Black Hills by Dan Simmons Pdf

When Paha Sapa, a young Sioux warrior, "counts coup" on General George Armstrong Custer as Custer lies dying on the battlefield at the Little Bighorn, the legendary general's ghost enters him - and his voice will speak to him for the rest of his event-filled life. Seamlessly weaving together the stories of Paha Sapa, Custer, and the American West, Dan Simmons depicts a tumultuous time in the history of both Native and white Americans. Haunted by Custer's ghost, and also by his ability to see into the memories and futures of legendary men like Sioux war-chief Crazy Horse, Paha Sapa's long life is driven by a dramatic vision he experienced as a boy in his people's sacred Black Hills. In August of 1936, a dynamite worker on the massive Mount Rushmore project, Paha Sapa plans to silence his ghost forever and reclaim his people's legacy-on the very day FDR comes to Mount Rushmore to dedicate the face.

The Lakotas and the Black Hills by Jeffrey Ostler Pdf

The story of the Lakota Sioux's loss of their spiritual homelands and their remarkable legal battle to regain it The Lakota Indians counted among their number some of the most famous Native Americans, including Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. Their homeland was in the magnificent Black Hills in South Dakota, where they found plentiful game and held religious ceremonies at charged locations like Devil's Tower. Bullied by settlers and the U. S. Army, they refused to relinquish the land without a fight, most famously bringing down Custer at Little Bighorn. In 1873, though, on the brink of starvation, the Lakotas surrendered the Hills. But the story does not end there. Over the next hundred years, the Lakotas waged a remarkable campaign to recover the Black Hills, this time using the weapons of the law. In The Lakotas and the Black Hills, the latest addition to the Penguin Library of American Indian History, Jeffrey Ostler moves with ease from battlefields to reservations to the Supreme Court, capturing the enduring spiritual strength that bore the Lakotas through the worst times and kept alive the dream of reclaiming their cherished homeland.

Deadwood by David Milch Pdf

After just two seasons, the HBO drama Deadwood has become one of cable's highest rated series, a symbol of how great television can be when pushed to its limits. From the masterful acting to the surprisingly credible re-creation of a Western gold-rush town to the provocative dialogue, Deadwood is television made at the highest level of craft. Now, through the eyes of series creator David Milch, the Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning drama comes to life like never before. Imaginatively rendered and lavishly illustrated, Deadwood- Stories of the Black Hills is an unprecedented look at the people, places, and history of Deadwood, as seen and imagined by the show's creator, chief writer, and executive producer David Milch. Through in-depth discussions of the themes and motivations that run throughout Deadwood - from violence to gold to profane language - Milch sheds light on the characters and events of Deadwood. Fresh interviews with the Deadwood cast, never before seen photographs of the show, and dozens of historical photographs and objects vividly bring the most dangerous settlement in the West to life. Much more than a companion to the series, this book is an integral part of the show's storied mythology, as it examines, in great detail, the fascinating intersection of historical fact and inventive fiction - from Custer's opening of the Black Hills (and defeat by the Sioux), to the compelling story of the frontier Chinese, who endured years of racism in order to survive in the West. Entertaining and illuminating, Deadwood

Pioneer Days in the Black Hills by John S. McClintock Pdf

Pioneer Days in the Black Hills is a rough-and-tumble account of the early days of Deadwood, Dakota Territory. In 1874, after leading an expedition into the Black Hills, George Armstrong Custer announced that he had found gold "among the roots of the grass." Almost overnight a number of settlements sprang into existence. Among them was Deadwood. In April 1876, John S. McClintock arrived in search of gold. Entering a series of speculations and employments that won him moderate prosperity, he made Deadwood his home. During his later years, he wrote his memoirs, presented here for the first time in half a century.

The Black Hills Passion Play by Johanna Meier Pdf

In 1932, Josef Meier, a native of Luenen, Germany, brought a small company of actors to the United States to tour with a passion play. It was performed in German, destined for a limited engagement in German theaters, churches, and German-speaking communities. Political and economic conditions in Germany were already deteriorating during this time, and Meier determined to remain in America, to found a permanent home for the play. He translated the play into English, hiring American actors to replace the German-speaking cast. As he booked tours across the United States, Meier continued to seek a suitable permanent outdoor location for his production, mentioning his quest to the public in interviews across the nation. En route to the West Coast, Meier presented the Passion Play in Sioux Falls, the only town of size within South Dakota at that time. A group of businessmen from the Black Hills attended and asked Meier to examine possible sites in their area. He chose a spectacular natural location in Spearfish, and in 1939, an amphitheater was constructed and became the home of the renamed Black Hills Passion Play of America.

When Hunter rescued a wounded coyote pup—and named him Bobby Lee—he had no idea the cute little varmint would grow up to be such a loyal companion. Coyotes aren’t known to be man’s best friend. Most of them are as fierce and wild as the Black Hills they roam. But Bobby Lee is different. When Hunter is ambushed on the road, Bobby Lee leaps to his defense. And when the attacker tries to shoot Bobby Lee, Hunter returns the favor by hitting the man with a rock. By the time the smoke clears, the coyote-loving ex-Confederate is covered in blood—and the other guy’s got a knife in his chest. Now Hunter has to explain it all to the local sheriff. Which is going to be tough. Because the man he just killed is the sheriff’s deputy . . .
