The Apostolic Fathers in English by Michael W. Holmes Pdf

The Apostolic Fathers is an important collection of writings revered by early Christians but not included in the final canon of the New Testament. Here a leading expert on these texts offers an authoritative contemporary translation, in the tradition of the magisterial Lightfoot version but thoroughly up-to-date. The third edition features numerous changes, including carefully revised translations and a new, more user-friendly design. The introduction, notes, and bibliographies have been freshly revised as well.

The Apostolic Fathers, Vol. 1 of 2: With an English Translation; I Clement; II Clement; Ignatius; Polycarp; Didache; Barnabas (Classic Reprint) by Kirsopp Lake Pdf

Excerpt from The Apostolic Fathers, Vol. 1 of 2: With an English Translation; I Clement; II Clement; Ignatius; Polycarp; Didache; Barnabas The name of Apostolic Fathers is so firmly established by usage that it will certainly never be abandoned; but it is not altogether a satisfactory title for the collection of writings to which it is given. It means that the writers in question may be supposed to have had personal knowledge of some of the Apostles, but not actually to have belonged to their number. Thus, for. Instance, Clement and Hermes are reckoned as disciples of St. Paul, and Polycarp as a disciple of St. John. It is not, however, always possible to maintain this view Barnabas, to whom one of these writings is ascribed, was not merely a disciple of the Apostles, but belonged to their actual number, and the Didache claims in its title to belong to the circle of the Twelve. It should also be noted that the title does not represent any ancient tradition: there are no traces of any early collection of Apostolic Fathers, and each of them has a separate literary history. The Apostolic Fathers by Apostolic Fathers Pdf

Now with a new foreword by Mark Galli. A collection of the earliest known writings of the church, The Apostolic Fathers includes a sermon and six brief documents: the First and Second Epistles of Clement, the Didache, the Epistles of Ignatius, the Epistle of Polycarp, the Epistle about Polycarp's Martyrdom, and the Shepherd of Hermas. "There are two ways, one of life and one of death," begins the Didache, "and between the two ways there is a great difference." Followers of the way of life today will find much encouragement of those who first embarked on the path two millennia ago. The John Lightfoot (1602-1675) translation was the source used for this edition of Apostolic Fathers.

The Christian Fathers (Classic Reprint) by Georg Gresley Perry Pdf

Excerpt from The Christian Fathers Are not forgotten by Him whom they loved even to the death. Among the more distinguished Christian martyrs, the accounts of whom have happily been preserved for us, one of the earliest and most illustrious was Ignatius, Bishop of Antioch. Te have only to turn to the Acts of the Apostles to see how important a place in the early history of Christianity the great city of Antioch was. Large numbers of Christians were found there in the very first days of the Gospel.* It was here that the name of Christians T was first given to the disciples of Jesus, and the great Apostle Paul made this, the capital of Syria, his head-quarters for several years; while from thence he, with his fellow-labourers, spread the word of God through Asia Minor and Greece. The labours of St. Paul were specially addressed to the Gentiles at Antioch, but St. Peter, whose work lay principally among the J ews, also visited Antioch, and made a large number of con verts there. Ignatius, of whom we come now to speak, was well known to both these Apostles. We are told by Chrysostom that he was nursed up by the Apostles, and made partaker both of their familiar discourses and of their more secret. Early Christian Writings by Anonim Pdf

The writings in this volume cast a glimmer of light upon the emerging traditions and organization of the infant church, during an otherwise little-known period of its development. A selection of letters and small-scale theological treatises from a group known as the Apostolic Fathers, several of whom were probably disciples of the Apostles, they provide a first-hand account of the early Church and outline a form of early Christianity still drawing on the theology and traditions of its parent religion, Judaism. Included here are the first Epistle of Bishop Clement of Rome, an impassioned plea for harmony; The Epistle of Polycarp; The Epistle of Barnabas; The Didache; and the Seven Epistles written by Ignatius of Antioch - among them his moving appeal to the Romans that they grant him a martyr's death.

A History of Preaching by Edwin Charles Dargan Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Preaching: From the Apostolic Fathers to the Great Reformers, A. D. 70-1572 The remarkable lack Of treatises on the History of Preaching, especially in English, early impressed me, and aroused a desire to do something, however little, towards supplying the need. The difficulty of the task and the pressure of other and heavy burdens have occasioned many misgivings and delays, and there have been Of necessity changes of plan in the execution of the work. As now planned the present volume is the first Of three proposed books. It deals with the history up to and including the Reformation, the next will treat of Modern European preaching, and the last will present a History Of Preaching in the United States. Some material is in hand for these later works, and should this one be fort unate enough to find a public, and should life and leisure be granted me, I hope in time to produce them. For the completion of the present volume Opportunity was kindly afforded by the Trustees of the Seminary in granting me leave of absence for some months to Visit Europe. While abroad from June, 1902, to January, 1903, I had time not only to write up much material already gathered, but to visit some of the places made famous in the history Of the pulpit, and to read somewhat in a number of the great libraries, including those at Berlin. He shows an unmistakable acquaintance with the phraseology of the Epistle, echoes of which appear everywhere in his Epistle to the Philippians.
