The Alexiad by Anna Komnene (Annotated) by Anna Komnene Pdf

The Secret History, written by the sixth-century Byzantine historian Procopius, is one of the most extraordinary and scandalous documents to have survived from the early Byzantine period.Procopius, the leading official historian of his time, lived during the testing and indulgent time of Emperor Justinian the Great and wrote the official records of the successful wars and the grand building projects of his ruler. These were words of aggrandisement. But covertly, Procopius kept a very different record: The Secret History, a vivid, salacious and detailed account of the outrageous behaviour of Justinian and his wife, Theodora, and the equally corrupt, licentious and cruel members of the court and administration of the time. This version of the book is annotated.

The Alexiad (Annotated) by Anna Komnene Pdf

This annotated edition is translated by Elizabeth A.S. Dawes. Anna's description of 11th century CE Byzantium, which covers not only major events but also many physical descriptions and other details such as protocols and clothing, has become an invaluable source for modern historians. Anna was likewise sharp that her work present an objective perspective of events, in spite of the fact that she herself admits the Alexiad is to some degree prejudiced, or possibly an incomplete biography of her father.

Anna Komnene and the Alexiad by Ioulia Kolovou Pdf

“Kolovou . . . rescues Anna from the talons of misogynist historians and places her where she belongs as an extraordinary, but very human, woman.” —Beating Tsundoku A woman of extraordinary education and intellect, Anna Komnene was the only Byzantine female historian and one of the first and foremost historians in medieval Europe. Yet few people know of her and her extraordinary story. Subsequent historians and scholars have skewed the picture of Anna as an intellectual princess and powerful author. She has been largely viewed as an angry, bitter old woman, who greedily wanted a throne that did not belong to her. After being exiled to a convent, she composed the Alexiad, the history of the First Crusade and the Byzantine Emperor, Alexios I Komnenos (1081-1118), her father. This book aims to present Anna Komnene—the fascinating woman, pioneer intellectual, and charismatic author—to the general public. Drawing on the latest academic research to reconstruct Anna’s life, personality and work, it moves away from the myth of Anna the conspirator and “power-hungry woman” which has been unfairly built around her over centuries of misrepresentation. It places Anna Komnene in the context of her own time: the ancient Greek colony and medieval Eastern Roman empire, known as Byzantium, with the magnificent city of Constantinople at its heart. At the forefront of an epic clash between East and West, this was a world renowned for its dazzling wealth, mystery and power games. This was a world with Anna Komnene directly at the center. “Well-written, well-researched, and an overall fascinating read . . . A brilliant addition to women’s history.” —Where There’s Ink There’s Paper

Religion in the Alexiad by Marin Cerchez Pdf

This project calls into question the degree of religiosity in Byzantium. Traditionally it has been held that Byzantines were extremely religious and deeply concerned with Orthodoxy. "Byzantine Orthodoxy" has been regarded by non-Orthodox observers as exceptional and exotic, and by Orthodox adherents as immutable and eternal. Both perspectives have inhibited the understanding of Medieval Roman (Byzantine) religion. This project argues against the use of Orthodoxy as a universal framework of analysis of Byzantine religion. My project is a case study analysis of the Alexiad of Anna Komnene, a principal source of information for eleventh and twelfth century Byzantium. Its objective is to analyze the appearance and use of religious ideas, images, and rhetoric by Anna Komnene in the Alexiad, and to determine their cultural logic both in Anna's text and in the Byzantine society of the twelfth century. The introduction surveys existing research and explains my methodology. Chapter One analyzes the image of the Mother of God in the Alexiad. The use of religious imagery of the Mother of God, nun and Pulcheria aims at rendering harmless all gender-related criticism directed against Alexios and his mother, Anna Dalassene. Chapter Two studies the image of Christ in the Alexiad. I start with the standard paradigm of Christ Pantokrator (Ruler of All) and discover a new form of Christ Suffering. This image helped Anna to counter criticisms directed against military and political failures of her father. Chapter Three focuses on the image of David. The dominant view in scholarship has been that the image of David was of paramount importance for Byzantine emperors. Instead Anna focuses on human agency and the image of Divine Providence. Chapter Four examines the image of the Thirteenth Apostle in the Alexiad. The analysis of the composition of the narrative shows that Anna used the description of heresies and Alexios as a missionary to present him as a spiritual victor and a great emperor. The conclusion surveys the results of my literary analysis of the Alexiad and draws conclusions about their cultural logic in Byzantine religion and religious culture in the twelfth century
