The Art of Colour and the Human Form by Gerard Wagner,Rudolf Steiner Pdf

"The human being is the most exalted, indeed the true subject of visual art." -- J. W. Goethe, Propylaea "...when we speak of visual art...it is above all a matter of understanding how everything in the visual arts ultimately aims at, proceeds from, and creates out of the human form. -- Rudolf Steiner, Becoming Fully Human, p. 43 "The actual underlying problem in painting in our time can be designated as 'depicting the spirit form of the human being out of the color.'" -- Maria Strakosch-Giesler, Die erlöste Sphinx, 1955 Based on Rudolf Steiner's indications, Gerard Wagner shows a wholly new approach to the human form in art. The Art of Colour and the Human Form presents the seven motif sketches concerned with the "spirit form of the human being," as well as numerous studies that Gerard Wagner painted over a period of thirty years. The intention of this volume is to present an artistic approach to these unique motifs and to indicate their potential "color build-up." The Art of Colour and the Human Form contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of this new direction in art.

A Life with Colour by Caroline Chanter Pdf

A Life with Colour is the first complete survey of Gerard Wagner’s biography and his artistic intentions, featuring dozens of illustrations and more than 120 colour plates. The life and work of Gerard Wagner (1906-1999) were closely aligned to the artistic-spiritual stream connected with the Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland. He first heard of the Goetheanum – and of its destruction by fire at New Year 1922/23 – whilst still a youth. In 1926, he made his first visit to Dornach, but his intended stay of a week turned into a lifelong sojourn of over 73 years. He found there an active, striving community with which he felt intimately connected. From the start, Gerard Wagner immersed himself in the various artistic impulses that Rudolf Steiner had instigated. This, together with an intensive study of anthroposophy, formed the basis upon which he forged his own approach to painting. The many years he spent in colour experimentation led him to discover objective principles within the language of colour and form that are an inspiration to many today. His paintings, first shown at the Goetheanum in the early 1940s, were exhibited internationally, most notably at the Menshikov Palace, Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg, Russia, in 1997. ‘[Wagner’s] whole being bowed before the mystery of colour in a loving, joyful yet serious way, full of devotion and dignity. His life and work itself became a living metaphor of the creative power of colour.’ – Christian Hitsch ‘ Caroline Chanter has not only accomplished a great and seminal study that illuminates the life and work of Gerard Wagner, but has done a great service also to the Goetheanum and its School of Spiritual Science.’ – Peter Selg ‘[Gerard Wagner was] a soul which on earth was devoted so selflessly and in such purity to the beings that are revealed… in forms and colours. He helped them to utterance and manifestation in this world of ours.’ – Sergei O. Prokofieff

Like Life by Luke Syson,Sheena Wagstaff,Emerson Bowyer,Brinda Kumar Pdf

Since before the myth of Pygmalion bringing a statue to life through desire, artists have used sculpture to explore the physical materiality of the body. This groundbreaking volume examines key sculptural works from thirteenth-century Europe to the global present, revealing new insights into the strategies artists deploy to blur the distinction between art and life. Three-dimensional renderings of the human figure are presented here in numerous manifestations, created by artists ranging from Donatello and Edgar Degas to Kiki Smith and Jeff Koons. Featuring works created in media both traditional and unexpected—such as glass, leather, and blood—Like Life presents sculpture by turns conventional and shocking, including effigies, dolls, mannequins, automata, waxworks, and anatomical models. Texts by curators and cultural historians as well as contemporary artists complete this provocative exploration of realistic representations of the human body. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana}

An Artistic Treatise on the Human Figure by Henry Warren Pdf

Excerpt from An Artistic Treatise on the Human Figure: Containing Hints on Proportion, Color, and Composition When Le Brun painted his famous Battles of Alexander the Great, the combatants were not Greeks, not Asiatics, not Egyptians; they were warriors - men. There was a difference, it was true, between a white and a black man, but that was all. The black might be a negro, or a carib, or an American Indian, for aught the painter cared. The Objective Eye by John Hyman Pdf

“The longer you work, the more the mystery deepens of what appearance is, or how what is called appearance can be made in another medium."—Francis Bacon, painter This, in a nutshell, is the central problem in the theory of art. It has fascinated philosophers from Plato to Wittgenstein. And it fascinates artists and art historians, who have always drawn extensively on philosophical ideas about language and representation, and on ideas about vision and the visible world that have deep philosophical roots. John Hyman’s The Objective Eye is a radical treatment of this problem, deeply informed by the history of philosophy and science, but entirely fresh. The questions tackled here are fundamental ones: Is our experience of color an illusion? How does the metaphysical status of colors differ from that of shapes? What is the difference between a picture and a written text? Why are some pictures said to be more realistic than others? Is it because they are especially truthful or, on the contrary, because they deceive the eye? The Objective Eye explores the fundamental concepts we use constantly in our most innocent thoughts and conversations about art, as well as in the most sophisticated art theory. The book progresses from pure philosophy to applied philosophy and ranges from the metaphysics of color to Renaissance perspective, from anatomy in ancient Greece to impressionism in nineteenth-century France. Philosophers, art historians, and students of the arts will find The Objective Eye challenging and absorbing.

