The Awful Australian (Classic Reprint) by Valerie Desmond Pdf

Excerpt from The Awful Australian There has been so much adulation lately of Australia, Australian institutions, and the Aus tralian people by writers with axes to grind and English politicians with party ends to serve that the people of the Commonwealth have come to believe that they are the salt of the earth, and that their country is Personally, I am impatient of such and I think it is time somebody called upon the self-satisfied Aus tralians to show cause why a little more humility and a little less arrogance were not more seemly. With a view to restoring an apparently lost sense of proportion to the press and public of the country, I have written the following pages. If in telling the truth I shame file Australian this book will achieve its object. Should a bowl of indigna tion be provoked, then will the condition of affairs be proved worse than my pen has power to depict, and nothing will be left but to declare Australia past redemption. This is the case for the prosecu tion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Awful Australian This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

In Bad Company by Rolf Boldrewood Pdf

Excerpt from In Bad Company: And Other Stories Bill hardwick was as fine a specimen of an Australian as you could find in a day's march. Active as a cat and strong withal, he was mostly described as 'a real good all-round chap, that you couldn't put wrong at any kind of work that a man could be asked to do. He could plough and reap, dig and mow, put up fences and huts, break in horses and drive bullocks he could milk cows and help in the dairy as handily as a woman. These and other accomplishments he was known to possess, and being a steady, sensible fellow, was always welcome when work was needed and a good man valued. Besides all this he was the fastest and the best shearer in the district of Tumut, New South Wales, Where he was born, as had been his father and mother before him. SO that he was a true Australian in every sense of the word. It could not be said that the British race had degenerated as far as he was concerned. Six feet high, broad-chested, light flanked, and standing on his legs like a game-cock, he was always ready to fight or work, run, ride or swim, in fact to tackle any muscular exercise in the world at the shortest notice. The New Arcadia by Horace Tucker Pdf

Excerpt from The New Arcadia: An Australian Story "We sit on a cloud and sing... And say the world runs smooth - while right below, Welters the black fermenting heap of life, On which our State is built. - The Saint's Tragedy. "Some Lancashire lads I know would have made short and cursory work of waiting for Government. 'Hang the Government! Why wait for them? Let us co-op. and do the work ourselves!'" - Craig. "Pull him down!" "Knock him off the seat!" "An aristocrat riding us down like dogs!" A smart fusillade of such epithets, portending hand-to-hand conflict, broke from the foremost of a straggling band of workmen; some reckless and uncanny in appearance, others listless and half-interested, but animated, for the moment, as dullest street crowds are, by occurrence of "an accident." The dog-cart, apparently of a professional man, had run over a city waif hanging on the outskirts of a detachment of "the unemployed" on their course to the noon-tide rendezvous. The leaders, welcoming a victim, were venting curses on the head of the luckless Jehu. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Reminiscences of Australia by Christopher Pemberton Hodgson Pdf

Excerpt from Reminiscences of Australia: With Hints on the Squatter's Life As it would be an unheard of circumstance for a traveller, who has doubled both Capes, who has passed over places scarce known unto men, not to favour the world with an account of what he has met with, I shall to use a colonial expression, chance it, and trust myself to your mercy. If you meet with any peculiarities, whichmay sound uncouth, or strange; be pleased to remember that, though I have often been in the presence of Royalty, the courts I have visited were only composed of sa vages, and blackfellows; and that, had it not been for my anxiety to oblige you, I should have tarried awhile to rearrange my scattered reminiscences of Australia, amid the elegancies of my earlier home. Australian Life (Classic Reprint) by Francis Adams Pdf

Excerpt from Australian Life I was walking along George Street, Brisbane, last Monday in the afternoon when I suddenly ran upon my friend Power. Power is a man worth knowing. I suppose no one has been along the Australian coast, from Perth to Port Darwin, more Often than he has. Is there a little port-town all round that he has not been in? Is there a river, navi gable or unnavigable, that finds its way into Australian seas. That he has not floated on? His stock Of tales is the largest and best Of anyone I know, and he has a sort of humorous kindliness about him, a genuine humanistic tolerance and appreciation, which has made him the friend of all sorts and conditions of men, women, and animals. He has the unctuous pleasure of discovering and understanding every oddity, and the light of this pleasure beams up in his eyes and on his lips and in his whole face as he sits Opposite some abnormal piece of humanity in a cosy corner, just as when he pauses from his submarine work in his diver's dress to observe the antics Of some eccentric denizen of the deep. The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough Pdf

In the rugged Australian Outback, three generations of Clearys live through joy and sadness, bitter defeat and magnificent triumph, driven by their dreams, sustained by remarkable strength of character... and torn by dark passions, violence and a scandalous family legacy of forbidden love. The Thorn Birds is a poignant love story, a powerful epic of struggle and sacrifice, a celebration of individuality and spirit. Most of all, it is the story of the Clearys' only daughter, Meggie, who can never possess Ralph de Bricassart, the man she so desperately adores. Ralph will rise from parish priest to the inner circles of the Vatican... but his passion for Meggie will follow him all the days of his life. Bad History and the Logics of Blockbuster Cinema by P. McGee Pdf

McGee studies historical representation in commodified, popular cinema as expressions of historical truths that more authentic histories usually miss and argues for the political and social significance of mass culture through the interpretation of four recent big-budget movies: Titanic, Gangs of New York, Australia, and Inglourious Basterds .

First Twenty Years of Australia by James Bonwick Pdf

Excerpt from First Twenty Years of Australia: A History Founded on Official Documents The story of the Early Days in Australia is one full of interest to many more than Australian settlers or the Australian born. It so differs from the tale to be told of present life there, as if centuries had passed in the interval. Dark as the chronicle may be, it is highly instructive and suggestive. We have in that gloomy and often forbidding picture of humanity a means of gauging the immense social progress of the colonies. Even in the worst phases of society at that remote period we fail not to detect some bright and pleasing features, indications of that struggle between light and darkness which ultimately led to the opening day. We have seen men and women, steeped in vice and misery, from neglect of Church and of State in Europe, emerging from poverty and moral degradation into respectability and purity.
