Disease and Diagnosis by William E. Stempsey Pdf
The germs of the ideas in this book became implanted in me during my experience as a resident in clinical pathology at Boston University Medical Center. At the time, I had inklings that the test results churned out by our laboratories were more than scientific facts. As a philosophically unsophisticated young physician, however, I had no language or framework to analyze what I saw as a deep philosophical problem, a problem largely unrecognized by most physicians. The test results provided by our laboratories were accurate and of great practical importance for patient care. However, most of the physicians who relied on our test results to diagnose and treat their patients either did not have the time or interest to consider the philosophical issues inherent in diagnosis, or, like me, had inadequate means to further analyze them. It was more than ten years later that I began doctoral studies in philosophy, and I was fortunate to find a faculty that was supportive of my efforts to address the problem. This book began as my doctoral dissertation in the Department of Philosophy at Georgetown University. I would like to acknowledge the assistance of my mentor, Robert Veatch, Ph. D. Our conversations during my Georgetown years led me in new and often fascinating directions. I would also like to acknowledge the help of Kenneth Schaffner, M. D. , Ph. D.

The Amateur's Vademecum by E. B. Reilley Pdf
Reilley's work is a typical example of dance manuals published during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Whereas previous manuals often had many pages devoted to etiquette and deportment, Reilley devotes but two paragraphs, noting that he was leaving the rest to the "good sense and nature" of his readers. The manual provides an extensive history of dance from the Greeks and Romans to the courts of Italy and France to the dances of aboriginal American Indians. Demonstrating the century's growing interest in physical education, Reilley provides a detailed section on exercise. The manual gives descriptions of the popular ballroom dances of the era--quadrilles, waltz, schottisch, and polka.

Soccer in Brazil by Martin Curi Pdf
No other national stereotype in the world is so closely tied with a sport, as Brazil is with football. The five-time world champions have constructed their national identity around this sport. Perhaps for this reason it’s no wonder that there are many Brazilian social scientists doing research on this theme. The first part of this volume is dedicated to the history of Brazilian football. The main question is how did football become so popular in the country? It also looks at other interesting historical developments in Brazilian football history up to this day. The second part considers current phenomena, especially the place of Brazilian football in a globalized world: What are the consequences of an extremely commercialized and mediatized sport on a developing country? How does Brazil figure as the main supplying country of football talents? How does the population feel about seeing their players in Europe instead of their own country? Finally, the book will conclude with a critique of a documentary film about a Brazilian national team game in Haiti which was part of the Brazilian army’s blue helmet mission. The game was used as a political instrument, revealing the importance of this sport in attaining a political position for Brazil in the world. This book was previously published as a special issue of Soccer and Society.

Faces Inside and Outside the Clinic by Dr Tony McHugh Pdf
Drawing on studies of surface topography, image editing, and diagnostic and surgical experience, Faces Inside and Outside the Clinic addresses the notion of ‘truth’ in what are considered to be ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ faces, whether in clinical cosmetic procedures or in specific sociocultural contexts outside the clinic. With attention to the manner in which the human face - and often the individual herself or himself as a consequence - is physically defined, conceptually judged, numerically measured and clinically analysed, this book reveals that on closer inspection, supposedly objective and evidential ‘truths’ are in fact subjective and prescriptive. Adopting a Foucauldian analysis of the ways in which ‘normalising technologies’ and ‘techniques’ ultimately preserve and expand upon an increasing array of ‘abnormal’ facial configurations, Faces Inside and Outside the Clinic shows that when determining ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ faces, what happens inside the clinic is inextricably linked to what happens outside the clinic - and vice versa. As such, it will be of interest to scholars and students of social, cultural and political theory, contemporary philosophy and the social scientific study of science, health and technology.
