The Bamboo Fire by William E. Mitchell Pdf

Anthropology is primarily done in the field, unlike the laboratory oriented experimental sciences. Experimental sciences make their observations in constructed settings that permit variables influencing the outcome of the experiment to be known and controlled. In contrast, anthropology's object of inquiry, like the science of ethology is life experience in its natural setting. To understand how people organize their lives both in thought and in action, one must settle among them for a very long time. The Wape of Papua New Guinea inhabit a mountainous rain forest and live in sedentary villages. They are slash and burn horticulturalists. marriage is by bride wealth and polygyny is permitted but rare. Male status is egalitarian and, although the society is hierarchical in terms of sex and age differences, both women and the young enjoy higher status than in many other New Guinea societies. While most Wape are nominal Christians, traditional religious beliefs and practices are of major importance. This book concentrates on describing the field work process by giving the reader a feeling of the reflexive nature of this experience. It demonstrate not only how the anthropologist proceeds in her or his work, but describes the social and psychological context in which that work evolves and how anthropologists respond to it both within oneself and in communication with others. While it is a book about the Wape people it is also a book about how one anthropologist tried to understand them. It integrates the subjective and objective into a common research method. Related to the book, the author has published a film, Magical Curing, and a CD, The Living Dead and Dying: Music of the New Guinea Wape.

Bamboo In The Backyard by Dipak Sarmah Pdf

Bamboo is one of the three most important and well-distributed naturally occurring plant species of Karnataka; the other two species are teak (Tectona grandis L.f.) and sandal (Santalum album L.). While bamboo is fairly abundant in the deciduous forests of the Western Ghats region, it can also be found in interior Karnataka as well as in the Eastern Plains. However, large-scale utilization of the state’s enormous natural bamboo resources is not feasible in view of certain issues related to policy and management of the forests. In light of the restricted availability of bamboo from the public forests, growing bamboo under agroforestry and farm forestry to meet the demands of people and industries assumes significance. The book, Bamboo in the Backyard, attempts at providing an overview of the bamboo-bearing forests of Karnataka, their past working, and present status. As its title suggests, the book underscores the need to bring bamboo closer to the people. In recent years, agroforestry, farm forestry and dry-land horticulture have made tremendous strides in Karnataka. Adding bamboo to the list of tree species that are being planted by farmers will add to the plant diversity in their farmlands and aid in enhancing the greenery of the agrarian landscape. Besides supporting and complementing agricultural operations, bamboo can contribute significantly to the farmers’ overall income and general welfare.

The Art of Fire by Daniel Hume Pdf

Fire can fascinate, inspire, capture the imagination and bring families and communities together. It has the ability to amaze, energise and touch something deep inside all of us. For thousands of years, at every corner of the globe, humans have been huddling around fires: from the basic and primitive essentials of light, heat, energy and cooking, through to modern living, fire plays a central role in all of our lives. The ability to accurately and quickly light a fire is one of the most important skills anyone setting off on a wilderness adventure could possess, yet very little has been written about it. Through his narrative Hume also meditates on the wider topics surrounding fire and how it shapes the world around us.

Modern Engineered Bamboo Structures by Y Xiao,Z Li,K.W. Liu Pdf

Fast-growing and local to some of the poorest communities in the tropics and subtropics, bamboo holds huge potential for climate change mitigation, innovative construction and job creation, but the material is rarely used for more than simple construction and household use. Modern Engineered Bamboo Structures collects the papers presented at the third International Conference on Modern Bamboo Structures (ICBS2018, Beijing, China, 25-27 June 2018). The overarching theme of the book is ‘Enhancing Cooperation for Green Development through Bamboo’s Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals’. The contributions focus on how to realize bamboo’s huge potential in a number of areas: sustainable commodity production, disaster-resilient construction, poverty alleviation, climate change mitigation and adaptation, land restoration and biodiversity protection. Modern Engineered Bamboo Structures recognizes bamboo’s various benefits, and aims at ministers, policymakers and representatives from research institutes, development organizations, NGOs or UN bodies and the private sector.
