Too Good to Be True by Erin Arvedlund Pdf

The untold story of the Madoff scandal, by one of the first journalists to question his investment practices Despite all the headlines about Bernard Madoff, he is still shrouded in mystery. How did he fool so many smart investors for so long? Who among his family and employees knew the truth? The person best qualified to answer these questions is Erin Arvedlund. In early 2001, she was suspicious of the amazing returns of Madoff's hedge fund. Her subsequent article in Barron's could have prevented a lot of misery, had the SEC followed up. Arvedlund presents a sweeping narrative of Madoff's career-from his youth in Queens, New York, to his early days working for his fatherin- law, and finally to infamy as the world's most notorious swindler. Readers will be fascinated by Arvedlund's portrayal of Madoff, his empire, and all those who never considered that he might be too good to be true.

“The authoritative source on one of history's most notorious Ponzi schemes.”—Fortune The definitive, in-depth account of the spectacular rise and fall of Bernie Madoff—and the greatest Ponzi scheme of all time―featuring new, exclusive, never-before-published details from Madoff himself No name is more synonymous with the evils of Wall Street than Bernie Madoff. Arrested for fraud in 2008—during the depths of the global financial crisis—the 70-year-old market maker, investment advisor, and former chairman of the NASDAQ had orchestrated the largest Ponzi scheme in world history, fleecing thousands of investors across the globe to the tune of $65 billion. In Madoff Talks, author Jim Campbell presents the most comprehensive, insider account of the Madoff saga to date. Based on exclusive interviews with all the players—the Madoff family and their associates, the Wall Street wheelers and dealers, the army of lawyers, analysts, and investigators, the victims of the scheme, and Bernie Madoff himself—the book reveals: what motivated a respected financier to commit such a massive fraud—and why he thought he could get away with it how Madoff managed to keep the scheme hidden in plain sight—despite numerous SEC investigations the shocking failures of Wall Street oversight—and how it could happen again the true scale of the investment losses―and the victims’ ongoing fight for justice what Ruth Madoff and the rest of the family knew—and how it shattered their lives Madoff Talks features the first, and likely only, interviews with Ruth Madoff and defense attorney Ira Sorkin, for which Bernie waived attorney-client privilege, as well as never-before-published details from the author’s personal communications with Bernie Madoff in prison. A vivid, powerful piece of investigative reporting, the book takes us behind the headlines to show the full human cost of Madoff’s crimes, and offers a cogent analysis of the reforms necessary to prevent it from happening again. Con Game by Lionel S. Lewis Pdf

Bernard Madoff's financial fraud was global, an enormous amount of money was involved, and thousands of people and hundreds of institutions were swindled. Madoff's con game was a Ponzi scheme—an investment that pays returns to early investors from money acquired from subsequent investors. This case study of the Madoff scheme looks at the effects of his crimes on the victims. Elements from a theoretical framework put forward by Erving Goffman provide a perspective for understanding the development and the aftermath of Madoff's con. For example, as Goffman would have put it, Madoff's marks were not cooled out. Many did not accept the fact that they were victims of a con game and publicly clamored for sympathy, restitution, and for public officials to share their perspective.Inside men, ropers, outside men, and victims are at the core of con games. Lionel S. Lewis emphasizes that it is important to understand a con game's characteristics so as to grasp how it operates. The Madoff fraud includes elements of a variety of con games. For a comprehensive study of this economic crime, the case study must be seen as part of the broader social system. Considerably more is known about the dynamics of con games than about Ponzi schemes, and this fact frames this book's approach. To better understand what Madoff did, who was central in keeping his scheme alive, whom he defrauded, and how they reacted, this work is as invaluable as it is illuminating.

