The Ball at the Fairgrounds by Sidney G. Spector Pdf

The story takes place in two worlds: the real and the surreal. Set in Boston and New York City, the story follows the life of a young man who does not learn and grow wise from life’s experiences. Instead, he grasps at the price of everything, oblivious to their spiritual value, including love and friendship. On a job search in New York City, he rests on a bench in Central Park, where a scene is played out that portends the future. A clown comes down a path with puppet clowns in a red canvas bag. When balloons, carried by the clown, burst near a little girl, a puppet clown jumps out of the bag and does a dance with the girl. Clowns are to have an important role in the young man’s future, as well as a person with a bow tie who constantly stalks him. Another important image is that of the dancing couple in the Renoir painting Bal a Bougival, which exemplifies the magical essence and beauty of real love. He learns of the power-hungry leadership at a voluntary health agency, and he is repelled by it. He leaves to seek employment at an art gallery. The owner is an attractive older woman who he tries to seduce him, even though she encourages his dreams of himself as a writer. An inner voice urges him downward. He also sees a young man with a bow tie and a shopping bag, looking much like himself, who appears whenever his thoughts wander toward the darker side. The surreal figure appears throughout the story, inducing wrongful behavior and actions, such as deceiving the owner of the art gallery. She despises a movie comedian who tries to buy an oil painting of a clown from her gallery at lower than the advertised price. The comedian is a collector of clown figures in plaster, wood, and glass, but no oil painting as of yet. The young man plays chess on Saturdays with the artist of the clown paintings and tries to influence him to sell another clown painting privately to the comedian. If the plan succeeds, he will get a large sum of money from the comedian for arranging the deceit. The painter wants to tell the art gallery owner in person that he will not deal exclusively with her anymore. Therefore, he meets with her in a fairgrounds in Queens, and the comedian, with knowledge of the rendezvous, bursts in unexpectedly to gloat. The young man comes there too and finds that his scheme is successful. He leaves the squabbling group and moves to a distant bench to await his girlfriend. Seated beside him is the man with a bow tie who always seems to follow him. Since he is currently the guard at the gallery, he takes his gun and shoots bow tie twice. He blinks, and bow tie disappears—blood and all. His girlfriend arrives, and from their discussion, she realizes that his dark side has taken over and breaks off their relationship. The young man decides to leave New York City, go to Las Vegas, and work for the comedian to continue to carry out his despicable

Black Baseball, 1858-1900 by James E. Brunson III Pdf

This is one of the most important baseball books to be published in a long time, taking a comprehensive look at black participation in the national pastime from 1858 through 1900. It provides team rosters and team histories, player biographies, a list of umpires and games they officiated and information on team managers and team secretaries. Well known organizations like the Washington's Mutuals, Philadelphia Pythians, Chicago Uniques, St. Louis Black Stockings, Cuban Giants and Chicago Unions are documented, as well as lesser known teams like the Wilmington Mutuals, Newton Black Stockings, San Francisco Enterprise, Dallas Black Stockings, Galveston Flyaways, Louisville Brotherhoods and Helena Pastimes. Player biographies trace their connections between teams across the country. Essays frame the biographies, discussing the social and cultural events that shaped black baseball. Waiters and barbers formed the earliest organized clubs and developed local, regional and national circuits. Some players belonged to both white and colored clubs, and some umpires officiated colored, white and interracial matches. High schools nurtured young players and transformed them into powerhouse teams, like Cincinnati's Vigilant Base Ball Club. A special essay covers visual representations of black baseball and the artists who created them, including colored artists of color who were also baseballists.

Kansas Baseball, 1858–1941 by Mark E. Eberle Pdf

As baseball was becoming the national pastime, Kansas was settling into statehood, with hundreds of towns growing up with the game. The early history of baseball in Kansas, chronicled in this book, is the story of those towns and the ballparks they built, of the local fans and teams playing out the drama of the American dream in the heart of the country. Mark Eberle's history spans the years between the Civil War–era and the start of World War II, encapsulating a time when baseball was adopted by early settlers, then taken up by soldiers sent west, and finally by teams formed to express the identity of growing towns and the diverse communities of African Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanic Americans. As elsewhere in the country, these teams represented businesses, churches, schools, military units, and prisons. There were men's teams and women's, some segregated by race and others integrated, some for adults and others for youngsters. Among them we find famous barnstormers like the House of David, the soldiers of the Seventh Cavalry who played at Fort Wallace in the 1860s, and Babe Didrikson pitching the first inning of a 1934 game in Hays. Where some of these games took place, baseball is still played, and Kansas Baseball, 1858–1941 takes us to nine of them, some of the oldest in the country. These ballparks, still used for their original purpose, are living history, and in their stories Eberle captures a vibrant image of the state's past and a vision of many innings yet to be played—a storied history and promising future that readers will be tempted to visit with this book as an informative and congenial guide.

John McGraw by Charles C. Alexander Pdf

"There has been only one manager-and his name is McGraw."-Connie Mack. "Diligently researched and artfully written, John McGraw illuminates not only the man but the transformation of America and its national pastime between 1890 and 1930."-San Francisco Chronicle. "Absorbing. . . . Alexander is a lively writer and a crisp storyteller."-New York Times. "From a historian of Alexander's stature one can expect more than just another sports book, and the result is not disappointing. With great erudition and meticulous research, he brings to life not only a game and its competitors but a whole period of U.S. history."-America. "Sports biography at its best: an entertaining, scholarly treatment of the life and times of a legendary figure. . . . Alexander portrays famed Giant manager John McGraw without sentimental bias."-Library Journal. "He ate gunpowder every morning, " complained one umpire, "and washed it down with warm blood." That described John McGraw, who in the 1890s was the rowdiest member of the ferocious Baltimore Orioles, the club that pioneered the hit-and-run, the cutoff, the squeeze play, and the "Baltimore chop." In 1902 he began his thirty-season reign as manager of the Giants, winning ten pennants-a record matched only by Casey Stengel. His career in baseball spanned forty years and two eras-from the game's raucous early days to its emergence as big business. Charles C. Alexander, a professor of history at Ohio University, Athens, and the author of Ty Cobb, calls John McGraw "perhaps the single most significant figure in baseball's history before Babe Ruth transformed the game with his mammoth home runs and unparalleled showmanship."

The Page Fence Giants by Mitch Lutzke Pdf

The Page Fence Giants, an all-star black baseball club sponsored by a woven-wire fence company in Adrian, Michigan, graced the diamond in the 1890s. Formed through a partnership between black and white boosters, the team's respectable four-year run was an early integration success--before integration was phased out decades ahead of Jackie Robinson's 1947 debut, and the growing Jim Crow sentiment blocked the Page Fence Giant's best talent from the major leagues. This book tells the the story of a long-ignored team at the close of the 19th century, whose Hall of Famer second baseman Sol White was but one of their best players.
