Songs of the Serbian People by Vuk Stefanović Karadžić,Milne Holton,Vasa D. Mihailovich Pdf

In the early nineteenth century, Vuk Karadzic, a Serb scholar and linguist, collected and eventually published transcriptions of the traditional oral poetry of the South Slavs. It was a monumental and unprecedented undertaking. Karadzic gathered and heard sung to him the rich songs of Balkan peasants, outlaws, and professional singers and their rebel heroes. His four volumes constitute the classic anthology of Balkan oral poetry, treasured for nearly two centuries by readers of all literatures, and influential to such literary giants as Goethe, Merimee, Pushkin, Mickiewicz, and Sir Walter Scott. This edition of the songs offers the most complete and authoritative translations ever assembled in English. Holton and Mihailovich, leading scholars of Slavic literature, have preserved here the unique meter and rhythm at the heart of Serbian oral poetry, as well as the idiom of the original singers. Extensive notes and comments aid the reader in understanding the poems, the history they record and the oral tradition that lies beneath them, the singers and their audience. The songs contain seven cycles, identified here in sections titled: Songs Before History, Before Kosovo, the Battle of Kosovo, Marko Karadzic, Under the Turks, Songs of the Outlaws, and Songs of the Serbian Insurrection. The editors have selected the best known and most representative songs from each of the cycles. A complete bibliography is also provided. "This is the most comprehensive collection of Serbian oral poetry available today. The editors have done a superb job in presenting this invaluable material from the treasury of European folklore". Toma Longinovic, University of Wisconsin, Madison "There is no doubtin my mind that this large and informative collective will be of great and lasting value and interest to everyone concerned with the folk traditions and oral literatures of the perplexing and psychologically intriguing Southern Slavs". George Vid Tomashhevich, Buffalo State College

Some Notes on Marko Kraljevic (Prince Marko) by Vladislav Boskovic Pdf

Essay from the year 2007 in the subject History - Asia, grade: keine, , language: English, abstract: Kraljević Marko is the epic name of King Marko Mrnjavčević. The word 'Kraljević' means “the young king” or “the king’s son" in English. Marko was the regional king of a small principality in present-day Macedonia. As a Turkish vassal, he had to serve Bāyezid I Yildirim, the ‘Thunderbolt,’ in various military campaigns and he paid regular dues in tribute. It is widely accepted that King Marko accompanied Sultan Bāyezid in the campaign against a much smaller Wallachian army led by Voivode Mircea cel Bătrân and that he was killed at the battle of Rovine while fighting on the side of the Ottomans, a historical fact hardly likely to win him recognition and high regard from his fellow countrymen. That is to say, although he did not feel in duty bound to die in a battle against the Ottomans as his ‘mates’ did at the battle of Kosovo plain in 1389, people praised this petty lord as the greatest national hero ever and rewarded him with immortal epic songs throughout the five centuries of Ottoman rule and ever since. It is a psychological puzzle which has stirred historians and literary critics alike to investigate the matter till the present day.

Songs & Legends of Kraljevic Marko by Stefan Cvetkovic Pdf

Kraljevic Marko is the greatest hero of the Serbian and South Slavic lands. The songs and tales which speak of his adventures and fame are full of mythological themes connecting us to the most primordial times of our existence, in the depths of our ancestral cult. The aim of the book is to present these songs in their essence, by purifying them from the historical and religious layers. As such, their symbolism becomes clear and inseparable from the core of the ancient European traditions, which is the ancestral cult and therefore, the reincarnation within the kin and the enlightenment of the mind.

Prince Marko by Tanya Popovic Pdf

One of the most popular of the south European epic heroes—a counterpart of the French Roland or Spain’s El Cid—Prince Marko has not been well known in America. The historical Marko headed a small kingdom in Macedonia in the fourteenth century. A vassal of the Turkish sultans, he was a relatively minor historical figure. Yet in the oral tradition he was transmuted into a figure of legend, the great hero who protected the South Slavic people from injustice and oppression. In Prince Marko, Popovic traces the epic hero’s themes, over time and across countries. She looks at the factual and fictional images of Marko, especially as he was presented in epic poetry and popular lore. Popovic also examines the legend and history of the Prince as revealed in many epic songs. Prince Marko is a compelling account of a medieval king transformed by epic bards into a legend that will appeal to historians, anthropologists, and folklorists.

Rethinking Serbian-Albanian Relations by Aleksandar Pavlović,Gazela Pudar Draško,Rigels Halili Pdf

Identifying and explaining common views, ideas and traditions, this volume challenges the concept of Serbian-Albanian hostility by reinvestigating recent and historical events in the region. The contributors put forward critically oriented initiatives and alternatives to shed light on a range of relations and perspectives. The central aim of the book is to ‘figure out’ the problematic relations between Serbs and Albanians – that is, to comprehend its origins and the actors involved, and to find ways to resolve and deal with this enmity. Treating the hostility as a construct of a long-running discourse about the Serbian or Albanian ‘Other’, scholars and intellectuals from Serbia, Kosovo and Albania examine the origins, channels, agents and mediums of this discourse from the 18th century to the present. Tracing the roots of the two ethnic groups' political divisions, contemporary practices and actions allows the contributors to reconsider mutually held negative perceptions and identify elements of a common, shared history. Examples of past and current cooperation are used to offer a critical analysis of all three societies. This interdisciplinary publication brings together historiographical, literary, sociological, political, anthropological and philosophical analyses and enquiries and will be of interest to researchers in the fields of sociology, politics, cultural studies, history or anthropology; and to academics working in Slavonic and East European studies.
