The Science and Art of Dental Ceramics - Volume I by John W. McLean Pdf

There is a no more rewarding experience in restorative dentistry than to duplicate to perfection the colour, texture and surface anatomy of the human tooth. Dental porcelain is the closest match to tooth enamel of all our restorative materials but is perhaps the most difficult to use in dental practice. A study of the science of dental porcelain will enable the dentist or technician to perfect his art since it develops an increasing awareness of the fundamental problems in construction. Preparation design, the stresses developing in porcelain restorations, the influence of opaque backgrounds on colour, surface reflectivity and light transmission in crowns are some of the complex factors that influence the success of a porcelain veneer restoration. A survey of metals, bonding systems, cements and impression materials will enable the clinician to select his materials with greater confidence. New research on the shoulder preparation for the veneer crown also sheds light on the controversy of the bevel versus the butt joint. The author has attempted to rationalise the use of both metal and alumina reinforced ceramics and to show how no ingle system can be applied universally if optimum aesthetics is to be achieved.

Dr. Spaulding exhibited one of these crowns to a few of the men of Detroit who were enthusiastic in the use of porcelain, at a meeting of the Detroit Dental Society, early in 1903. In June of the same year he gave the first clinic ever given in this work at the annual meeting of the Michigan State Dental Society held at Petoskey. Later in the year Dr. Land and Dr. Spaulding gave a joint clinic at Rochester, where the work met with an enthusiastic reception and was started on its way to a prominent place among the good things in artistic dentistry. In December of the same year Dr. Spaulding demonstrated the crown before a meeting in New York City. The author also exhibited one of these crowns to a group of friends while attending a meeting of the Institute of Dental Pedagogics held in Buffalo during the last week of December of the same year, and also enjoyed the distinction of making the only practical case of the jacket crown made at the Fourth International Dental Congress held at St. Louis in August, 1904. This clinic was reported in the proceedings of the meeting and also described in The Items of Interest, also in a French journal published in Paris, France. Dr. W. C. Herbert gave a very instructive table clinic at the same meeting. Probably no other valuable addition to the possibilities of dental art was ever so eagerly welcomed by a few, so admired and neglected by the profession in general, as the jacket crown. Even after fifteen years of successful service by these crowns there are men of great prominence crying out against them, claiming that they are impractical, as teeth must "breathe" to remain in a normal condition. In spite of this, however, hundreds of teeth are "holding...

Notes on Dental Porcelain by V. Walter Gilbert Pdf

Excerpt from Notes on Dental Porcelain: A Practical Treatise Especially Devoted to the Interests of the Beginner Notwithstanding the fact that literature upon the subject of porcelain work has been much in evidence, there has appeared little information which is of value to the beginner in this class of work. A student or practitioner desiring to make a start in the practice of porcelain work is wafted about by the opinions of others like a voter who listens to political "spellbinders." The opinion of the high-fusing enthusiast is accepted only to be discarded upon reading or hearing the opinion of the low-fusing enthusiast and vice versa. The wonderful assurance with which the different manufacturers make use of the word "best" is calculated to mystify the inexperienced. In the following pages the author has endeavored to describe the uses of the different grades of porcelain and to explain the principles underlying their application. The many porcelain compounds now found on the market cover a wide range of adaptability. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Porcelain Dental Restorations by William Albert Capon Pdf

Excerpt from Porcelain Dental Restorations: With a Chapter on Gold Inlays Much has been written in dental literature on the various applications of porcelain in dental restorations, but little serious effort has been made to present the subject to the profession in text-book form. In an endeavor to meet the demand for such a work, I have yielded to the solicitation of many friends in the profession to present methods of practice which have been evolved after long years of experience in a manner which may be readily understood by the novice, as well as by the practitioner who is already more or less familiar with this branch of dental practice.
