Horizon by Barry Lopez Pdf

From the National Book Award-winning writer, humanitarian, environmentalist and author of the now-classic Arctic Dreams: a vivid, poetic, capacious work that recollects the travels around the world and the encounters--human, animal, and natural--that have shaped his extraordinary life. Poignantly, powerfully, it also asks "How do we move forward?" Taking us nearly from pole to pole--from modern megacities to some of the most remote regions on the earth--Barry Lopez, hailed by the Los Angeles Times Book Review as "one of our finest writers," gives us his most far-ranging yet personal work to date, in a book that moves through decades of his life as it describes his travels to six regions of the world: from the Oregon coast where he lives to the northernmost reaches of Canada; to the Galapagos; to the Kenyan desert; to Botany Bay in Australia; and in the resounding last section of this magisterial book, unforgettably to the ice shelves of Antarctica. As he revisits his growing up and these myriad travels, Lopez also probes the long history of humanity's quests and explorations, including the prehistoric peoples who trekked across Skraeling Island in northern Canada; the colonialists who plundered Central Africa; an Enlightenment-era Englishman who sailed the Pacific and a Native American emissary who arrived in Japan before it opened to the West. He confronts today's ecotourism in the tropics and visits the haunting remnants of a French colonial prison on Île du Diable in French Guiana. Through these journeys, and friendships forged along the way with scientists, archeologists, artists and local residents, Lopez searches for meaning and purpose in a broken world. With tenderness and intimacy, Horizon evokes the stillness and the silence of the hottest, the coldest and the most desolate places on the globe. It speaks with beauty and urgency to the invisible ties that unite us; voices concern and frustration alongside humanity and hope; and looks forward to our shared future as much as it looks back at a single life. Revelatory, powerful, profound, this is an epic work of nonfiction that makes you see the world differently: a crowning achievement by one of our most humane voices--one needed now more than ever.

Political Wings by Alun Wyburn-Powell Pdf

This is the first biography of Rt. Hon. William Wedgwood Benn DSO, DFC, first Viscount Stansgate, cabinet minister under MacDonald and Attlee, Air Commodore with active service in both World Wars, defector from the Liberals to Labour over his dispute with Lloyd George, and father of Tony Benn. Benn served in the army and RAF during the First World War (when he took part in the first parachute drop behind enemy lines at night) and in the Second World War he reached the rank of acting Air Commodore). His eldest son Michael, heir to the viscountcy, died on active service with the RAF, leaving his second son Tony to inherit the title and a seat in the House of Lords. ??Before his death, Tony Benn gave extensive interviews for this book. His brother, David has also provided interviews and material, as have other members of the family including Stephen Benn (now the third Viscount Stansgate). Extensive paperwork left by William Wedgwood Benn (now in the Parliamentary Archives) including his diary and unfinished, unpublished autobiography were all utilised in the construction of this biography. Alun Wyburn-Powell has managed to construct a biographical study of real force, weaving together snippets from Benn's own private papers with insights from his family and colleagues in order to create an authentic impression of Benn and the times in which he lived.

Beckoning - Beyond the Horizon by Edward G Bottomley Pdf

'Beckoning - Beyond the Horizon' is a sequel to, but very different from 'Beckoning - Poetry of Life'.Taken together, the two, mainly non-fiction books, cover aspects of life which impact most, if not all of us, at some stage. The first significant difference is the inclusion of a black and white photograph opposite each page of writing/poetry. The author was previously a freelance photographer. Each photograph relates to the title opposite, making for an enhanced reading experience. Additionally, all the photographs were shot in the three northwestern states of Mexico - Chihuahua, Sonora and Baja California. As such, they also provide some sense of that part of the world. The area is nicely 'Beyond the Horizon' of the author's home in Sierra Vista, Arizona. The second major difference is the format. The book is the author's creation of a circle of writing where each item moves gradually on from the previous subject until, on reaching the last, one is connected straight back to the first. A sense of this will be gained by scanning the 'Contents' pages. The objective of both books is to provide very condensed and, hopefully, insightful and positive thought stimulation for anyone exploring their personal philosophy of life. For busy people there could be a huge time saving, compared with researching many of the subjects. Both books are indexed for readily accessing any subject of interest. In that sense, reading may be sequential or as research material by finding the specific subject relevant to life events, at any particular time in life. The launch price is at approximately a 25% discount from the retail price from early June 2020 onwards.

