THE RF-101 VOODOO OVER SOUTH EAST ASIA 1961 - 1970 by William Greenhalgh Pdf

Among the first U.S. reconnaissance aircraft in Southeast Asia, the RF-101Cs from PACAF's squadrons spent long periods of temporary duty at Don Muang Airport and Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base in Thailand and at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, South Vietnam, photographing vital objectives in Laos and South Vietnam to provide most of the intelligence used by U.S. and South Vietnamese forces. When the United States finally decided to bomb targets in North Vietnam, RF-101C pilots took the first prestrike and poststrike photographs and led the Air Force and Vietnamese strike aircraft to the targets. The Voodoo pilots photographed objectives all the way to the China border, surviving anti-aircraft fire, missiles, and MiG interceptors - and suffering losses. Truly, the pilots of the RF-101s had a deadly dangerous job, and this history of their achievements pays a much-deserved tribute to their skill and fortitude.

The Air Force in Southeast Asia: The RF-101 Voodoo, 1961-1970 by William H. Greenhalgh Pdf

Declassified study from 1979. From the foreword: "It is impossible to separate an aircraft from its pilots and support personnel since they constitute a team. Nor is it possible to describe that team without considering the organizational and operational developments which affected the team's performance. This volume is a narrative of the birth and growth of the RF-IOIC Voodoo, its entry into the conflict in Southeast ASia, the growth of the reconnaissance force the problems encountered, and the factors which eventually forced its withdrawal from combat."

RF-101 Voodoo Units in Combat by Peter E. Davies Pdf

McDonnell's F-101 Voodoo series was in many ways the most interesting of the 'Century Series' fighter programmes of the 1950s, partly because the type's design and intended mission changed radically during a 40-year career. Originally designed as a fighter-bomber, it was converted to be a reconnaissance aircraft, serving alongside the U-2 and RF-8 Crusaders during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War. Although it gained a reputation as a difficult aircraft to handle, the jet's supersonic speed and newly-developed camera suite enabled it to conduct vital low-altitude photo-reconnaissance missions over heavily-defended target areas. In combat, the RF 101 was usually 'first in-last out' for strike missions. This made it a ready target, with a solo aircraft flying straight and level to gather target photo evidence at low-altitude offering enemy gunners plenty of opportunity to shoot the Voodoo down. This study tells the combat stories of this extraordinary aircraft, highlighting the difficulty of the missions on which it was sent and the courage of its pilots.

USAF, Fac Operations in Southeast Asia, 1961-1965 by Office of Office of Air Force History,U. S. Air U.S. Air Force Pdf

This study is the first of a two-part history of Air Force forward air control operations in Southeast Asia. Part II currently in preparation, will take the story through the years 1965-1970, a period which witnessed many thousands of air control missions flown in support of U.S., South Vietnamese and Allied ground combat units during operations against enemy forces. In this narrative, Major Rowley describes the many problems which faced the first air controllers after their arrival in South Vietnam in early 1962. He discusses their efforts to overcome the language barrier and help train Vietnamese Air Force personnel, their role in establishing a centralized air control system, and the tactics and techniques they developed during the years prior to President Lyndon B. Johnson's decision in 1965 to dispatch large U.S. ground forces to Southeast Asia to help thwart the attempted conquest of South Vietnam by the North Vietnamese. Major Rowley's study is one of a series of historical works currently being written by Air Force historians on air operations in Southeast Asia. His account is based on primary source materials in the Office of Air Force History; the USAF Historical Archives at Maxwell AFB. Ala.; the Air University Library; and the records of the Air Staff and the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force. The author has examined official correspondence- - letters, memoranda, and working papers- -plus a variety of historical studies and reports, including organizational histories. Interviews with forward air controllers and other key personnel-conducted both by the author and other military historians- -also were drawn upon. Transcripts of these are available in the Office of Air Force History or in the collections of the Historical Archives at Maxwell AFB. Ala.

