin has just what they need to create something new . . . together. Mel and Mo’s Marvelous Balancing Act balances complex concepts of compromise and complementary differences with spare language and a simple story structure. Tulipmania by Anne Goldgar Pdf

In the 1630s the Netherlands was gripped by tulipmania: a speculative fever unprecedented in scale and, as popular history would have it, folly. We all know the outline of the story—how otherwise sensible merchants, nobles, and artisans spent all they had (and much that they didn’t) on tulip bulbs. We have heard how these bulbs changed hands hundreds of times in a single day, and how some bulbs, sold and resold for thousands of guilders, never even existed. Tulipmania is seen as an example of the gullibility of crowds and the dangers of financial speculation. But it wasn’t like that. As Anne Goldgar reveals in Tulipmania, not one of these stories is true. Making use of extensive archival research, she lays waste to the legends, revealing that while the 1630s did see a speculative bubble in tulip prices, neither the height of the bubble nor its bursting were anywhere near as dramatic as we tend to think. By clearing away the accumulated myths, Goldgar is able to show us instead the far more interesting reality: the ways in which tulipmania reflected deep anxieties about the transformation of Dutch society in the Golden Age. “Goldgar tells us at the start of her excellent debunking book: ‘Most of what we have heard of [tulipmania] is not true.’. . . She tells a new story.”—Simon Kuper, Financial Times

Marvelous Possessions by Stephen Greenblatt Pdf

A masterwork of history and cultural studies, Marvelous Possessions is a brilliant meditation on the interconnected ways in which Europeans of the Age of Discovery represented non-European peoples and took possession of their lands, particularly in the New World. In a series of innovative readings of travel narratives, judicial documents, and official reports, Stephen Greenblatt shows that the experience of the marvelous, central to both art and philosophy, was manipulated by Columbus and others in the service of colonial appropriation. Much more than simply a collection of the odd and exotic, Marvelous Possessions is both a highly original extension of Greenblatt’s thinking on a subject that has permeated his career and a thrilling tale of wandering, kidnapping, and go-betweens—of daring improvisation, betrayal, and violence. Reaching back to the ancient Greeks, forward to the present, and, in his new preface, even to fantastical meetings between humans and aliens in movies like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Greenblatt would have us ask: How is it possible, in a time of disorientation, hatred of the other, and possessiveness, to keep the capacity for wonder—for tolerant recognition of cultural difference—from being poisoned?

Marvelous Mattie by Emily Arnold McCully Pdf

With her sketchbook labeled My Inventions and her father's toolbox, Mattie could make almost anything – toys, sleds, and a foot warmer. When she was just twelve years old, Mattie designed a metal guard to prevent shuttles from shooting off textile looms and injuring workers. As an adult, Mattie invented the machine that makes the square-bottom paper bags we still use today. However, in court, a man claimed the invention was his, stating that she "could not possibly understand the mechanical complexities." Marvelous Mattie proved him wrong, and over the course of her life earned the title of "the Lady Edison." With charming pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations, this introduction to one of the most prolific female inventors will leave readers inspired. Marvelous Mattie is a 2007 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

The Mysterious Science of the Sea, 1775–1943 by Natascha Adamowsky Pdf

The depths of the oceans are the last example of terra incognita on earth. Adamowsky presents a study of the sea, arguing that – contrary to popular belief – post-Enlightenment discourse on the sea was still subject to mystery and wonder, and not wholly rationalized by science.

The First Treatise on Museums by Samuel Quiccheberg Pdf

Samuel Quiccheberg’s Inscriptiones, first published in Latin in 1565, is an ambitious effort to demonstrate the pragmatic value of curiosity cabinets, or Wunderkammern, to princely collectors in sixteenth-century Europe and, by so doing, inspire them to develop their own such collections. Quiccheberg shows how the assembly and display of physical objects offered nobles a powerful means to expand visual knowledge, allowing them to incorporate empirical and artisanal expertise into the realm of the written word. But in mapping out the collectability of the material world, Quiccheberg did far more than create a taxonomy. Rather, he demonstrated how organizing objects made their knowledge more accessible; how objects, when juxtaposed or grouped, could tell a story; and how such strategies could enhance the value of any single object. Quiccheberg’s descriptions of early modern collections provide both a point of origin for today’s museums and an implicit critique of their aims, asserting the fundamental research and scholarly value of collections: collections are to be used, not merely viewed. The First Treatise on Museums makes Quiccheberg’s now rare publication available in an English translation. Complementing the translation are a critical introduction by Mark A. Meadow and a preface by Bruce Robertson.

An Oak Spring Flora by Lucia Tongiorgi Tomasi Pdf

This is the latest volume in a major series that describes selections of the rare books, manuscripts, and other works of art held at Oak Spring Garden Library, a collection formed by Rachel Lambert Mellon. The 111 items chosen for this volume on floral illustration since the later Middle Ages include Books of Hours, still-life and vanitas paintings, botanical prints, and books of instruction of every kind, from planting a garden to making flowers using colored papers or wax. Lucia Tongiorgi Tomasi groups the works into chapters on such topics as florilegia, women artists, tulipomania, Dutch and Flemish painting, and exotic flowers from distant lands, providing an introduction to each chapter that gives the contextual background necessary for a real understanding and appreciation of floral illustration past and present. The sheer beauty as well as extraordinary skills encountered, for example, in manuscript florilegia by Jacob Marrel and Maria Sibylla Merian, in hand-colored books by Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues and G.B. Ferrari, and in flower studies painted by John Constable, Margaret Mee, and others, are testament to the high status accorded floral illustration over the centuries. This handsome, richly illustrated volume will attract all those with an interest in rare books and the history of art as well as horticulturalists, botanists, and garden historians.
