The Slang Dictionary by John Camden Hotten Pdf

Excerpt from The Slang Dictionary: Etymological, Historical, and Anecdotal Have elapsed since this Dictionary was first introduced to the public, alterations have since then been many and frequent in the subject of which it treats. The first issue of a work of this kind is, too, ever beset with difficulties, and the compiler was always aware that, though under the circumstances of its production the book was an undoubted success, it necessarily lacked many of the elements which would make that success lasting, and cause the Slang Dictionary to be regarded as an authority and a work of reference not merely among the uneducated, but among people of cultivated tastes and inquiring minds. For though the vulgar use of the lies to those words only which are used by 5 classes and the lowest grades of society, the term has in reality, and should have-as every one who has ever studied the subject knows it much wider significance. Bearing this in mind, the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Slang Dictionary, Or the Vulgar Words, Street Phrases, and "Fast" Expressions of High and Low Society by John Camden Hotten Pdf

Excerpt from The Slang Dictionary, or the Vulgar Words, Street Phrases, and "Fast" Expressions of High and Low Society: Many With Their Etymology, and a Few With Their History Traced The reader will please bear in mind that this is a Dic tionary of modern Slang, - a list of colloquial words and phrases in present use, - whether of ancient or modern formation. Whenever Ancient or Ancient English is ap pended to a Slang or Cant word, it is meant to signify that the expression was in respectable use in or previous to the reign of Queen Elizabeth. Ancient Cant indicates that the term was used as a Cant word in or previous to the same reign. Old or Old English, affixed to a vulgar word, signifies that it was in general use as a proper expression in or previous to the reign of Charles II. Old Cant indicates that the term was in use as a Cant word during or before the same reign. Obsolete Slang terms are not given; no notice, therefore, has been taken of the numerous expressions that occur in the play-books and other popular literature of the past three hundred years, which have served their day, and now form no part of our tongue. Only the living language of the time has been dealt with. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The United States, when it borrowed the language of the Mother Country, adopted also many of its colloquialisms and many more of its provincialisms. Ours is the tongue that Shakespeare spoke, and our inheritance includes much of the heterodox philology of our British cousins. Especially with respect to sporting and theatrical slang, and to the language common to the thief and the thief catcher and known as "Thieves' patter," the majority of words, and phrases are as often used in one country as in the other.

Cassell's Dictionary of Slang by Jonathon Green Pdf

With its unparalleled coverage of English slang of all types (from 18th-century cant to contemporary gay slang), and its uncluttered editorial apparatus, Cassell's Dictionary of Slang was warmly received when its first edition appeared in 1998. 'Brilliant.' said Mark Lawson on BBC2's The Late Review; 'This is a terrific piece of work - learned, entertaining, funny, stimulating' said Jonathan Meades in The Evening Standard. But now the world's best single-volume dictionary of English slang is about to get even better. Jonathon Green has spent the last seven years on a vast project: to research in depth the English slang vocabulary and to hunt down and record written instances of the use of as many slang words as possible. This has entailed trawling through more than 4000 books - plus song lyrics, TV and movie scripts, and many newspapers and magazines - for relevant material. The research has thrown up some fascinating results

The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Current English (Classic Reprint) by Henry Watson Fowler Pdf

Excerpt from The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Current English Again, of the many thousands of old or new scientific and technical terms that have a limited currency some are carried by accident into the main stream of the language and become known temporarily or permanently, vaguely or precisely, to all ordinarily well-informed members of the modern newspaper-reading public. For the purposes of a dictionary that is not to be bulky and yet is to give a fuller treatment than is usual in dictionaries of its size to the undoubtedly current words forming the staple of the language, selection among these intruders is a difficult but very necessary task. The most that can be hoped for is that every one conversant with any special vocabulary may consider us, though sadly deficient on his subject, fairly copious on others the meaning cf many learned words that have been omitted as having no pretence to general currency may easily be gathered by reference first to the stem, which is often the subject of an article, or to another word of which the stem is clearly the same, and secondly to the suffix. In another class of words and senses the test of currency has led us to diverge in the opposite direction from the practice usual in dictionaries of this size if we give fewer scientific and technical terms, we admit colloquial, facetious, slang, and vulgar expressions with freedom, merely attaching a cautionary label when a well established usage of this kind is omitted, it is not because we consider it beneath the dignity of lexicography to record it, but because, not being recorded in the dictionaries from which our word-list is necessarily compiled, it has escaped our notice we have not, however, consulted slang dictionaries nor made any attempt at completeness in this respect. Dictionary of Americanisms by John Russell Bartlett Pdf

Excerpt from Dictionary of Americanisms: A Glossary of Words and Phrases Usually Regarded as Peculiar the United States The first edition of this Dictionary was published in New York in 1848. It met with a quick sale, and soon passed out of print. Aware of its many imperfections, I began my preparations for a new edition before it had fully left the press. From that time to the day the last sheets of this edition left my hands for the printer, now ten years, I have been more or less occupied in its preparation. Nearly three years of this period I spent in the interior of the country, in the service of the United States as Commissioner on the Mexican Boundary; but even there, I failed not to note the peculiarities of the familiar language of the frontier, and carefully recorded the words and phrases I met with for future use. This experience enabled me to collect the singular words occurring in prairie and frontier life as well as those com mon to Texas, New Mexico, and California. Most of these have come from the Spanish, and are now fairly engrafted on our language. The other alterations and improvements made in this edition, consist in the addition of a very large number Of words and phrases peculiar to the United States; so that it now contains probably twice as many as the first edition. The examples or illustrations from authors, showing the use of words, have also been greatly multiplied. This seemed desirable, as exam ples convey a far more correct idea of their meaning and use than a simple definition. The. Histories of words and their definitions have also been corrected and improved. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office (Classic Reprint) by A. G. Walpole Sayer Pdf

Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices. A New Dictionary of Americanisms by Sylva Clapin Pdf

Excerpt from A New Dictionary of Americanisms: Being a Glossary of Words Supposed to Be Peculiar to the United States and the Dominion of Canada A very dull man, and a pertinacious reader - the terms are by no means incompatible - is said to have had Johnson's Dictionary lent to him by some mischievous friend as an interesting new work, and to have read it through from beginning to end, quite unconscious that he was doing anything unusual. He observed, when he returned it, that the author appeared to him a person of considerable information, but that his style was slightly unconnected. The remark had a good deal of truth in it, for a dictionary is not bad reading on the whole. It is much more endurable than a good many of what are called lighter books, and not much more unconnected. What is an Americanism? In a good many instances the name is given to some archaism belated, or some English provincialism that has worked its way into general acceptance in the United States. It is usual to object, when expressions of either kind are classed by. some one as Americanisms, that they are nothing of the kind, which, though in strictness true enough, is a little unpractical; for surely, when words that have become obsolete in the mother country, or are merely "local" here and there, find themselves in wide or universal popularity in America, it is indeed convenient to class them as what they have practically become - Americanisms. Such words, for instance, as shyster, meeching, etc., are for all practical purposes Americanisms now, and are best classed and defined therewith. If we reject them, we must reject also such characteristic words as boss, stoop, portage, etc. Carry it far enough, and we would have hardly anything left but neologisms.
