Architecture in the Indian Subcontinent by Christopher Tadgell Pdf
Dedicated to the tracing of continuity across sectarian divides, Christopher Tadgell’s History of Architecture in India (1989) was the first modern monograph to draw together in one volume all the strands of India’s pre-colonial architectural history – from the Vedic and Native traditions of early India, through Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic and secular architecture. This comprehensive revision, Architecture in the Indian Subcontinent: From the Mauryas to the Mughals, expands the structure to acknowledge the great advance in scholarship across this extremely complex subject over the last three decades. An understanding of Indian history and religion is the basis for understanding the complex pattern of relationships in the evolution of architecture in the subcontinent. Therefore, background material covers major invasions, migrations, dynastic conflicts and cultural and commercial connections, the main religious developments and their significance and repercussions, and external architectural precedents. While avoiding the usual division of the subject into ‘Buddhist and Hindu’ and ‘Islamic’ parts in order to trace continuity, the importance of religion, symbolism and myth to the development of characteristic Indian architectural forms in all their richness and complexity is fully explained in this fully illustrated account of the subcontinent’s architecture.

Persian Influence on Art, Architecture, Philosophy and Culture of Indian Subcontinent by Dr Anu Dhawan Pdf
Indo-Iranian cultural relations are a continuous historical process starting from the gray dawn of the common united life of the ancestors of these twoi great Asian civilizations as part and parcel of the original Indo-European stock. The process has unfolded itself in history through alternate phases of harmony and conflict and has percolated down to our times. The ancestors of Iranian and Indian Aryans of history are believed to have lived in a common habitat in Central Asia as an undivided ethnic group from the fourth millenium to that of the third millenium B.C. They shared a common life-experience and were inextricably linked-up on the cultural level in spite of their numerous internal differences and conflicts. From this common habitat the inhabitants migrated in two branches towards the west and the cast between circa 4000 and 3000 B.C. Those who moved towards the east entered Iran and India where they were to develop their distinctive civilizations througout the succeeding ages. The undivided Indo-Iranians aer believed to have lived for abot a millenium (circa 4000-3000 B.C.) In this period they lived a common life and developed a specific Indo-Iranian civilization, culture and religion which we can partially reconstruct by a comparative study of the Veda and the Zend Avesta. There are amazing similarities in their language, culture and religion which strike us as little short of identity. From time immemorial the Orient has been the cradle of civilization; that amongst all other Oriental countries Iran and India stand first and foremost in their contribution to world culture and that these two nations were the torch bearers of knowledge, the forerunners of a fine civilization at a time when the civilized countries of the modern world were still plunged in dim obscurity of ignorance countries of modern world were still plunged in dim obscurity of ignorance. Linguistic affirnities, national kinship and distinctive racial characteristics constitute the inseparable bonds of friendship and fellowship that have brought the two nations together from the earliest times throughout the course of history. These two countries have been tied together by strong and lasting bonds, and, both in ancient times and during the medieval era, their cultures have profited mutually by a continual exchange of knowledge and ideas. These lasting ties prompted Jawaharal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India, to write in his famous book "Discovery of India". Dr Anu Dhawan

Water Architecture in South Asia by Julia Hegewald Pdf
Water architecture in South Asia represents some of the most beautiful and spectacular building achievements of the region. This study provides a holistic approach to the subject, suggesting common links and regional contrasts between types of water structures and their contexts, with a comprehensive interpretation of the history and meaning of water architecture in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Five types of water structures are identified. Their development is traced from simple to more complex forms, considering how these accommodate secular and religious functions, and present expressions of sacred and royal authority. This publication is the first reference work on the subject. Many of the structures discussed and illustrated here have never been published before. Its comprehensive approach will have a wide relevance for other South Asian disciplines.

This volume showcases some 54 important mosques spread across the Indian subcontinent-from Lahore in modern Pakistan to Gaur in modern West Bengal and from Delhi in the north to Kayalpatnam and Bijapur in South India. It mentions the location of the mosques, their history, structure and plan patterns and discusses various elements of the structures in detail: their entrances, pillars, porticoes, type of mihrab and other aspects. It emphasizes the importance of a particular masjid such as its typifying the mosques of a certain period or dynasty and setting the standard for later masjids in some manner. It presents some other plans and proportional elevations in the appendices for a comparative study. An extremely useful list of Muslim rulers of the Indian subcontinent is provided. With maps and drawings of plans of mosques, the book is a painstaking effort to examine the evolution and iconography of the mosque architecture in the region. The volume will be indispensable for scholars and students of Indo-Islamic architecture.

Women in India by Sita Anantha Raman Pdf
Are Indian women powerful mother goddesses, or domestic handmaidens trailing behind men in literacy, wages, opportunities, and rights? Have they been agents of their own destinies, or voiceless victims of patriarchy? Behind these colorful over-simplifications lies the reality of many feminine personas belonging to various classes, ethnicities, religions, and castes. This two-volume set looks at Indian history from ancient to modern times, revealing precisely why ideas of gender rights were not static across eras or regions. Raman's work is a reflection on the various ways in which women in a non-Western culture have developed and expressed their own feminist agenda. Are Indian women powerful mother goddesses, or domestic handmaidens trailing behind men in literacy, wages, opportunities, and rights? Have they been agents of their own destinies, or voiceless victims of patriarchy? Behind these coloful over-simplifications lies the reality of many feminine personas belonging to various classes, ethnicities, religions, and castes. This two-volume set looks at Indian history from ancient to modern times, revealing precisely why ideas of gender rights were not static across eras or regions. Raman's work is a reflection on the various ways in which women in a non-western culture have developed and expressed their own feminist agenda. Individual chapters highlight the enduring legacies of many important male and female figures, illustrating how each played a key role in modifying the substance of women's lives. Political movements are examined as well, such as the nationalist reform movement of 1947 in which the ideal of Indian womanhood became central to the nation and the push for independence. Also included is a survey of women in contemporary India and the role they played in the resurgence of militant Hindu nationalism. Aside from being an engaging and readable narrative of Indian history, this set integrates women's issues, roles, and achievements into the general study of the times, providing a clear presentation of the social, cultural, religious, political, and economic realities that have helped shape the identity of Indian women.
