The American Roadside in Émigré Literature, Film, and Photography: 1955–1985 traces the origin of a postmodern iconography of mobile consumption equating roadside America with an authentic experience of the United States through the postwar road narrative, a narrative which, Elsa Court argues, has been shaped by and through white male émigré narratives of the American road, in both literature and visual culture. While stressing that these narratives are limited in their understanding of the processes of exclusion and unequal flux in experiences of modern automobility, the book works through four case studies in the American works of European-born authors Vladimir Nabokov, Robert Frank, Alfred Hitchcock, and Wim Wenders to unveil an early phenomenology of the postwar American highway, one that anticipates the works of late-twentieth-century spatial theorists Jean Baudrillard, Michel Foucault, and Marc Augé and sketches a postmodern aesthetic of western mobility and consumption that has become synonymous with contemporary America.

Until now, celebrated photographer Robert Frank’s daring and unconventional work as a filmmaker has not been awarded the critical notice it deserves. In this timely volume, George Kouvaros surveys Frank’s films and videos and places them in the larger context of experimentation in American art and literature since World War II. Born in 1924, Frank emigrated from Switzerland to the United States in 1947 and quickly made his mark as a photojournalist. A 1955 Guggenheim Foundation fellowship allowed him to travel across the country, photographing aspects of American life that had previously received little attention. The resulting book, The Americans, with an Introduction by Jack Kerouac, is generally considered a landmark in the history of postwar photography. During the same period, Frank befriended other artists and writers, among them Allen Ginsberg, Peter Orlovsky, and Gregory Corso, all of whom are featured in his first film, Pull My Daisy, which is narrated by Kerouac. This film set the terms for a new era of experimental filmmaking. By examining Frank’s films and videos, including Pull My Daisy, Me and My Brother, and Cocksucker Blues, in the framework of his more widely recognized photographic achievements, Kouvaros develops a model of cross-media history in which photography, film, and video are complicit in the search for fresh forms of visual expression. Awakening the Eye is an insightful, compelling, and, at times, moving account of Frank’s determination to forge a personal connection between the circumstances of his life and the media in which he works.
Photography of and on the road functions as its own distinct genre in its application of narrative, its reliance on speed with regards to both the photographic equipment and the mode of transportation, and in many ways, the newness of the place being photographed. This dissertation seeks to address gaps found in the study of road imagery through the work of three post-war road photographers. For Berenice Abbott, Robert Frank, and William Christenberry, the road serves as a site for them to reconceive both the nation they picture and the ideas of space, community, and identity within it. They play on the overlap between film and photography and circumvent assumptions involving road culture, including the ways in which race and gender are represented. In their work I find that the conventionally idyllic symbol of adventure and the frontier gives way to a remarkable artistic portrait of the changing racial, socioeconomic, aesthetic, and increasingly global cultural landscape of America. The first chapter looks at Berenice Abbott's 1954 U.S. 1 series, as well as some of her earlier road series, in order to frame an examination of the role of women within road narratives as well as an exploration of Abbott's own experience of the first American highway. The second chapter focuses on Robert Frank's 1968 feature-length film Me and My Brother as an experiment in manipulating the Hollywood road genre to ponder different representations of identity and reality. The third chapter on William Christenberry's snapshots in and around Hale County, Alabama from the 1960s through the 1990s analyzes the experience of temporality in vernacular architecture along the roadside. Together, all three artists work to broaden the genre of road photography and bring in people, places, and styles that had otherwise been left to the margins.

Literature departments are staffed by, and tend to be focused on turning out, “good” readers—attentive to nuance, aware of history, interested in literary texts as self-contained works. But the vast majority of readers are, to use Merve Emre’s tongue-in-cheek term, “bad” readers. They read fiction and poetry to be moved, distracted, instructed, improved, engaged as citizens. How should we think about those readers, and what should we make of the structures, well outside the academy, that generate them? We should, Emre argues, think of such readers not as non-literary but as paraliterary—thriving outside the institutions we take as central to the literary world. She traces this phenomenon to the postwar period, when literature played a key role in the rise of American power. At the same time as American universities were producing good readers by the hundreds, many more thousands of bad readers were learning elsewhere to be disciplined public communicators, whether in diplomatic and ambassadorial missions, private and public cultural exchange programs, multinational corporations, or global activist groups.
