The History of the Violin by William Sandys Pdf

Excerpt from The History of the Violin: And Other Instruments Played on With the Bow From the Remotest Times to the Present, Also, an Account of the Principal Makers, English and Foreign, With Numerous Illustrations Having for many years past been in the habit of making collections respecting (among many other things) violins and instruments played on with the bow, we have ventured to lay the result of our labours before such portion of society as may feel an interest in the subject; and, as the taste for music has of late years so much increased, we may hope this may not be a small portion. Our work should strictly have been called, "Collections towards the History of the Violin," as we ourselves have not only been obliged to omit many things connected with this history, to avoid making the book too bulky and too expensive, but are fully aware that there must be many facts connected with it with which we have not been fortunate enough to meet. We may observe here, that what we have omitted, would only have been additional illustrations, or evidences in support of what we have already stated in the work, and we should be well pleased if any one competent to the task, and with better opportunity and leisure than we have had, would undertake the History in a more enlarged and important shape. Echoes From The Past by Glenn Wood Pdf

Readers may also appreciate an earlier work by the same author devoted to 'The Art & History of Violin Cases'. Like the boxes described in Messengers in Time and Echoes from the Past, violin cases have been traditionally made of wood, have a public exterior and a more private interior and are designed to house precious objects. The Art & History of Violin Cases follows the development of violin cases from the 17th century through to the present and even includes examples made by the greatest of all violin makers, Antonio Stradivari.

Researches Into the Early History of the Violin Family (Classic Reprint) by Carl Engel Pdf

Excerpt from Researches Into the Early History of the Violin Family The author of this book has gone to his rest before the last revision of it. How little had been left for consideration or change is shown in that I have added only four footnotes to the text. For that text, its deep learning, ingenious research and happy illustration, no one can be more grateful than myself. I call attention especially to the interesting chain of reasoning which derives the Mediaeval Rotte from the old Greek Lyre. But that is only a single instance of many in this admirable essay, of practical discernment in remote ways where we have but faint light to guide us. Respect for Carl Engel and his life's work will last as long as there exists any desire to know, and disposition to assimilate, those musical facts, historical or ethnological, which lie outside our every-day experience. The Violin: A Social History of the World's Most Versatile Instrument by David Schoenbaum Pdf

The life, times, and travels of a remarkable instrument and the people who have made, sold, played, and cherished it. A 16-ounce package of polished wood, strings, and air, the violin is perhaps the most affordable, portable, and adaptable instrument ever created. As congenial to reels, ragas, Delta blues, and indie rock as it is to solo Bach and late Beethoven, it has been played standing or sitting, alone or in groups, in bars, churches, concert halls, lumber camps, even concentration camps, by pros and amateurs, adults and children, men and women, at virtually any latitude on any continent. Despite dogged attempts by musicologists worldwide to find its source, the violin’s origins remain maddeningly elusive. The instrument surfaced from nowhere in particular, in a world that Columbus had only recently left behind and Shakespeare had yet to put on paper. By the end of the violin’s first century, people were just discovering its possibilities. But it was already the instrument of choice for some of the greatest music ever composed by the end of its second. By the dawn of its fifth, it was established on five continents as an icon of globalization, modernization, and social mobility, an A-list trophy, and a potential capital gain. In The Violin, David Schoenbaum has combined the stories of its makers, dealers, and players into a global history of the past five centuries. From the earliest days, when violin makers acquired their craft from box makers, to Stradivari and the Golden Age of Cremona; Vuillaume and the Hills, who turned it into a global collectible; and incomparable performers from Paganini and Joachim to Heifetz and Oistrakh, Schoenbaum lays out the business, politics, and art of the world’s most versatile instrument.

The Heart of Music by Anna Alice Chapin Pdf

Excerpt from The Heart of Music: The Story of the Violin "Into the town will I, my frendes to vysit there, And hither straight again to see th' end of this yere; In the meantime, fellowes, pype up your fiddles, I say, take them, And let your frendes here have such mirth as ye can make them. T. Colwell, 1575. Of necessity a history of the violin must be a history, first and foremost, of everything except the violin. The violin has no history. When Stradivari made the Perfect Fiddle its history was begun and ended in one breath. One could write elaborate stories of Paganini's "Cannon" and "Sarasati's "Boissier," but this would be a history of violins and violinists, not of the violin. The writer, in deep love of the greatest of all instruments and a desire to trace its origin to its most remote sources, has found herself traversing very circuitous paths, and consorting with a mixed company of instruments, - all ancestors of the fiddle, undoubtedly, but bearing little more than a family resemblance to the beautiful thing the evolution of which she had begun to investigate.
