It appeared to him that the efforts that have been, and are still being, made by the Society are so laudable that, when the facts become fully known in this country, Englishmen would not be found wanting to join in the important work.vi the amazon provinces or peru. Notwithstanding the many favourable reports made by the English scientific travellers, Clements R. Markham, J. B. Minchin, Simpson, Bates, and others, who have from time to time visited these regions and reported on their great natural resources, it seems incredible that their noble efforts, made for the benefit of the people of Europe, should have as yet borne no fruit; and that this immense territory, so fertile and abounding in the richest mercantile products, which would be of such great value to European industry in general and that of England in particular, should still remain ignored by commercial enterprise.
