Indonesian Exports, Peasant Agriculture and the World Economy, 1850-2000 by Hiroyoshi Kanō Pdf

An 'Indonesian economy' first took shape in the latter part of the nineteenth century, consisting of a dominant export industry supported by a rural agrarian sphere. The agricultural sector provided food and labour to the export sector, which was firmly embedded in the world economy. This economic pattern survived several shifts of the leading export industry and persisted even after Indonesia became independent in the mid-20th century. Hiroyoshi Kano uses international trade statistics to analyze three key elements in the Indonesian economy: the balance of international payments and trade, the transformation undergone by leading export industries, and the way in which the agricultural sector supplied land, labour and food. Dividing the 150-year time span covered by the book into four periods based on the prevailing major export industries, he identifies key actors and analyzes long-term changes in agricultural production and rural society, and how they shaped the national economy

Agricultural Growth in Indonesia by Pierre van der Eng Pdf

The impact of both colonial economic policies and Western enterprise on indigenous agriculture in Indonesia has long been a matter of contention among scholars. This book provides the first quantification and assessment of the broad long-term trends in agricultural production and productivity since 1880. It is the first comprehensive inventory of agricultural policies and their impact on agricultural production during the colonial era and after independence. It stresses the continuity in the development of both agricultural productivity and policies from the colonial era until today.

The Economy of Indonesia by Bruce Glassburner Pdf

This book brings together thirteen of the most significant essays on the Indonesian economy. Included are articles by twelve leading authorities on economic policies, agriculture, population and manpower, industry, money, and finance. Many of these widely scattered articles are relatively inaccessible in their original form, and two have not been published previously. While these articles give the historical record of economic performance and policy since Indonesia achieved independence in 1949, they also convey the sectoral and institutional structure of the economic system. An extensive introduction and brief headnotes for each section have been provided by the editor. BRUCE GLASSBURNER, formerly Professor of Economics at the University of California, Davis, received his BS and MS degrees from Iowa State College and his PhD degree from the University of California, Berkeley. He was Chairman, Department of Economics, University of California, Davis for eight years. In 1968-1970, he served as Chairman, Field Staff, University of California Indonesia Project, and was Associate Director, University of California Study Center, Hong Kong, in 1969-1971. He is the author of many published articles in the area of economic development.

Indonesia in a Reforming World Economy by Kym Anderson,Erwidodo,Randy Stringer Pdf

In the mid-1990s a joint research project was established between CASER (Bogor), CIES (Adelaide), CSIS ( Jakarta) and RSPAS (at ANU, Canberra) to examine interactions between agriculture, trade and the environment in Indonesia. Funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR Project No. 9449), the specific objective of the project was to assess the production, consumption, trade, income distributional, regional, environmental, and welfare eff ects in Indonesia of structural and policy changes at home and abroad. Particular attention was to be paid to those structural and policy changes that could aff ect Indonesia's agricultural sector over the next 5-10 years. The implications of national and global economic growth, of regional and multilateral trade liberalisation initiatives, and of Indonesia's ongoing unilateral policy reforms were the initial focus of the study. However, with the onslaught of the financial crisis that began in the latter part of 1997, the project leaders added that issue to the research agenda. Transforming the Indonesian Uplands by Tania Li Pdf

Drawing upon current theoretical debates in social anthropology, development studies and political ecology, and presenting original research from across the Archipelago, this book addresses the changing histories and identities of upland people as they relate in new ways to the natural resource base, to markets and to the state. It is an engaged study, which fills important analytical gaps and addresses real-world concerns, exploring the uplands as components of national and global systems of meaning, power, and production. It offers a significant re-assessment of concepts, processes, histories, relationships and discourses, many of which are not unique to either the uplands or Indonesia, making the book essential and compelling reading for both scholars and practitioners.