Rat Island by William Stolzenburg Pdf

Rat Island rises from the icy gray waters of the Bering Sea, a mass of volcanic rock covered with tundra, midway between Alaska and Siberia. Once a remote sanctuary for enormous flocks of seabirds, the island gained a new name when shipwrecked rats colonized, savaging the nesting birds by the thousands. Now, on this and hundreds of other remote islands around the world, a massive-and massively controversial-wildlife rescue mission is under way. Islands, making up just 3 percent of Earth's landmass, harbor more than half of its endangered species. These fragile ecosystems, home to unique species that evolved in peaceful isolation, have been catastrophically disrupted by mainland predators-rats, cats, goats, and pigs ferried by humans to islands around the globe. To save these endangered islanders, academic ecologists have teamed up with professional hunters and semiretired poachers in a radical act of conservation now bent on annihilating the invaders. Sharpshooters are sniping at goat herds from helicopters. Biological SWAT teams are blanketing mountainous isles with rat poison. Rat Island reveals a little-known and much-debated side of today's conservation movement, founded on a cruel-to-be-kind philosophy. Touring exotic locales with a ragtag group of environmental fighters, William Stolzenburg delivers both perilous adventure and intimate portraits of human, beast, hero, and villain. And amid manifold threats to life on Earth, he reveals a new reason to hope.

By the Book by Belinda Mckay,Patrick Buckridge Pdf

By the Book is an indispensable history of the literature of Queensland from its establishment as a separate colony in the mid-nineteenth century through major economic, political and cultural transformations to the beginning of the twenty-first century. Queensland figures in the Australian imagination as a frontier, a place of wild landscapes and wilder politics, but also as Australia's playground, a soft tourist paradise of warm weather and golden beaches. Based partly on real historical divergences from the rest of Australia, these contradictory images have been questioned and scrutinised in Queensland literature for 150 years, and writers today maintain that complicated imaginative relationship with the idea of Queensland as both different and paradoxical. By the Book looks at Queensland literature in terms of its regional cultures, while also devoting chapters to Indigenous writing, writing for children and travel writing. In the process it rediscovers lost literary traditions and forgotten writers to stir the imagination. Re-evaluations of early writers like Rosa Praed and George Essex Evans set contemporary writers like David Malouf, Janette Turner Hospital and Venero Armanno in a new context.

The Light Through the Woods by Maharaj Kaul Pdf

In his second compilation of poetry, Kashmiri-American poet Maharaj Kaul explores the shimmering emptiness of modern life. From the author of Meditations On Time and Inclinations And Reality: The Search For The Absolute comes an exciting new book of poetry, The Light Through The Woods. In it the poet bemoans how modern man has sacrificed his inner freedom and natural joy in living by creating and believing in the present culture of materialism and technology. He believes that man is born with inner freedom, joy, grandeur, and grace but as he grows up the existing culture corrupts him to realize these powerful elements. He strongly urges man to spiritually reconnect with nature to regain his soul. The poems also celebrate the poets stunningly beautiful birthplace, Kashmir, India, and express his joy in reminiscing about his childhood there as well as his sadness as he contemplates the wastefulness of its political struggles and the tragic dispossession and diaspora of his people, Kashmiri Pandits. The poems also reflect on the drama of human condition and the search of the human values. A visionary collection of poems dreaming of man regaining his natural inner beauty.

A Child's Adventure by William David Pdf

William David writes in an economical style, conveying the extraordinary nature of the early childhood years. He captures childhood experiences, where the child has many first-time encounters and feels the joy of surprise in a world of daily adventure. The story unfolds around the life of a little boy caught up in the controlling influence of circumstances involving his parents and extended family, which culminates in the loss of all that he holds dear. A gradual and increasingly longer separation from his mother begins at three, until at five he suddenly is removed far away. In this story of undying hope, a little boy determines to endure his circumstances, and accepting his fate, learns the value of compassion, wisdom, and humility. He chooses to have faith in God, while accepting the ambiguity and ultimate mystery of life and existence. Sadness at times and loss may be inescapable in life, but the benefit at any age is priceless strength and endurance.