Who is Bernie Madoff, and how did he pull off the biggest Ponzi scheme in history? These questions have fascinated people ever since the news broke about the respected New York financier who swindled his friends, relatives, and other investors out of $65 billion through a fraud that lasted for decades. Many have speculated about what might have happened or what must have happened, but no reporter has been able to get the full story -- until now. In The Wizard of Lies, Diana B. Henriques of The New York Times -- who has led the paper's coverage of the Madoff scandal since the day the story broke -- has written the definitive book on the man and his scheme, drawing on unprecedented access and more than one hundred interviews with people at all levels and on all sides of the crime, including Madoff's first interviews for publication since his arrest. Henriques also provides vivid details from the various lawsuits, government investigations, and court filings that will explode the myths that have come to surround the story. A true-life financial thriller, The Wizard of Lies contrasts Madoff's remarkable rise on Wall Street, where he became one of the country's most trusted and respected traders, with dramatic scenes from his accelerating slide toward self-destruction. It is also the most complete account of the heartbreaking personal disasters and landmark legal battles triggered by Madoff's downfall -- the suicides, business failures, fractured families, shuttered charities -- and the clear lessons this timeless scandal offers to Washington, Wall Street, and Main Street.

Crimes of the Century: Bernie Madoff by Andrew Ulloa Pdf

ABOUT THE BOOK In the fall of 2008, at the zenith of the American financial crisis, multiple Wall Street firms posted losses reaching into the hundreds of millions. These losses represented the beginning of an unprecedented disaster. In December of 2008, CNN estimated that Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC was responsible for $50 billion. Widely touted as the biggest Ponzi scheme in history, Bernard “Bernie” Madoff lured wealthy investors with promises of high returns only to siphon away funds to finance his own lavish lifestyle. He would then replenish his coffers by recruiting more unsuspecting clients. After decades of deception, the question remains: How did Madoff get away with it for so long? MEET THE AUTHOR Andrew Ulloa is an attorney who lives and practices in San Jose, California. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Madoff’s obsession with access extended beyond recruiting clients. The Wall Street Journal documented Madoff’s entrée into the world of regulatory agencies. Madoff kept close ties with the leading securities industry organization, Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (“SIFMA”), where his brother Peter served on the board of directors. Additionally, Madoff held close relationships with employees of the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”). His nephew was a SEC lawyer and Madoff considered past SEC Chairpersons and Commissioners to be friends. It seemed that he had friends everywhere. What is fascinating about Madoff is the ability he had to manipulate so many smart, wealthy, connected people. Even days before Madoff’s arrest, there were those still clamoring to invest with him. Madoff had crafted a sustainable self-perpetuating scheme. Yet, the one factor Madoff could not anticipate was the subprime mortgage crisis and the resulting housing market crash. The economy was shaken, and investors wanted to be as liquid as possible. In the fall of 2008, they began requesting cash withdrawals from Madoff. This was the end of the line. There was no way Madoff could redeem over $7 billion in requests. According to Bloomberg News, Madoff only had $200 million left to disperse. With his options limited, he confessed to his family and surrendered to authorities on December 11, 2008. Buy a copy to continue reading!

Truth and Consequences by Laurie Sandell Pdf

In December 2008, the world watched as master financier Bernard L. Madoff was taken away from his posh Manhattan apartment in handcuffs, accused of swindling thousands of innocent victims-including friends and family-out of billions of dollars in the world's largest Ponzi scheme. Madoff went to jail; he will spend the rest of his life there. But what happened to his devoted wife and sons? The people closest to him, the public reasoned, must have known the truth behind his astounding success. Had they been tricked, too? With unprecedented access to the surviving family members -- wife Ruth, son Andrew and his fiancéee Catherine Hooper -- journalist Laurie Sandell reveals the personal details behind the headlines. How did Andrew and Mark, the sons who'd spent their lives believing in and building their own families around their father's business first learn of the massive deception? How does a wife, who adored her husband since they were teenagers, begin to understand the ramifications of his actions? The Madoffs were a tight-knit and even claustrophobic clan, sticking together through marriages, divorces, and illnesses. But the pressures of enduring the massive scandal push them to their breaking points, most of all son Mark, whose suicide is one of the many tragedies that grew in the wake of the scandal. Muzzled by lawyers, vilified by the media and roundly condemned by the public, the Madoffs have chosen to keep their silence -- until now. Ultimately, theirs is one of the most riveting stories of our time: a modern-day Greek tragedy about money, power, lies, family, truth and consequences.
