The Ink Dragon and the Art of Flight by Jordan Riley Swan,Ezra Zabit Pdf

Secrets aren’t made for the shadows. They’re made for full-color comic panels. Former Coat Warden and now-reclusive comic book artist David Felman has a secret, one he’s poised to reveal to the world—if only he can dot the i’s, cross the t’s, and shade the last few claws. David’s time on dragon back has him perfectly situated to reveal some of the horrors the government would rather the public not know about their dealings with the winged creatures. Jade Atallah has always wanted one thing: to do her family proud by becoming a Coat Warden. Having passed all the tests and made it into the elite Blacking Program, paired with her black-scaled dragon Night Armor, she thinks she’s done just that. But when her assignment to tail a certain artist results in gaining unsavory knowledge about the program she works for, everything she knows is called into question. With the fate of her own dragon hanging in the balance, along with the many others who are part of the Blackwing Program, Jade must team up with David to make sure the truth comes to light. And they must do so quickly, before the government manages to silence them for good. *** It's the Roaring Twenties—speakeasies are around every corner, jazz is burning up Harlem, and the dragon population is booming. But it's a lonely job for the brave Coat Wardens who patrol the skies of the Eastern Americas, as love is even harder to hold on to than the dragons they fly…

“Delightfully quirky.” —Kirkus Reviews Perfect for fans of The One and Only Ivan, this irresistible debut novel combines plucky humor and a whole lot of heart in a story about the true meaning of family. Sometimes flying means keeping your feet on the ground… Born in a dismal room in a pet store, Alastair the African grey parrot dreams of escape to bluer skies. He’d like nothing more than to fly away to a palm tree with his beloved sister, Aggie. But when Aggie is purchased by twelve-year-old Fritz, and Alastair is adopted by elderly dance-enthusiast and pie-baker Albertina Plopky, the future looks ready to crash-land. In between anxiously plucking his feathers, eating a few books, and finding his own poetic voice, Alastair plots his way to a family reunion. But soon he’s forced to choose between the life he’s always dreamed of and admitting the truth: that sometimes, the bravest adventure is in letting go.

The Early Poetry of Robert Graves by Frank L. Kersnowski Pdf

Like many men of his generation, poet Robert Graves was indelibly marked by his experience of trench warfare in World War I. The horrific battles in which he fought and his guilt over surviving when so many perished left Graves shell-shocked and disoriented, desperately seeking a way to bridge the rupture between his conventional upbringing and the uncertainties of post-war British society. In this study of Graves's early poetry, Frank Kersnowski explores how his war neurosis opened a door into the unconscious for Graves and led him to reject the essential components of the Western idea of reality-reason and predictability. In particular, Kersnowski traces the emergence in Graves's early poems of a figure he later called The White Goddess, a being at once terrifying and glorious, who sustains life and inspires poetry. Drawing on interviews with Graves's family, as well as unpublished correspondence and drafts of poems, Kersnowski argues that Graves actually experienced the White Goddess as a real being and that his life as a poet was driven by the purpose of celebrating and explaining this deity and her matriarchy.

Selected Poems by Robert Graves Pdf

A new and essential selection from the range and bulk of Robert Graves's poetry, edited by Ulster poet Michael Longley. This edition will restore Graves to view as a major twentieth century poet, and demonstrate his manifold achievement as war poet, as love poet, and as - in the round - a secular visionary whose poems are 'inimitable, eccentric marvels - some of which are extraordinary, many are masterly, all are like nothing else ever written' (Randall Jarrell).

Practical Stylistics by H. G. Widdowson Pdf

This book takes a particular perspective on the nature of poetry and follows this through to proposals for teaching. It focuses attention on how the use of language in short poems can set up conditions for individual interpretation and the representation of reality in ways other than those which are established by normal social convention. This view of poetry, it is argued, leads to a recognition of its essential role in education, and provides a set of principles for an approach to teaching it which integrates the study of language and literature.

Large White Butterfly by J. Feltwell Pdf

The literature is still one of our biggest frustrations to-day. There is, in one sense, too much of it, and in another not enough - for there are insufficient and inadequate published guidelines through this jungle. Last year two excellent books for students of ecological chemistry were published, one in France and one in England. The concordance of the references was a mere overall 3% rising to 7% in the chapters on pheromones. Even in the computer age, the channel remains a formidable barrier to the rapid exchange of biological information. At the present time we are in urgent need of compilations similar to John Feltwell's "The Large White Butterfly"; since the literature has become virtually unmanageable. This insect is now a demonstration object in the sixth form schoolroom; an experimental "rabbit" in the University laboratory; a test animal in virus and bacterial research projects; a tool for the study of flight mechanisms, migration, plant biochemistry, hormones, genetics, allergies, pigments, mimicry, etc. , etc. John Feltwell has, by this massive compilation, rendered us a great service - in fact he has given us a present of 4,000 hours of library time spent in 50 different libraries in seven countries. In the process he has collected 8000 references to the Large White. Of these, 4000 have been selected, and we are given a brief indication of their contents.