The Air Force in Southeast Asia: Tactics and Techniques of Night Operations 1961-1970 by Victor B. Anthony Pdf

Declassified study from March 1973. From the foreword: "The author, a Master Navigator, was formerly a member of the Air Force Academy history faculty. He also served a tour of duty in the Directorate of Operations, Headquarters, 7/13 Air Force, at Udorn, Thailand, and is well qualified to tell the story of nearly a decade of Air Force night operations in Southeast Asia. During the course of his research, he interviewed over a dozen pilots and crewmen who flew night missions along the Ho Chi Minh Trail and in North Vietnam. They provided him invaluable information on the problems of operating at night and the tactics they devised against an elusive enemy in a hostile, jungle environment. In his history, the author recalls the pioneering efforts of the Farm Gate detachment and the start of night flare operations. He describes the equipment available at the time, modifications that were subsequently made to improve effectiveness, and the successes and failures, that were experienced. He discusses the introduction of new aircraft and avionics, examines the role of the slow as well as the fast movers, and also reviews the operations of the invaluable gunships. His final chapter covers night reconnaissance and Rolling Thunder operations."

Tactical Reconnaissance in the Cold War by Doug Gordon Pdf

The little-known stories of the United States Air Force pilots who flew alone and unarmed into enemy territory in a world under threat of nuclear war. Tactical Reconnaissance in the Cold War describes how the United States Air Force tactical reconnaissance units operated from the end of World War II until the 1970s. This was an immensely active period that also included major conflicts in Korea and Vietnam. It was also a period of rapid technological development in aircraft and photographic techniques. This highly-illustrated book includes chapters on: the post-war period in Europe and the East; the Korean Conflict and the role of the 67th TRW from 1950 to 1954; the role of the highly secret RF-86 missions over Red China and the Soviet Far East in the early to mid ’50s; the RB-57A missions out of Bitburg and Yokota flying clandestinely over the Soviet Union and the RF-100A missions that were flown over the Soviet Union from Turkey, Rhine-Main and Yokota; United States Air Forces in Europe; the Cuban Missile Crisis and the role of the RF-101 Voodoos and RB-66s.

The War in South Vietnam by John Schlight Pdf

Set in the time of greatest intensity during the Southeast Asia war, The War in South Vietnam: The Years of the Offensive, 1965-1968 describes men and machines living and working in an alien environment. In 1965, when the United States first began to take a full-scale combat role in the war in Southeast Asia, the Air Force was called on to provide direct fire support and airlift to the ground forces. Men and planes adapted admirably, ultimately flying more missions, dropping more bombs, and delivering more men and supplies, with a lower loss rate, than in any previous conflict. The aircraft involved in this war ranged from ancient lumbering propeller planes to sleek supersonic jets. While most aircraft flew traditional missions, others found new roles - huge intercontinental nuclear bombers performed close air support and transport aircraft were used as gunships. Because of this war and the way airmen accomplished their tasks, Air Force thinking was modified, and the realization of the need for a response to all levels of conflict set the tone for future Air Force doctrine.Involved with the conflicts in Southeast Asia throughout his 31-year Air Force career, Col. John Schlight, USAF, Retired, flew aircraft in Indochina in support of the French during the early 1950s, was deputy director of the Air Force Project CHECO (Contemporary Historical Evaluation of Combat Operations) in South Vietnam in 1969 and 1970, and head the Vietnam War Section in the Office of Air Force History from 1977 to 1981. With a PhD in history from Princeton University, he has taught military history at the United States Air Force Academy, the National War College, and at universities in the United States and overseas. He is the author of Monarchs and Mercenaries and Henry II Plantagenet and editor of The Second Indochina War. Colonel Schlight's last assignment with the Air Force was Deputy Chief, Office of Air Force History. He is currently Chief of the Southeast Asia Branch at the U. S. Army's Center of Military History in Washington, D. C.

Voodoo Warriors by Nigel Walpole Pdf

The story of the supersonic fighter with “interesting insight into the period of the 1950s and early 1960s, the Cold War and of course the war in Vietnam” (Military Modelling). During the mid–1950s the United States Air Force was given its most powerful single-seat, two-engine fighter to date. The Voodoo would be deployed before the end of that decade in the tactical nuclear bomber and tactical reconnaissance roles worldwide, and in homeland defense with the two-seat, all-weather variant. In December 1957 it took the World Air Speed Record to Mach 1.6—over one and a half times faster than the sound barrier. This book looks at the evolution of the original design and its introduction into service. Chapters cover operations in Korea, Vietnam, the Cuban Crisis and in Europe during the Cold War years. Many first-hand accounts from pilots are included and the author’s own experiences with the aircraft are given with fascinating insight. The Voodoo was an elegant, mean-looking fighting machine that epitomized fast flying in the fifties and sixties. It continues to be a revered airplane. “Definitely a book that gives an in depth look at the Voodoo and the pilots who flew her.”—InScale.org
