The Audacious Miss Eliza by Laura Rollins Pdf

As it turns out, a London Season is the worst place to find love. Eliza Mulgrave never expected to make her bows to society. Yet here she is, dancing at Almacks and riding through Hyde Park. It would be perfectly delightful if it weren't for the whispers and scornful glances. She certainly never sought to quit her place in society as a tradesman's daughter. At least then she had known who she was and how to act; now, she's completely lost. Adam Lambert has been raised to be a viscount and though the time has come sooner than expected he is confident stepping into this new life. Until he meets his Father's best kept secret-a little girl. And now she's Adam's responsibility. Surely someone ought to have told him about her before now. After stumbling through an initial meeting, Adam and Eliza both find in the other what they most need this Season-a sincere friend. But society is not often willing to grant two people room to learn for themselves who to be, or who to love. As the first stand-alone novel in a new series by author Laura Rollins, The Audacious Miss Eliza begins the Daughters of Courage series. This charming story is a light-hearted, clean and wholesome romance set in the Regency era.

The Dauntless Lady Susan by Laura Rollins Pdf

She'll never see him as more than a friend. He'll never see her as less than his everything. This past London Season has made two facts abundantly clear to Lord William Blackmore: he is not the gentleman Lady Susan is looking for, while she is the only lady he could ever love. But how exactly does one court a lady after having dumped pond water over her head as a child? When Susan confronts him about his mysterious love interest, William falters and instead of confessing the truth, he asks Susan to teach him how to capture a lady's affections. Unable to stop herself from playing matchmaker, Susan agrees, unaware William's true target is herself. However, it soon becomes apparent, if William is to keep Susan as a friend, he'll forever lose the chance at more. The Fearless Miss Dinah by Laura Rollins Pdf

In his mind, nothing is more important than the plan. In her mind, ruining the plan would be even better. For months now, Miss Dinah Mulgrave has been hiding that she's a spy, working to stop smugglers. A pretty dress, a charming smile, and a little flirting are all that's necessary for a lady to learn all sorts of secrets. But when she's sent on the most dangerous mission thus far, things turn terribly wrong. Though she escapes unharmed, a man's cover is blown. Not only that, but the two of them are caught in a compromising situation. There is nothing for it but to wed. As a resigned bachelor secretly working to stop the smuggler who murdered his closest friend, Lord Henry Stanton lives life by a strict plan. But after a certain lovely, yet spontaneous young woman throws one of his plans for a loop, Henry finds himself no longer with a viable cover or a means of getting justice for his friend. As if that wasn't enough, he must marry the very woman who destroyed all he'd worked years for. Dinah and Henry begin life together as little more than strangers. Though Dinah approaches this new change in her life optimistically, Henry puts his foot down-he will never see her as more than another family member living under his roof. But Dinah isn't ready to give up on love and romance. And as her cousin and sister have proved, no one gainsays a Mulgrave. Not even one's own husband. As the third stand-alone novel in a new series by author Laura Rollins, The Fearless Miss Dinah continues the Daughters of Courage series. This charming story is a light-hearted, clean and wholesome romance set in the Regency era (think: a clean Bridgerton). All books in this series have their own Happily-Ever-After and can be read apart but are best enjoyed in proper order. The Merry-go-round by William Somerset Maugham Pdf

Example in this ebook CHAPTER I All her life Miss Elizabeth Dwarris had been a sore trial to her relations. A woman of means, she ruled tyrannously over a large number of impecunious cousins, using her bank-balance like the scorpions of Rehoboam to chastise them, and, like many another pious creature, for their soul’s good making all and sundry excessively miserable. Nurtured in the evangelical ways current in her youth, she insisted that her connections should seek salvation according to her own lights; and, with harsh tongue and with bitter gibe, made it her constant business to persuade them of their extreme unworthiness. She arranged lives as she thought fit, and ventured not only to order the costume and habits, but even the inner thought of those about her: the Last Judgment could have no terrors for any that had faced her searching examination. She invited to stay with her in succession various poor ladies who presumed on a distant tie to call her Aunt Eliza, and they accepted her summons, more imperious than a royal command, with gratitude by no means unmixed with fear, bearing the servitude meekly as a cross which in the future would meet due testamentary reward. Miss Dwarris loved to feel her power. During these long visits—for, in a way, the old lady was very hospitable—she made it her especial object to break the spirit of her guests; and it entertained her hugely to see the mildness with which were borne her extravagant demands, the humility with which every inclination was crushed. She took a malicious pleasure in publicly affronting persons, ostensibly to bend a sinful pride, or in obliging them to do things which they particularly disliked. With a singular quickness for discovering the points on which they were most sensitive, she attacked every weakness with blind invective till the sufferer writhed before her, raw and bleeding: no defect, physical or mental, was protected from her raillery, and she could pardon as little an excess of avoirdupois as a want of memory. Yet, with all her heart, she despised her victims, she flung in their face insolently their mercenary spirit, vowing that she would never leave a penny to such a pack of weak fools; it delighted her to ask for advice in the distribution of her property among charitable societies, and she heard, with unconcealed hilarity, their unwilling and confused suggestions. With one of her relations only, Miss Dwarris found it needful to observe a certain restraint, for Miss Ley, perhaps the most distant of her cousins, was as plain-spoken as herself, and had, besides, a far keener wit whereby she could turn rash statements to the utter ridicule of the speaker. Nor did Miss Dwarris precisely dislike this independent spirit; she looked upon her in fact with a certain degree of affection and not a little fear. Miss Ley, seldom lacking a repartee, appeared really to enjoy the verbal contests, from which, by her greater urbanity, readiness, and knowledge, she usually emerged victorious: it confounded, but at the same time almost amused, the elder lady that a woman so much poorer than herself, with no smaller claims than others to the coveted inheritance, should venture not only to be facetious at her expense, but even to carry war into her very camp. Miss Ley, really not grieved to find some one to whom without prickings of conscience she could speak her whole mind, took a grim pleasure in pointing out to her cousin the poor logic of her observations or the foolish unreason of her acts. No cherished opinion of Miss Dwarris was safe from satire—even her evangelicism was laughed at, and the rich old woman, unused to argument, was easily driven into self-contradiction; and then—for the victor took no pains to conceal her triumph—she grew pale and speechless with rage. Audacious Women by Rebecca Bartholomew Pdf

Victorians loved to hear stories about the secret lives of Mormon women. Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Joaquin Miller, A. Conan Doyle, and others fed the public's curiosity with tale after tale. Naive Manchester shopgirls seduced by lecherous missionaries, illiterate Liverpudlian fishwives shanghaied into domestic slavery in Utah -- these were the stories that shaped public opinion. What was the truth behind such stereotypes? In fact, most female immigrants to Utah were former shopgirls, factory workers, and home pieceworkers in London and Manchester, and many were illiterate. Were they naive adventuresses? Rebecca Bartholomew fleshes out real-life profiles of these pioneering women through available letters, diaries, and public documents. They were by-and-large devout and most approached their uncertain future with eyes wide open. At minimum, they were vaguely aware of what their religious commitment entailed. If they did not fulfill Victorian fantasies of young concubines who had been abducted into desert harems, what about the romanticized icons of Mormon inspirational literature? Bartholomew: "These women made mistakes. But if they were not angels, neither were they fools. They are likable. Their lives had meaning. They demonstrated that virtue has unlikely habitats and could even sprout in (Utah)."