Conversations about Painting with Rudolf Steiner by Peter Stebbing Pdf

The purpose of this illustrated volume of first-hand recollections is to increase appreciation in the world for Rudolf Steiner's artistic contributions to modern culture. The authors represented in Conversations about Painting with Rudolf Steiner offer insights into Steiner's intentions as he responded to artists' questions about the deeper, spiritual aspects of painting, color, and role of the arts as a whole in culture and society. Peter Stebbing's inspiration for translating these conversations was an early reading of Hilde Boos-Hamburger's book on Steiner's "new art impulse" (included here). Through the years, Stebbing also came to recognize the importance of other artists who were influenced by Steiner. Margarita Voloschin, for example, describes the inner transformation required of artists who wish to deepen their artistic sensibilities as described by Rudolf Steiner. Henni Geck, though she wrote little on art, is an important figure in this school of artistic renewal through having elicited numerous training sketches from Steiner. Assya Turgenieff was a pioneer artist who worked with stained glass. Her discussion of the artistic approach she used--which incorporated both color and sculpting techniques--can be applied to other visual arts as well. Conversations about Painting with Rudolf Steiner is an extraordinary contribution to a deeper understanding of the "anthroposophic" arts. Richly illustrated, this volume will warrant serious study and frequent rereading and browsing. A great book for the coffee table. Colour in Art, Design & Nature by C. A. Brebbia,C. Greated,M. W. Collins Pdf

This book is ambitiously inter-disciplinary and may be divided into four main sections, defined in terms of the authors themselves. Firstly, there are two contributions by biologists. Secondly, the largest section is by practising artists. Thirdly, there are two engineering-based contributions. Finally, two contributions address some of the historical proponents of colour theory and art. These eleven works, in full colour, form a striking contribution to the commonwealth of colour studies and to a possible unification of Snow's two cultures.Colour and inter-disciplinarity go hand in hand. This so often involves the authors leaving the comfort zone of their original speciality and striving for excellence in another. The personal story of Franziska Schenk is but one good example. It seems that our perceptions of aesthetics and beauty must be very flexible indeed as to find absolute opposites equally fascinating. If so, it goes to show how wonderful are the construction and operation of the human brain. Does psychology win in the end? Does colour lead to a single culture?

Colour, Healing and the Human Soul by Gladys Mayer Pdf

In a delightful study – originally comprising two separate booklets – the accomplished artist and teacher Gladys Mayer explains that colour is nothing other than the very substance of the soul. Just as the body is made up of mineral, water, air and warmth, so the soul is made up of colour. This is revealed in the emotions of sadness and joy and the many shades in between, as expressed in human language – for example: 'seeing red', 'rose-coloured spectacles' and 'jaundiced view'. Mayer discusses the basis of colour theory and its methodology, and the importance of colour for everyday life and health. It is as fundamental to the soul as air is to the body. By increasing our awareness of the spiritual laws of colour, we can acquire a balanced and enriched life of soul. Thus, colour can become a healing force in life, enabling us to tackle the deadening, grey aspects of our mechanised civilisation. Based on the work of Rudolf Steiner, which she studied intensively for many years, Mayer offers an approach to colour that is of value to painters and artists, as well as to those interested in psychology, health and healing, spirituality and personal development.

The Brilliant History of Color in Art by Victoria Finlay Pdf

The history of art is inseparable from the history of color. And what a fascinating story they tell together: one that brims with an all-star cast of characters, eye-opening details, and unexpected detours through the annals of human civilization and scientific discovery. Enter critically acclaimed writer and popular journalist Victoria Finlay, who here takes readers across the globe and over the centuries on an unforgettable tour through the brilliant history of color in art. Written for newcomers to the subject and aspiring young artists alike, Finlay’s quest to uncover the origins and science of color will beguile readers of all ages with its warm and conversational style. Her rich narrative is illustrated in full color throughout with 166 major works of art—most from the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum. Readers of this book will revel in a treasure trove of fun-filled facts and anecdotes. Were it not for Cleopatra, for instance, purple might not have become the royal color of the Western world. Without Napoleon, the black graphite pencil might never have found its way into the hands of Cézanne. Without mango-eating cows, the sunsets of Turner might have lost their shimmering glow. And were it not for the pigment cobalt blue, the halls of museums worldwide might still be filled with forged Vermeers. Red ocher, green earth, Indian yellow, lead white—no pigment from the artist’s broad and diverse palette escapes Finlay’s shrewd eye in this breathtaking exploration.

A Cultural History of Color in Antiquity by David Wharton,Kirsten Wolf,Carole P. Biggam Pdf

"A Cultural History of Color presents a history of 5000 years of color in western culture. The first systematic and comprehensive history, the work examines how color has been perceived, developed, produced and traded, and how it has been used in all aspects of performance - from the political to the religious to the artistic - and how it shapes all we see, from food and nature to interiors and architecture, to objects and art, to fashion and adornment, to the color of the naked human body, and to the way our minds work and our languages are created"--

The Individuality of Colour by Elisabeth Wagner-Koch,Gerard Wagner Pdf

"What is postulated here is not the dogmatic laying down of a way of working. Rather the aim is to make evident one possible means of access to an experience of the color world ... and guide actual practice to Rudolf Steiner's sketch motifs--to their eminent educational power--for we recognize in them a path that can become of great significance to the developing human soul." (from the introduction) This unique workbook describes the early stages of training for painters, teachers, as well as for beginners. The stages are based on recommendations by Rudolf Steiner for the development of a renewed art of painting for our time. The book draws on Steiner's indications for teaching painting in the first Waldorf school, his lectures on color and art, and sketches he made for painters. Together, they form a self-contained system of exercises for a new, spiritually alive art.
