The American Journal of Sociology, Vol. 9 by Albion W. Small Pdf

Excerpt from The American Journal of Sociology, Vol. 9: Bi-Monthly; July, 1903-May, 1904 The subsidy paid by the counties to industrial schools under this act is condemned by certain authorities, (1) because the tendency of subsidized institutions is more and more to lean on the state, and this causes patrons to give less liberally toward their support, and (2) the tendency of such subsidies is to tempt the favored institutions to keep youths year after year for the revenue it brings from the government. Furthermore, where the state supports it ought to control, in order that a detailed account of the expenditures of funds may be obtained; but this is not true of the schools organized under this act. The Religious Roots of American Sociology by Cecil E. Greek Pdf

This book, first published in 1992, demonstrates that American sociology has deep religious roots which continue, both directly and indirectly, to influence the discipline today. Early American sociology was closely aligned with the social gospel movement in Protestantism, which hope to make use of the new science of sociology to help solve social problems and, ultimately, prepare America for the establishment of Christ’s kingdom on earth. Although American sociology became secularized after 1920, it retained its ameliorative outlook, hoping to ‘save’ mankind through positivistic analysis and technocratic societal planning.

The Philosophy of Money by Georg Simmel Pdf

'I have lost interest ...in all that I have written prior to The Philosophy of Money . This one is really my book, the others appear to me colourless and seem as if they could have been written by anyone else.' - Georg Simmel to Heinrich Rickert (1904) In The Philosophy of Money , Simmel provides us with a remarkably wide-ranging discussion of the social, psychological and philosophical aspects of the money economy, full of brilliant insights into the forms that social relationships take. He analyzes the relationships of money to exchange, the human personality, the position of women, individual freedom and many other areas of human existence. Later he provides us with an account of the consequences of the modern money economy and the division of labour, which examines the processes of alienation and reification in work, urban life and elsewhere. Perhaps, more than any of his other sociological works, The Philosophy of Money gives us an example of his comprehensive analysis of the interrelationships between the most diverse and seemingly connected social phenomena. This revised edition of the translation by Tom Bottomore and David Frisby, includes a new Preface by Davi
