Jones the Atlas of European Mammals by A. J. Mitchell-Jones,J Mitchell Pdf

The Atlas of European Mammals is the result of more than 10 years work by specialists throughout Europe and is the first project of the Societas Europaea Mammalogica (SEM), founded in Paris in 1988. Under the supervision of an Editorial Committee, coordinators have collected and validated distribution data for each country using an agreed species list and a standard mapping system. Maps of 194 species are included, plotted on a 50 km UTM grid and based entirely on field observations. Over 93,000 records are mapped with separate symbols for data collected before or after 1970. Where appropriate, recent extinctions have been taken into account, so these maps represent the most up-to-date picture possible of the distribution of each species in Europe. Specialist authors have complimented the maps with a brief overview of each species, including details of distribution, habitat and population status. In addition to the maps and species accounts, the atlas also contains a complete species list for the whole European biogeographic region, with details of the international legal and conservation status of each species and the common names of each species in 33 European languages. The atlas thus represents a unique and essential reference source for scientists, conservationists; policy makers and the interested amateur. Coverage for Europe is complete as far east as the border of the former Soviet Union, and it has been possible to include the Baltic States and the Russian region of Kaliningrad, as well as the Canaries and Azores.

Atlas of the Mammals of Great Britain and Northern Ireland by Derek Crawley,Frazer Coomber,Laura Kubasiewicz,Colin Harrower,Peter Evans,James Waggitt,Bethany Smith,Fiona Matthews,Mammal Society Pdf

Based on more than 1.8 million records, this Atlas provides the most up-to-date information on the current distributions of both terrestrial and marine mammals in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. Many changes over time, such as the rapid invasion of the grey squirrel, the recovery of the pine marten and the decline of the water vole, are readily apparent from the detailed maps. Fully illustrated with photographs, detailed information is provided for 84 species, including descriptions of their ecology and identification, together with graphs showing the seasonal distribution of records. Data are also presented for feral species, vagrants, and cetaceans that have only ever been found as strandings. The Atlas will be an invaluable source of information to mammal enthusiasts, professional ecologists, and policy makers.

Atlas of terrestrial mammals of the Ionian and Aegean islands by Marco Masseti Pdf

The goal of this book is to foster better knowledge of the mammalian fauna of the Mediterranean islands. The atlas presents the current state of knowledge of the past and present distribution of the non-flying terrestrial mammals of the Ionian and Aegean islands. It provides a distribution map for each species with extensive references and a description of all the mammalian taxa. The book also focuses on the important role of human beings in the redefinition of the insular ecological equilibrium, as well as on the environmental impact of biological invasions. The protection and study of this fauna can provide an opportunity for testing a range of different evolutionary theories.

Semi-aquatic Mammals by Glynnis A. Hood Pdf

A groundbreaking review of the seldom-studied semi-aquatic freshwater mammals, covering biology, behavior, and conservation. Semi-aquatic mammals are some of the rarest and most endangered mammals on earth. What binds them together in the minds of biologists, despite their diverse taxa and body forms, are evolutionary traits that allow them to succeed in two worlds—spending some time on land and some in the water. Semi-aquatic Mammals fills a crucial void in the literature by highlighting the important ecological roles and curious biology of these remarkable animals. In this unique book, wildlife ecologist Glynnis A. Hood presents the first comprehensive examination of a global suite of 140 freshwater semi-aquatic mammals. Each one has overcome the distinct ecological challenges of thriving in both aquatic and terrestrial habitats as part of everyday life. Covering millions of years, Hood's exploration begins with the extinct otter-like Buxolestes and extends to consider the geographical, physical, behavioral, and reproductive traits of its present-day counterparts. Hood explains how semi-aquatic mammals are able to navigate a viscous environment with almost no resistance to heat loss, reveals how they maintain the physical skills necessary to avoid predation and counter a more thermally changeable environment, and describes the array of adaptations that facilitate success in their multifaceted habitats. She also addresses specific conservation challenges faced by these mammals. Her analysis takes readers to the haunts of intriguing semi-aquatic mammals from around the world, • introducing the "paradoxical platypus," an Australian egg-laying monotreme that detects prey through electroreception • venturing into the swamps and mangroves of Southeast Asia, where fishing cats wave their paws above the water's surface to lure prey • trawling the streams and lakes of South America, where the female water opossum uses its backward-facing pouch to keep her babies warm during deep dives • spending time with species that engineer freshwater habitats into more productive and complex systems, including North American beavers and Africa's common hippopotamus Featuring award-winning artist Meaghan Brierley's stunning illustrations throughout, Semi-aquatic Mammals is an unparalleled reference on some of the world's most tenacious and fascinating mammals.
