The Akan of Ghana by Kofi Ayim Pdf
The Akan of Ghana: Aspects of Past and Present Practices takes the reader through the ancestry of present-day Akan people - from the influence of ancient Egypt, through the ancient Empires of Western Sudan and into the forest belt of present-day Ghana. Comparative analysis of cultural practices (such as kingship and the royal setup, death, funeral rites, and family structures) between ancient Egypt and present-day Akan people are highlighted. The three elements that make up an Akan person - Blood, Soul, and Spirit - as well as the Akan family structure are elaborately treated, and a clear cultural distinction between an Akan family and clan is explained. Names and their appellations, signs and symbols, as well as some kente designs are highlighted in the appendices. Ultimately, cultural challenges of the Akan in the contemporary world are brought to the fore.

The Akans by H. L. Daniel Pdf
Set in the pre-colonial era and enriched with the culture and traditional values of the Akans, the play, a bricolage of drama and storytelling, depicts how the Akan speaking people migrated from Sahara and Sudan, formed the ancient Ghana Empire and wandered through the forest of Kong before settling at Krako, where they established the Kingdom of Bonoman and gained wealth from the gold boom. But after 350 years of living as one people, the Akans were split in two. The separation led to the formation of the Fante and Ashami Kingdoms.

The Akan People by Kwasi Konadu Pdf
The Akans are an ethnic group in West Africa, predominantly Ghana and Togo, of roughly 25 million people. From the twelfth century on, Akans created numerous states based largely on gold mining and trading of cash crops. This brought wealth to numerous Akan states, such as Akwamu, which stretched all the way to modern Benin, and ultimately led to the rise of the best known Akan empire, the Empire of Ashanti. Throughout history, Akans were a highly educated group; notable Akan people in modern times include Kwame Nkrumah and Kofi Annan. This volume features a new array of primary sources that provide fresh and nuanced perspectives. This collection is the first of its kind.

Female Song Tradition and the Akan of Ghana by Kwasi Ampene Pdf
Nnwonkoro is a genre of women's song found among the Akan-speaking peoples of Ghana. It has become a hybrid musical form, incorporating songs and dance movements based on traditional practices alongside others reflecting Christian influence. Nnwonkoro groups perform regularly at funerals, on state occasions, for entertainment, and even in church. In common with other Akan musical traditions, nnwonkoro is transmitted orally and aurally. Based on extensive fieldwork in the Asante and Bono Ahafo regions, and featuring many transcriptions of songs, this book investigates the nature of composition in oral culture, together with issues such as the scope of the poetic imagination and the transformation processes that accompany modernization. This study illuminates the musical style of nnwonkoro in a way which, it is hoped, will facilitate future comparative study of African songs. A CD recording is included.
